Bluetooth vs 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse: Which Connection Should You Use?

Use a 2.4 GHz receiver if your mouse offers a faster report rate in that mode; choose Bluetooth to avoid a receiver. The right choice depends on the mouse and devices.

Choose a 2.4 GHz USB receiver when your particular mouse offers a faster report rate in that mode and responsiveness matters; choose Bluetooth when you want to avoid carrying or occupying a port with a receiver and your devices support Bluetooth. A dual-mode mouse lets you switch between the two. Neither connection is universally faster or more reliable: results depend on the mouse, its settings, the host, receiver placement and nearby radio activity.

What is the difference?

A 2.4 GHz wireless mouse connects to the computer through a dedicated USB receiver. Bluetooth connects directly to a host with compatible Bluetooth support, without that mouse-specific receiver. Although both use radio, the practical comparison is between the mouse’s connection implementations—not simply two frequency bands.

For a concrete example, Logitech lists both Bluetooth Low Energy and its LIGHTSPEED 2.4 GHz receiver connection for the G603. Logitech Support says the G603 can connect to a computer, phone or tablet using either the included receiver or Bluetooth. Other mice differ, so check the exact model’s supported modes and host requirements.

Which connection is better for responsiveness?

Look up the report rate for the exact mouse in each connection mode. A higher report rate means the mouse sends updates more frequently; it is one factor in responsiveness, not a promise about total movement-to-screen or click-to-screen latency. The host, firmware, settings and radio conditions also affect the experience.

Logitech specifies a minimum 1 ms (1000 Hz) USB report rate and a minimum 8 ms (125 Hz) Bluetooth report rate for the G603. Its setup guidance says the receiver’s performance mode defaults to 1 ms / 1000 Hz, while endurance mode fixes reporting at 8 ms / 125 Hz; Bluetooth also operates at 8 ms / 125 Hz on this model. These are manufacturer specifications and instructions for the G603, not an independent comparison or a rule for every mouse.

For another receiver-based example, Logitech lists a 1 ms / 1000 Hz USB report rate for the G305 LIGHTSPEED. Its cited specifications describe a 2.4 GHz receiver connection, not Bluetooth.

Which should you choose?

Your priority Connection to consider What to check
Gaming or responsive cursor movement 2.4 GHz receiver, if that mouse has a faster report-rate option in receiver mode Compare the model’s report-rate specifications and settings. Don’t treat report rate as a guaranteed end-to-end latency figure.
No receiver to carry or plug in Bluetooth Confirm that both the mouse and host support the required Bluetooth connection and platform.
Using a tablet or phone Bluetooth, when supported by both devices Check compatibility for the specific mouse and device. Logitech documents G603 Bluetooth setup for computers, phones and tablets.
Several devices or changing situations A dual-mode mouse Verify how switching works, which hosts are supported and whether your preferred settings are available in both modes.
Long battery life Compare the mouse’s modes rather than assuming one protocol lasts longer Look for rated battery life and the report rate associated with each mode; usage conditions matter.
Busy 2.4 GHz surroundings Test receiver placement; Bluetooth is another option if the mouse supports it Move the receiver and mouse to see whether the connection improves. Nearby radio devices can affect results.

Receiver placement and interference

A receiver-based connection is not automatically immune to interference. For the G603 specifically, Logitech advises keeping the mouse and receiver at least 2 m from wireless routers or other 2.4 GHz devices to reduce environmental noise. In noisy environments, it recommends placing the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse. These are Logitech’s model-specific setup recommendations, not universal distance requirements.

For the G603, Logitech says the receiver can plug directly into a USB port or connect using the included extension cable. Its specifications require a USB 2.0 or newer port for the LIGHTSPEED path. Check the port and setup requirements for any other mouse you are considering.

Battery life depends on the mouse and mode

Logitech rates the G603 for up to 500 hours in performance mode or up to 18 months in endurance mode. These are manufacturer estimates for that model, not a controlled comparison of Bluetooth against 2.4 GHz or a guarantee for every use pattern. Logitech says endurance mode fixes the report rate at 125 Hz to maximize battery life. Compare the modes and conditions in the specifications for your own mouse rather than attributing battery life to protocol alone.

Examples of the two connection types

Mouse Connection documented Published rate What the example shows
Logitech G603 LIGHTSPEED LIGHTSPEED USB receiver and Bluetooth Low Energy USB: minimum 1 ms / 1000 Hz; Bluetooth: minimum 8 ms / 125 Hz A dual-mode mouse can offer different report rates by connection. Logitech also lists up to 10 m (33 ft) wireless range for this model; that rated range is not a guarantee in every environment.
Logitech G305 LIGHTSPEED LIGHTSPEED 2.4 GHz USB receiver USB: 1 ms / 1000 Hz A receiver-based example; the cited specifications do not present it as a Bluetooth alternative.

The rates, range and battery estimates above are Logitech’s published figures for the named models, not independent laboratory results. Availability, package contents and compatibility can vary; check the current listing and specifications before buying.

Set up the G603 connection that suits you

Use the LIGHTSPEED receiver

  1. Connect the included receiver directly to a USB 2.0-or-newer port, or use the included receiver extension cable.
  2. Select performance or endurance mode using the mouse’s mode control. Logitech says performance mode defaults to 1 ms / 1000 Hz; endurance mode is fixed at 8 ms / 125 Hz.
  3. If the connection is affected by nearby radio equipment, reposition the receiver and mouse. Logitech’s G603-specific distances are described above.

Use Bluetooth

  1. Confirm the host supports Bluetooth and is compatible with the G603.
  2. Put the G603 in endurance mode and use its easy-switch button to pair it, following Logitech’s device-specific instructions.
  3. Be aware that Logitech says Logitech Gaming Software does not detect the G603 while it is connected over Bluetooth.

These steps and software behavior are specific to the G603. For another mouse, follow its manufacturer’s pairing and mode instructions.
