Generative AI is being used in game-industry workplaces, but the available figures do not establish how many game-art jobs, if any, it has eliminated. The warning signs are real: some workers report using AI to generate assets, visual and technical artists are especially negative about its impact, and workers and students face a difficult employment climate. Those signals point to concern—not a proven count of AI-driven job losses or a reliable forecast for artists.
How is AI affecting jobs in game art?
The latest detailed figures come from the Game Developers Conference’s (GDC) 2026 State of the Game Industry survey, which included more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. Its results show that generative AI is present at work, but use is not synonymous with replacing an artist: the survey reports whether people use tools and what they use them for, not whether a role, contract or paid task was eliminated.

Among respondents overall, 36% said they used generative AI at work in 2026. Use varied by respondent group:

These are survey responses from different kinds of industry professionals, not a measure of how many artists use AI or how many jobs it has affected.

Asset creation is one reported use, not the dominant one
Among the professionals who said they used generative AI, 19% reported asset generation. The denominator is AI adopters—not all game-industry professionals, all developers or all artists. Respondents could select multiple uses: 81% of adopters reported research or brainstorming, while 47% reported daily tasks and 47% code assistance. These figures describe reported activities, not how often tools were used, whether their output shipped in a game or whether a human task was removed.
That distinction matters for game art. A tool used to brainstorm or assist with routine work raises different employment questions from one used to generate production assets. The survey groups several functions, but it does not trace their effects on staffing, pay, workloads or hiring.

Why are visual and technical artists worried?
In GDC’s 2026 survey, 64% of respondents in the visual and technical arts category viewed AI’s impact on the industry unfavorably; the overall negative-response share was 52%. The category is broader than a single job title, so 64% should not be read as a separate estimate for every kind of game artist.

Each figure comes from that year’s survey; the annual reports are snapshots, not a panel tracking the same people over time. The figures show a shift in reported sentiment across editions, not why opinions changed or what will happen to employment.
Some workers have also described limits on using these tools at their studios. The 2026 report quotes a senior employee in visual and technical arts in Germany: “We are not allowed to [use AI tools]. I’m not privy to the reasons behind that decision. However, I’m with my employer on this.” This is one anonymous respondent’s account, not evidence of a general studio policy.

Ethical concerns are not new: GDC’s 2024 report page says four in five developers had ethical concerns about generative AI. GDC’s 2026 report also discusses concerns including data sourcing, energy consumption and possible job replacement. The survey records workers’ views; it does not resolve those questions for every tool or studio.

GDC’s 2026 release reports that 28% of respondents had been laid off in the previous two years, and 50% said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the previous year. These are industry-wide figures, not counts for game artists and not estimates of AI-caused layoffs. They show that job insecurity is part of the current context, but they do not identify AI as the cause.

The 2025 GDC report page highlighted that one-third of respondents used generative AI and one in ten had been laid off in the prior year. These figures come from a different annual survey and cannot establish that AI use led to layoffs. Neither report provides an occupation-specific causal estimate for game-art employment.
What does this mean for people entering game art?
In a smaller student survey included in GDC’s 2026 report, 74% of surveyed students said they were concerned about future game-industry job prospects. The report summarizes worries about limited entry-level openings, competition from experienced workers who have been laid off, and displacement by AI. This is a snapshot of student concern across the industry, not a forecast for game-art graduates or a measure of available artist positions.
For someone choosing a course or preparing a portfolio, the figures are a reason to follow actual hiring and entry-level opportunities rather than treating either AI adoption or student anxiety as proof that a career is impossible. The survey does not identify which art skills employers will prioritize or how individual studios will change their workflows.

The GDC data establish reported workplace use and attitudes, but they leave central employment questions unanswered. They do not show how many game-art roles have disappeared because of AI, whether AI changes headcount or merely redistributes tasks, or how its effects differ by art specialty, seniority, studio size or region.
- Job displacement: There is no occupation-specific causal count in these reports separating AI-related job losses from other reasons for layoffs.
- Hiring and entry-level work: The student results describe concern, not a time series of game-art vacancies, offers or placements.
- Workflow change: Reported asset generation does not reveal whether generated material replaced paid artist work, became a starting point for human work, or was not used in a shipped product.
- Future impact: Annual survey snapshots cannot reliably predict long-term employment or determine which art tasks will change.
Those gaps do not make artists’ concerns unfounded; they define what the current figures can support. A clearer assessment would require sustained, role-specific employment and hiring data that can distinguish AI’s contribution from the other forces affecting studios.
