To build one, place a .breadcrumb list inside a labeled <nav>, link the ancestor pages, and mark the final item as the current page with aria-current="page".
Build a basic Bootstrap breadcrumb
This example follows the markup documented for Bootstrap 5.3. Replace the sample paths and labels with real destinations and page names.

</nav>The .breadcrumb class styles the list and adds dividers through CSS. Each ancestor is a linked .breadcrumb-item; the final item names the page the visitor is already viewing. Bootstrap’s component documentation describes the purpose as indicating the current page’s location in a navigational hierarchy, with separators added automatically via CSS. Choose an ordered or unordered list
Bootstrap documents both <ol> and <ul> for the trail. Use an ordered list when the sequence expresses the hierarchy or progression of locations. An unordered list is also supported when you do not want to convey list order semantically. In either case, keep the ancestor links before the current-page item.

Change or remove the separator
The default divider is a slash. For a simple text alternative, set the CSS custom property on the breadcrumb navigation:
<nav style="--bs-breadcrumb-divider: '>'" aria-label="breadcrumb">This changes the visual separator without changing the list structure or its accessibility semantics. Bootstrap also documents using an inline SVG divider; because the SVG is placed in a CSS value, reserved characters must be escaped or URL-encoded correctly.

To remove the divider, set --bs-breadcrumb-divider to an empty string, or set the Sass variable $breadcrumb-divider to none. The CSS custom property is convenient for a local override without recompiling Bootstrap’s CSS. Sass is appropriate when the divider is part of a build-time theme configuration.

- Wrap the trail in a
<nav>landmark and give it a meaningful label such asaria-label="breadcrumb". If a page has multiple navigation landmarks, a clear label helps distinguish them. - Set
aria-current="page"on the final item. The current page should not be presented as an ancestor link. - Use descriptive link text and working destinations for the preceding hierarchy levels.
- Check the actual colors and styling in the finished site. Bootstrap cautions that some default color combinations may not meet recommended contrast thresholds. Using a framework component does not by itself guarantee an accessible result; the authored markup, styles, and any scripting still matter.

Bootstrap version context
The Bootstrap 5.3 documentation footer identifies the documented release as v5.3.8. Bootstrap added breadcrumb CSS custom properties in v5.2.0, so the local divider override shown above requires a version that includes those variables.
