BolsaBuddy: A Free, Locally Run Tracker for Mexico’s IPC

BolsaBuddy is a locally run daily tracker for Mexico’s IPC, with trend indicators, a plain-language brief, and a watchlist. Here’s what its creator says it does—and what its data and privacy claims do not establish.

BolsaBuddy is described by its creator as a free, locally run daily tracker for Mexico’s IPC index, not a real-time trading terminal. It turns daily market data into trend indicators and a plain-language brief, and lets users keep a watchlist thesis and exit trigger beside a price. The project’s account says it uses Yahoo Finance’s daily ^MXX feed; its implementation and privacy claims have not been independently verified.

What BolsaBuddy is designed to show

The project article presents BolsaBuddy as a response to a simple daily question: what did the IPC do, is it near a high, and what does the move mean in plain language? According to that account, the tracker fetches index data, calculates a set of indicators, and renders the results as a phone-readable HTML page.

  • Daily change and 20-, 50-, and 200-day moving averages
  • Drawdown from the 52-week high, consecutive up or down days, and all-time-high alerts
  • A plain-language daily brief
  • A watchlist with a live price, an investment thesis, and a “kill-trigger”—the condition that would invalidate that thesis

These capabilities are described in the project article, rather than independently confirmed by a code review or hands-on test. The indicators provide context for observing the index; they do not establish likely future performance or tell a reader what to buy or sell.

Data source and freshness

The project article identifies Yahoo Finance’s free daily feed for the Mexican IPC, using the ticker ^MXX, and describes available history extending back to 1991. A daily feed is not evidence of real-time exchange quotes. The article does not establish the feed’s precise update time, completeness, or permissions for a particular use.

For comparison, the Mexican Stock Exchange’s market-information page displays index information and labels it “Information with 20 minutes of delay.” That label describes the exchange page’s displayed information; it does not verify Yahoo Finance’s data timing or the feed used by BolsaBuddy.

What the sample brief looks like

The project article includes a fallback brief dated October 1, 2026. In that historical example, the IPC closed at 63,828.6, down 0.60% for the day, after three consecutive down days. It put the close 11.49% below a 52-week high of 72,111.41 and listed the 20-, 50-, and 200-day averages as 64,377.02, 65,248.02, and 67,215.54, respectively. These are figures quoted in the project article’s example, not current market data or values independently recalculated here.

The example shows how the tracker is intended to combine a daily move with longer-term context. It is not evidence of an investment strategy’s results; the sample itself says, “No investment advice.”

Local processing and the brief

According to the creator’s article, the brief can be generated with a small local model, with a templated version available if that model is unavailable. The creator says the aim is to avoid sending watchlists and investment theses to a closed AI API and to keep the workflow free of API keys and accounts. Those statements describe the project’s design intent; they are not an independent privacy or security assessment, and the article does not establish model accuracy or minimum hardware requirements.

The author says an initial plan to run Gemma on-device was abandoned because the available machine could not hold it. A proposed TabPFN seven-day forecast also brought an account, license acceptance, and API token requirement. The article does not present that forecast as a feature of BolsaBuddy.

Running the project

The project article gives this command sequence:

python3 fetch.py && python3 analyze.py && python3 brief.py && python3 news.py && python3 report.py

It also describes watchlist commands and a cached-data smoke test that can run without a network connection or model. These are author-provided instructions, not verified installation steps. Consult the project’s own current documentation before relying on them; the available account does not establish prerequisites, supported operating systems, or recovery steps for failures.

When BolsaBuddy may—and may not—fit

BolsaBuddy’s described approach suits someone who wants a lightweight daily snapshot of the IPC and values keeping notes on a local watchlist. Its scope is narrower than a live market-data service: the article names a free daily feed, and it does not establish live quotes, broader venue coverage, or investment performance.

Developers who need more structured or potentially live data can investigate alternatives, but should check current terms for freshness, coverage, licensing, cost, and account requirements. The Kun Data API’s public README describes Mexico coverage for BMV and BIVA, token-authenticated access, WebSocket live updates, historical OHLCV, and snapshot queries. That provider-associated documentation does not establish pricing, uptime, licensing suitability for a given application, or independent service quality. For official market context and investor resources, consult the BMV market-information page.
