Use McAfee alongside your phone’s built-in protections, not instead of them. McAfee currently offers a mobile security app for Android and iOS, but its US product page lists antivirus for Android only. The tools available on iPhone, and the features included in any subscription, differ by platform, plan, device, and location. These seven steps help you choose the right tools and make the most of the protections already on your phone.
1. Install the official app and check what your plan includes
McAfee directs Android users to Google Play and iPhone users to the Apple App Store. Use the store listing reached from McAfee’s US mobile product page, rather than an app link in an unexpected message. Confirm the app’s publisher and review its current feature description before installing.

After installation, check the subscription details in the app or your account. Do not assume that a feature shown on a product page is included in every plan, or available in every country and on every device. McAfee’s US feature information is a useful starting point, but the current app listing and your subscription screen are the practical checks for your own setup.

2. Turn on features that fit your risks
McAfee describes mobile tools including Scam Detector, Safe Browsing, Identity Monitoring, VPN, and cleanup tools. Its US product information lists antivirus for Android only; iOS features include other tools, such as safe browsing, identity monitoring, VPN, and system scanning. Names and availability can vary with the app version, platform, location, and subscription.

Scam detection and safe browsing
These tools are intended to flag certain suspicious messages, links, or web activity. They can add a warning before you engage, but no detection feature should be treated as a guarantee that a message or site is safe.
Identity monitoring
Identity monitoring can alert you to certain exposure of personal information, depending on the service and plan. It does not prevent every data breach or replace strong, unique passwords and account recovery safeguards.
VPN and cleanup tools
A VPN can route network traffic through an encrypted connection, but it does not make every online activity anonymous or protect you from every scam. Cleanup tools may help identify items that can be removed; check what they propose before deleting anything important.

Antivirus and the iPhone distinction
McAfee lists antivirus for Android, not iOS. An iPhone app may provide other security features, but that is not the same as scanning iPhone apps for malware in the way an Android antivirus feature can. Check McAfee’s current platform feature list and your app’s feature screen rather than assuming the same tools work on both systems.
3. Keep your phone’s operating system and apps updated
Security updates address weaknesses in the operating system and apps. Make checking for updates a routine habit, and install updates from the phone’s built-in settings or the official app store rather than through unsolicited links.
On Android
On Android 13 and later, Google’s combined Security and privacy overview can show system update status alongside other security information. The exact route and labels vary by manufacturer; search Settings for “System update” if the item is not obvious. On Android 12 and earlier, security and privacy options may be in separate menus. On iPhone
Use Settings to check for available iOS updates, and keep apps current through the App Store. The wording and location of settings can change between iOS versions, so follow the update controls on your device.

4. Review app permissions and remove access you no longer need
Permissions determine whether an app can access sensitive information or device features. Review them when installing a new app and periodically afterward; an app’s old access may no longer make sense.
On iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security to review categories such as Location Services, Contacts, Photos, Bluetooth, Microphone, and Camera. Choose a category to see which apps have access and change permissions. Apple’s guide to controlling access to information in apps describes the available controls.

On iOS 16 or later, Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check can help you review sharing, connected devices, and app privacy permissions. Some options may be unavailable if the iPhone is managed by an organization. See Apple’s Safety Check guide for details.
On Android
Open Settings and look under Security and privacy for privacy permissions or permission controls. On Android 13 and later, Google describes these within the combined security and privacy overview; menu names and placement vary by phone maker and Android version. If you cannot find the control, search Settings for “permissions.” Google’s overview explains the available security and privacy information.
5. Keep Google Play Protect enabled on Android
McAfee is not a substitute for Android’s built-in app checks. Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and can scan apps from other sources. Google says it may warn about, deactivate, or remove apps it identifies as potentially harmful. Keep it enabled even if you use McAfee; the two protections serve as complementary layers.

To review it, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then choose Play Protect. Check the status and settings shown on your phone. For how the feature works, see Google’s Play Protect help page.
6. Check an app’s privacy disclosures before installing
On Google Play, open an app’s listing and review its Data safety section before downloading. Google says these disclosures are provided by the developer and are distinct from the app’s technical permissions list, so the two may not match exactly. Treat the section as useful context—not as proof that an app is safe or that its data practices are risk-free.
Compare the disclosure with the permissions requested by the app and ask whether the access makes sense for what it does. Google explains the distinction in its Play Data safety information.

McAfee markets detection for certain text, email, and video scams, and Google describes Android Advanced Protection features that can include scam detection and unsafe-link warnings on supported devices, apps, and in some regions. Availability depends on the device and configuration, and a warning feature cannot identify every threat.
If a message demands an immediate payment, password, verification code, or account change, do not use its link or reply with sensitive details. Contact the person or organization through a number, app, or website you already know to be genuine.
