Best Home 3D Printers to Consider Instead of the Bambu Lab R1? First, a Category Correction

Bambu Lab’s R1 is a CO₂ laser cutter and engraver, not a 3D printer. Here are home FDM models to compare if you meant to shop for 3D printing.

Bambu Lab’s R1 is not a 3D printer: announced on September 22, 2026, it is a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver. That means FDM printers are not alternatives to it. If you are shopping for a home 3D printer, the models below are options in that separate category—not direct R1 competitors.

What the Bambu Lab R1 does—and why the title needs a correction

Bambu Lab announced the R1 as a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver, describing it as the company’s first product line beyond 3D printing and its first device that is not a 3D printer. Its stated uses include cutting and engraving wood, transparent acrylic, leather, paper and fabric, and engraving glass, stone and coated metals. Bambu Lab also claims speeds of up to 1000 mm/s. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Bambu Lab’s September 22, 2026 announcement

A laser cutter processes materials with a laser; an FDM printer builds a part by depositing filament. They solve different problems, so a printer cannot be treated as a like-for-like R1 substitute. If you meant alternatives to Bambu Lab’s 3D printers generally, the following home FDM options are worth comparing. If you meant alternatives to the R1 laser, this shortlist does not answer that question.

Original Prusa CORE One+: enclosed printing and offline operation

Prusa describes the CORE One+ as an enclosed CoreXY printer with a Nextruder direct-drive extruder and a 55 °C chamber. Prusa says it can be configured and used offline, including slicing and firmware updates. The offline option may matter if local operation is important to you; assess the setup and software workflow against your own needs. Prusa’s CORE One+ product information

TechRadar’s 2026 guide covers the Original Prusa Core One, using that model name, and lists a 250 × 220 × 270 mm build area. The guide praises print quality and integration with PrusaSlicer and Prusa Connect, while noting price, noise and the lack of standard AI camera monitoring as trade-offs. Those are the publication’s review observations, not independent tests conducted for this article. TechRadar’s 2026 3D printer guide

Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo: integrated four-filament color

TechRadar lists a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build area and an integrated four-filament color system. The guide identifies external filament storage and purge waste as drawbacks. Its reviewer reports favorable print quality in their own tests; that finding should not be read as a test result for this article. TechRadar’s 2026 3D printer guide

Creality K1C: speed with a stated quality trade-off

Creality describes the K1C as a CoreXY printer and reports a typical printing speed of 300 mm/s, explicitly labeling that figure as Creality Lab data. TechRadar’s current guide describes it as fast, notes its AI camera, and says print quality can be affected by speed. These figures and observations come from different sources and should not be treated as a directly comparable test. Creality’s K1C product page TechRadar’s 2026 3D printer guide

Prusa CORE One L: consider it when size takes priority

TechRadar describes the CORE One L as a larger, enclosed, single-filament printer. Its guide flags a higher entry price and no standard multifilament printing. It is most relevant if you need a larger build area and can accept those trade-offs; the available information here does not provide a build-area figure for a direct size comparison. TechRadar’s 2026 3D printer guide

How to choose a home 3D printer for your projects

  • Enclosure and materials: Decide whether your planned materials and workspace call for an enclosed printer or a controlled chamber. The CORE One+ is described by Prusa as enclosed and having a 55 °C chamber; do not assume those characteristics apply to every model.
  • Build area: Compare a printer’s usable build volume with the largest part you expect to make. The TechRadar guide lists 250 × 220 × 270 mm for the Original Prusa Core One and 256 × 256 × 256 mm for the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo. The figures are useful for orientation, but they do not establish print quality or suitability for every shape.
  • Filament count and color: An integrated multi-filament setup can support color printing, but the Centauri guide notes external storage and purge waste. If you mostly print single-color parts, weigh whether that added capability is useful to you.
  • Speed versus finish: Creality’s 300 mm/s typical speed is identified as lab data from the manufacturer; TechRadar separately warns that speed can affect K1C print quality. Treat speed claims as one consideration, not a guarantee of a particular finished result.
  • Local operation and software: If you want offline configuration, slicing or firmware updates, Prusa says the CORE One+ supports offline use. Check each printer’s actual software and connectivity workflow before choosing.
  • Total ownership fit: Compare purchase price, maintenance needs and software ecosystem for the exact current model and region. The cited guide notes price trade-offs for the Prusa models, but the information here does not establish a current, normalized price comparison across these printers.
