“Boot Device Not Found” means your laptop’s BIOS or UEFI firmware could not locate a device it can start from. It does not prove the drive has failed: the storage drive may be undetected, the boot order may be wrong, or Windows may have a startup problem. Check for external devices first, then verify drive detection and run the laptop maker’s pre-boot diagnostic before attempting Windows repair.
What the error means
Dell Support defines “Boot Device Not Found” as an error indicating that the computer “cannot locate a bootable device.” Its related “No Boot Device Found” message means the computer cannot find a device to boot from, which may point to a problem with the drive or its connection. These messages identify a boot failure, not its cause. Dell’s troubleshooting separates checking drive detection and boot order from repairing Windows startup.

Although HP uses the related wording “3F0 Boot Device Not Found,” the diagnostic steps and menu labels vary by manufacturer and laptop model. The Dell and HP procedures below are examples for those brands; for another laptop, use its manufacturer’s support instructions and service manual.
Start with checks that do not change the drive
- Disconnect external devices. Remove USB storage, memory cards, external drives, and other peripherals that could affect startup.
- Fully power off the laptop. Turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on with only essential accessories connected.
- Note the exact message. Record any error code, such as HP’s 3F0, because it can help identify the manufacturer-specific support procedure.
If the message remains, check whether the firmware can see the internal storage drive.

- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
Check drive detection and boot order in BIOS or UEFI
Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI setup or the one-time boot menu using the key specified in the laptop’s manual or manufacturer support page. The key, menu names, and available options differ by model; Dell’s instructions apply to Dell systems and should not be assumed to match another brand.
If the internal drive does not appear
Firmware cannot boot from a drive it does not detect. Continue to the manufacturer’s pre-boot diagnostic. If the drive remains absent or diagnostics report a hardware problem, treat this as a possible drive or connection issue—not a routine Windows startup-file repair.

If the internal drive does appear
Review the boot sequence and select the intended Windows Boot Manager or internal drive, if listed. Do not casually switch UEFI or Legacy boot modes or change storage settings such as AHCI: the appropriate configuration depends on the laptop and how its operating system was installed. If you are unsure what a setting does, leave it unchanged and consult the model-specific documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun the manufacturer’s pre-boot storage diagnostic
Run the laptop maker’s diagnostic before attempting operating-system repair. These tests run outside the normal Windows startup process and can help distinguish a drive problem from a Windows boot problem.

Follow the prompts for your exact model. Write down any diagnostic error and validation codes; use the manufacturer’s support page to interpret them and check warranty or service options. Do not assume another brand uses the same test or entry steps.
If the drive is missing or the diagnostic reports failure
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional about service. Opening the laptop, reseating a drive, or replacing it may require model-specific instructions and can affect warranty coverage. If the files matter, avoid resetting, reinstalling, repartitioning, or otherwise erasing the drive before considering data recovery. A failed diagnostic or undetected drive should be addressed as a hardware or connection issue before trying software boot repairs.

If the drive is detected and passes
Windows Recovery Environment Startup Repair is a reasonable next step. A passing test does not guarantee that every component or file is problem-free, but it provides a basis for moving on to Windows startup repair rather than immediately replacing the drive.
Recommended Free Tools
Try Windows Startup Repair if the drive passes
- Open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Use the recovery entry method for your device. How to reach WinRE can vary; follow your laptop manufacturer’s instructions if Windows does not offer recovery automatically.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Follow the on-screen prompts and let the repair complete.
- Enter the BitLocker recovery key if requested. Windows may ask for it on an encrypted device. Find the key before continuing; without it, you may not be able to access the encrypted installation.
Dell also documents SupportAssist OS Recovery for supported Dell models. It is a Dell-specific option, not a feature available on every Windows laptop; check the instructions for your exact model before using it.

When service or a replacement drive makes sense
Do not buy an internal SSD just because the boot error appeared. Consider replacement only after diagnostics or a technician confirms drive failure, and verify that the exact laptop model supports a replaceable drive. The service manual should identify the compatible form factor, interface, capacity support, and any serviceability limits. There is no single replacement SSD that fits all laptops.
Manufacturer service, a repair professional, or a data-recovery provider may be appropriate if the drive is not detected, diagnostics fail, important files need to be preserved, the device is under warranty, or you are not comfortable opening it. Decide based on whether the firmware detects the drive, whether its diagnostic passes, whether data recovery is needed, and the model’s warranty and repair options. Compare total repair costs only after confirming the fault and compatible parts; the official support guidance cited here does not establish prices or a universal replacement model.
