If your Bluetooth headphones suddenly sound muffled, distorted, or keep cutting out, first check what changed: a call or chat app may have activated the headset microphone, the device may have selected the wrong output, or the connection may be struggling. Work through the reversible checks below before assuming the headphones are broken.
Start with the symptom
- Quality drops when a call, meeting, or game chat starts: Check whether the app is using the headphones’ microphone.
- Audio crackles or cuts out, especially while streaming: Compare with downloaded audio while close to the phone or computer.
- Sound is muffled in every app: Check the selected output, then inspect the speaker openings for debris or damage.
- Windows playback is poor across the board: Verify output and format settings, then work through Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooting steps.
If sound changes when a call or chat starts
Some Bluetooth headphones use a lower-quality audio mode while their microphone is active. Apple explains that “When Bluetooth switches to the second mode, audio quality is reduced until the microphone is no longer in use.” On a Mac, quit video-call or chat apps that are using the headset microphone. Check microphone and audio choices on Windows
Look at the app’s audio settings and Windows’ input and output device choices. If the quality change happens only while the microphone is active, the connection mode and hardware support may explain it.
Windows 11 can support stereo playback while the microphone is active through Bluetooth LE Audio, but only with compatible equipment: Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, integrated LE Audio support, suitable manufacturer drivers, and LE Audio-capable headphones. Without the required support, microphone-active playback is mono. Microsoft describes the compatibility requirements and settings in its Windows 11 LE Audio guidance.

If audio cuts out, crackles, or sounds distorted
Compare streamed audio with a downloaded track or other locally stored audio, with the headphones close to the source device. If local playback is better, the streaming path or wireless conditions may be involved rather than the headphone speakers alone.
- Move closer to the phone or computer and reduce obstacles between it and the headphones.
- Try again away from crowded wireless activity.
- If disconnections continue, remove the pairing and pair the headphones again.

If everything sounds muffled
Confirm the audio output
Make sure the phone or computer is sending sound to the Bluetooth headphones, not another output. On Windows, Microsoft also recommends checking the selected audio format and confirming that the device supports A2DP, the Bluetooth profile used for stereo audio streaming.
Inspect the headphones
Check the speaker openings and earpieces for dust, earwax, or other debris, and look for visible damage. Samsung notes that buildup near a speaker or earpiece can muffle sound. Clean only as the headphone manufacturer instructs; cleaning will not repair a damaged component. Samsung’s Galaxy headphone troubleshooting guidance includes these checks.

Use comparisons to locate the problem
Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the cause follows the app, connection, source device, or headphones.
- Microphone inactive vs. active: Does quality drop as soon as a call or chat begins?
- Local vs. streamed audio: Does a downloaded track play cleanly under the same conditions?
- Nearby vs. distant or obstructed: Does moving the source device closer improve playback?
- Same headphones on another device: Does the symptom follow the headphones?
- Another pair on the original device: Does the original phone or computer cause the same problem with different headphones?
If the headphones work normally on another device, investigate the original device’s settings or connection. If the problem follows the headphones across devices, check the manufacturer’s model-specific support guidance.

Windows: work through connection and system checks
If the headphones sound poor across apps on Windows, Microsoft recommends checking the Bluetooth connection and system setup rather than assuming a hardware fault.

- Confirm that the Bluetooth headphones are selected as the sound output.
- Inspect the audio format settings.
- Remove the pairing and pair the headphones again.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver from the computer manufacturer.
- Confirm A2DP support if stereo playback is missing or limited.
- Check for Windows updates and restart if needed.

When to seek service
If the same fault follows the headphones to multiple devices after the checks above, consult the manufacturer’s support guidance for that model or arrange service. Visible damage points to a physical problem that cleaning or re-pairing cannot fix. These general steps cannot determine whether a specific pair is defective or covered by warranty.
