To get karma on Reddit, contribute useful, original posts and comments in communities you genuinely care about. Karma roughly reflects how other users vote on your posts and comments, but it does not convert from votes at a fixed rate—and no particular score guarantees access to every community.
Reddit’s advice is to “Don’t set out to accumulate karma; just set out to be a good contributor, and let your karma simply be a reflection of your legacy.” Reddit Help’s explanation of karma captures the key idea: focus on the contribution, not a promised score.

What karma can—and cannot—tell you
Reddit karma is a rough reflection of upvotes and downvotes on your posts and comments. It is not a one-for-one count of votes, and Reddit does not publish a formula that lets you predict how much karma a particular contribution will earn. There is no reliable timeline or tactic that guarantees a score increase.
Some communities limit posting based on factors such as post karma, comment karma, combined karma, community-specific karma, account age, or email verification. Requirements vary by community, and exact thresholds are not disclosed. If a post is blocked, Reddit’s Poster Eligibility Guide & Post Check can show which criteria you meet and which you do not.
8 ways to build karma without gaming Reddit
1. Choose communities you actually care about
Participate where you have a genuine interest and can contribute something relevant. Reddit recommends joining communities of interest and sharing posts or comments other members find worthwhile. Chasing whichever community seems easiest can lead to contributions that do not fit its audience.
2. Read the rules before contributing
Community rules can specify allowed topics, post formats, flair, links, and other requirements. Review the rules and any posting guidance before submitting. Reddit explains that its sitewide rules apply across the platform, while individual communities may set additional expectations: see What are Reddit’s rules? and How do I post and comment on Reddit?
3. Start by commenting thoughtfully
A comment lets you join an existing discussion without needing to create a standalone post. Reddit says earning even a small amount of karma by commenting in a community can help users get past some filters. That may help, but it is not a universal bypass: a community can have different eligibility checks or other rules.
4. Make comments useful to the conversation
Answer the question being asked, add relevant context, or share a clear personal perspective when it helps. A comment that responds directly to the discussion gives readers a reason to engage with it. Votes—and any resulting karma—remain up to other users.
5. Post original, on-topic contributions
When you have something to share, make sure it fits the community’s subject and required format. Reddit advises users to post authentic content in communities they are personally interested in. Originality and relevance are better foundations than reposting something just because it once attracted attention.
6. Be patient with posting limits
Reddit limits how often people can post or comment in a community to help prevent spam. New accounts, or users who are new to a sensitive community, may see a “You’re doing that too much” restriction. Space out contributions rather than trying to work around the limit. Reddit explains the message and its possible causes in Why am I being told, “You’re doing that too much…”?
7. Avoid repetitive, recycled, or self-promotional posting
Repeatedly posting similar comments, sharing unrelated or link-farmed content, or reposting old material to gain karma quickly can be treated as spam. Some communities also restrict self-promotion. The often-mentioned “10% rule” is a practice used by some communities, not a platform-wide Reddit rule; check local policies and follow moderator guidance. Reddit’s Spam guidance describes content and behavior that may be considered spam.
8. Never manipulate votes or automate karma
Do not arrange vote exchanges, use extra accounts to boost votes, deploy bots, or otherwise manufacture engagement. Reddit prohibits vote cheating and automated attempts to manipulate karma. These tactics can lead to content removal or account enforcement; see Reddit’s guidance on Disrupting Communities.
Rank #3
Should you comment or make a post?
Choose the format that best fits what you can contribute and the community’s eligibility rules. Neither format produces a predictable amount of karma.
| Choose | When it fits | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Comment | You can add something relevant to an existing discussion. | Whether the community allows you to comment, and whether your reply follows its rules. |
| Post | You have an original contribution that fits the community’s topic and format. | Posting eligibility, flair or formatting requirements, and local rules. |
If Reddit blocks a post, use the eligibility check to identify the unmet criterion instead of guessing at a universal karma target. If the issue is a community rule or limit, follow its instructions and wait where required.
What not to expect from karma-building tactics
- No tactic promises a specific amount of karma or a deadline for earning it.
- There is no single karma threshold that unlocks posting across Reddit.
- Reddit Premium does not bypass the spam filter or provide a quick fix for earning karma.
