Bootstrap Accordion: How to Build and Check a Simple Widget in 2026

Bootstrap’s v5.3 accordion uses the Collapse plugin. Learn how panel behavior depends on data-bs-parent and what to verify before adopting a widget called V19.

A Bootstrap accordion is a set of collapsible panels powered by Bootstrap’s Collapse JavaScript plugin. Bootstrap’s v5.3 documentation shows how to connect each button to its panel, and whether panels open independently or one at a time depends on whether the group uses data-bs-parent. The specific download or product called “Bootstrap Accordion V19” could not be verified, so this guide covers Bootstrap’s documented accordion pattern—not a confirmed V19 widget, download, or license.

How a Bootstrap accordion works

Each accordion item pairs a control with a panel. In Bootstrap v5.3, the control is a button with data-bs-toggle="collapse" and a target selector pointing to the panel. The panel uses Bootstrap’s collapse classes; adding show makes it initially open. Bootstrap’s Collapse plugin handles the toggling and transition.

The button’s aria-expanded value and the panel’s visibility-related classes should reflect the current state. aria-controls connects the button to the panel by ID. Keep those relationships intact when adapting the example or generating items dynamically.

Choose whether panels open independently or exclusively

For independent panels, omit data-bs-parent. More than one panel can then remain open. To make the group exclusive—opening one panel closes another—set data-bs-parent on each panel to the selector for the shared accordion container.

Example: one panel open at a time

This Bootstrap v5.3-style example starts with the first panel open. The parent selector on both panels makes the items act as one accordion group.

<div class="accordion" id="helpAccordion">
  <div class="accordion-item">
    <h2 class="accordion-header" id="helpHeadingOne">
      <button class="accordion-button" type="button"
        data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#helpPanelOne"
        aria-expanded="true" aria-controls="helpPanelOne">
        First question
      </button>
    </h2>
    <div id="helpPanelOne" class="accordion-collapse collapse show"
      aria-labelledby="helpHeadingOne" data-bs-parent="#helpAccordion">
      <div class="accordion-body">First answer.</div>
    </div>
  </div>
  <div class="accordion-item">
    <h2 class="accordion-header" id="helpHeadingTwo">
      <button class="accordion-button collapsed" type="button"
        data-bs-toggle="collapse" data-bs-target="#helpPanelTwo"
        aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="helpPanelTwo">
        Second question
      </button>
    </h2>
    <div id="helpPanelTwo" class="accordion-collapse collapse"
      aria-labelledby="helpHeadingTwo" data-bs-parent="#helpAccordion">
      <div class="accordion-body">Second answer.</div>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>

For independent panels, remove data-bs-parent="#helpAccordion" from both panel elements. Use unique IDs for every button, panel, and heading relationship; if you duplicate an item, update all references that point to its IDs.

Check accessibility and interaction before using a widget

Bootstrap’s classes and data attributes do not by themselves establish that a third-party widget implements every expected interaction. The WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide’s accordion example is a useful reference for checking button controls, aria-expanded, aria-controls, and the relationship between each control and its panel.

  • Confirm each heading contains a real button, rather than a non-semantic clickable element.
  • Check that every aria-controls value identifies the corresponding panel and that each panel is associated with its controlling button.
  • Use a keyboard to test that controls can receive focus and be activated, and observe where focus goes when panels open and close. Compare the actual behavior with the applicable accessibility pattern; do not assume conformance from a widget’s label or appearance.
  • Verify that the expanded state changes with the panel state and that initially open panels are marked consistently in both the control and panel markup.

Accessibility guidance depends on the Bootstrap release and the implementation. Bootstrap v4.0 documented a limitation in that release’s optional keyboard interactions; that historical note should not be applied automatically to a v5.3 widget. Check the exact release and test the rendered component.

Check reduced-motion behavior and Bootstrap compatibility

Bootstrap documents that accordion animation depends on the prefers-reduced-motion media query. If reduced motion matters to your project, verify the result in the browser with that preference enabled rather than assuming a separately supplied widget handles it the same way.

Before integrating a downloaded widget, establish which Bootstrap major version it targets and compare its classes, data attributes, and behavior with that version’s documentation. The example above follows the v5.3 pattern; do not assume it can be copied unchanged into a project using another major release.

What “Bootstrap Accordion V19” establishes—and what it does not

The name alone does not establish that a specific V19 download exists, what its license permits, or which Bootstrap release it supports. Treat a page or file using that name as a separate product to verify: look for its own authoritative source, version declaration, license terms, and working demo, then inspect its markup and interactions against the checks above. Bootstrap’s documented accordion pattern is a reference for implementation, not proof about an unverified third-party widget.
