If Bose QuietComfort is not quite right for you, start with the Sony WH-1000XM6 for a premium all-rounder and strong noise cancellation. Choose the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless if sound quality is your priority, the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless if long battery life and value matter most, or Apple AirPods Max 2 if you already use Apple devices. There is no single best alternative: fit, sound preference, features and the price you find all affect the choice.

These are over-ear noise-canceling headphones for different priorities, not interchangeable winners in a universal ranking. Reviews assess different models and criteria, so use their judgments as guidance rather than as results from one standardized head-to-head test.

Choose Sony WH-1000XM6 for a premium all-rounder
The WH-1000XM6 is the most straightforward alternative if you want a high-end pair that balances noise cancellation with everyday listening. Tom’s Guide praised the cancellation on Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), while TechRadar’s Sony-versus-Apple comparison favored Sony for ANC. Those are each publication’s judgments, not measurements from a shared test protocol. See Tom’s Guide’s Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) review and TechRadar’s Sony-versus-AirPods comparison.
If you mainly want silence, compare Sony’s fit and controls with the Bose model you are replacing; a strong review score cannot tell you which earcups will feel better on your head. If you listen in mixed environments, also weigh how you like the sound and whether the headphones’ features work with your devices.

Choose Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless for a sound-focused premium option
What Hi-Fi? positions the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as a close rival to standard Bose QuietComfort (2nd Gen). Its review says the ANC is below the Sony and Bose flagship models, but handles traffic, wind, air-conditioning hum and voices well. That makes it a plausible choice when listening character matters more to you than pursuing the strongest cancellation available in these reviews. Read What Hi-Fi?’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless review.
What Hi-Fi? also reports Sennheiser’s claim that the MOMENTUM 5 provides “three times” better midrange noise cancellation than its predecessor. This is the manufacturer’s claim as relayed by the publication, not an independent statistical measurement.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Choose Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless for battery life and value
The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is worth considering if you want a long-lasting pair without necessarily stepping up to a newer premium model. SoundGuys measured 56 hours and 21 minutes of playback in its 2025 test; your results can vary with volume, settings and use. SoundGuys also highlights its sound quality, wired listening and support for multiple codecs. See SoundGuys’ MOMENTUM 4 Wireless review.

Choose AirPods Max 2 if you are already invested in Apple
AirPods Max 2 has the clearest case for someone who already uses Apple devices and values the convenience of staying in that ecosystem. TechRadar highlights ease-of-use features for Apple owners, and What Hi-Fi? includes the model among premium competitors. See What Hi-Fi?’s AirPods Max 2 review.
Keep generation comparisons in perspective: RTINGS’ cited comparison concerns the prior AirPods Max, not Max 2. Its findings about that earlier model’s Spatial Audio, noise blocking and comfort versus the MOMENTUM 4 should not be transferred to the newer generation. See RTINGS’ comparison of the prior AirPods Max and MOMENTUM 4.

Consider Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) as a step up, not a different-brand alternative
If you like Bose QuietComfort but want to move to the brand’s premium tier, the QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are an adjacent option rather than an alternative from another maker. Tom’s Guide rated their ANC highly in its guide. That is useful context if cancellation is your main reason for shopping, but it is not proof that every listener will prefer them to Sony or another model. Read Tom’s Guide’s QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) review.

How to make the final choice
- Prioritize noise cancellation: Start with Sony WH-1000XM6, then compare its fit and sound with Bose. Review rankings are publication-specific, not standardized measurements across all models.
- Prioritize sound: Consider MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, bearing in mind that its ANC is rated below Sony and Bose flagships in the cited What Hi-Fi? review.
- Prioritize long battery life: Look at MOMENTUM 4 Wireless and treat the SoundGuys result as a test measurement, not a promise of your runtime.
- Use Apple devices already: AirPods Max 2 may be the better practical fit for ecosystem convenience; check reviews for the exact generation.
- Compare comfort and fit: If possible, try the headphones on. Comfort is personal, and another model’s fit may matter more than a small difference in a reviewer’s ranking.
- Check current pricing: Compare today’s prices and availability before buying; the cited material does not establish live retail prices or stock.
