For an iPhone XR, a Google Cardboard-style smartphone VR viewer is the most relevant type of headset to consider—but compatibility depends on the specific viewer. Google’s iPhone guidance supports Cardboard on iOS 8.0 or later and says to check the individual viewer’s compatibility. That is not a guarantee that every viewer will physically fit the XR.
What kind of VR headset works with iPhone XR?
Look for a smartphone VR viewer designed for Google Cardboard or a similar phone-in-headset setup. It holds the iPhone in front of lenses and relies on compatible apps for VR content. Google describes Cardboard as a simple phone viewer with a button for compatible apps; button design, app support and other features vary by product. See Google’s Cardboard overview.

Google’s iPhone setup guidance specifies iOS 8.0 or later for Cardboard use on iPhone. Check the iOS version installed on your XR and whether the app or experience you intend to use still supports it. Google also advises checking the particular viewer’s website to see whether a phone will work with it.

How to check whether a viewer physically fits the iPhone XR
Apple lists the XR’s body as 150.9 × 75.7 × 8.3 mm, with a 6.1-inch-diagonal display. Google’s general Cardboard overview describes an enclosure for phones with screens up to 6 inches. That general limit does not establish whether a particular viewer can or cannot accommodate the XR: the holder’s internal dimensions and design matter. Compare the exact dimensions and fit guidance for the model you plan to buy. Apple’s specifications are on its iPhone XR technical specifications page.

- High Distinctive Technology: VR Glasses use high transmittance lenses to ensure better clarity. HD optical resin lenses, no stimulating plastic sheet, reduce distortion when magnifying images and provide a wider vision.
- Wide Compatibility: Support smartphones with 5.0-7.0 inch screen, such as Phone 15/14/13/12/11/Pro/Max/Mini/Xs Max/XR/X/Xs, for Galaxy S23/S22/S21 Ultra S10e/S10 Plus/S9 Plus/S8/S8 Plus/Note 10, etc.
- Phone dimensions: Confirm the viewer supports the XR’s width, height and thickness—not just a diagonal screen measurement.
- Case clearance: Check whether the phone must be used without a case or whether the holder allows the thickness of your case.
- Camera and buttons: Look for possible obstruction of the rear camera, side buttons or charging port, especially if the viewer’s design uses a close-fitting tray or cover.
- Adjustment and comfort: Check whether the lenses or phone position can be adjusted, and whether the head strap and face contact points suit your intended session length.
- Retention and controls: Confirm how the phone is secured and whether the viewer has an input method usable by the apps you want.
What to know about Cardboard viewer specifications
Google’s Cardboard design reference specifies 34 mm lenses, an 80° designed field of view and 18 mm eye relief. These are reference-design values, not verified specifications or performance guarantees for every retail viewer. Product listings may use different optics, adjustments and construction; rely on the specifications for the particular model rather than assuming it follows Google’s reference design. The reference is available in Google’s Cardboard manufacturer resources.
Which iPhone XR-compatible model should you buy?
No currently sold, named viewer with explicit iPhone XR fit is established here, so there is no verified model to recommend as a guaranteed fit. Search for a Google Cardboard VR viewer for iPhone as a category, then check the manufacturer’s or seller’s listing for XR-sized dimensions, case clearance and any stated camera or button restrictions. Do not treat the phrase “for iPhone” or “Cardboard compatible” alone as proof of XR fit, and confirm that the apps you want to use support the experience.
