If your Bluetooth headphones disconnect from your phone but work on your laptop, start by troubleshooting the phone—not by replacing the headphones. Test whether the problem follows the headphones to another source, then check competing connections, range, interference, and the settings for the device that drops the connection.
First, find out whether the headphones or the device is the problem
Charge both the headphones and the source device, keep them close together, and confirm the headphones are powered on and connected to the device you intend to use. Then compare two things: whether the headphones stay connected to a second source, and whether another Bluetooth audio device stays connected to the problem source. These comparisons help narrow down the cause, but neither test alone proves which component is at fault.

Compare local audio with streaming
Play audio stored on the device, if available, and compare it with streamed audio. If local playback stays stable while streaming cuts out, the issue may be with the stream or network rather than the Bluetooth link. Apple also recommends reducing distance and obstructions and moving away from busy Wi-Fi areas, poorly shielded cables, microwaves, and wireless speakers when audio cuts out or becomes distorted. - If the headphones disconnect from multiple sources, follow the headphone maker’s instructions for resetting, updating firmware, or arranging service.
- If they work elsewhere but disconnect from one phone, tablet, or computer, focus on that source’s Bluetooth settings, radio, drivers, and saved pairing.
Rule out another device taking over the connection
Temporarily disconnect the headphones from other paired devices and test them with only the problem source. Some compatible headphones support Multipoint, which lets them connect to two audio sources and switch between them. A call or playback on the second device can make a source switch look like a disconnect. Google’s documented Android setup requires Android 8 or later, Google Play Services, and compatible headphones; see Google’s Multipoint setup instructions. Multipoint is not supported by every headphone model.

Fix Bluetooth headphones that disconnect on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Microsoft lists power-saving settings, outdated drivers, and temporary system glitches as possible causes of Windows Bluetooth disconnects. Its wording is a list of common possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular PC. Start with Windows 11’s Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter, then work through the connection and adapter checks below. Microsoft’s general Bluetooth guidance also covers Windows 10, whose support ended on October 14, 2025; Windows 10 users can use the applicable menus, but should account for its end-of-support status.
Check Windows power management and Bluetooth service
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app on Windows 11.
- Check whether Battery Saver or another energy-saving mode is active, and test with it turned off.
- Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, and choose Properties. If a Power Management tab is available, clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” The exact options can vary by adapter and driver.
- Restart Bluetooth Support Service: press Windows+R, enter services.msc, press Enter, find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. If the service is not running, choose Start.
- In Device Manager, update the Bluetooth adapter driver. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, check the PC maker’s support page for the model-specific driver or firmware guidance.

Refresh the pairing and check for interference
- Toggle Bluetooth off and back on, then remove the headphones from the Windows paired-device list and pair them again.
- Install available Windows updates and restart the computer.
- Keep the headphones near the PC and test again. Microsoft notes that some unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports can interfere with Bluetooth; if you use one, move it or its USB accessory and retest.

A USB Bluetooth adapter is a possible remedy if the PC has no Bluetooth or diagnosis points to a faulty built-in adapter. It is not a general fix for headphones that disconnect from one device: first establish that the PC’s Bluetooth hardware is absent or implicated, and check the computer maker’s guidance.

Fix headphones that keep cutting out on iPhone or iPad
Check distance, audio source, and surroundings
Keep the iPhone or iPad close to the headphones, ensure the accessory is charged, and turn it off and back on. Compare locally stored audio with streamed audio. If sound cuts out, reduce distance and obstructions and move away from busy Wi-Fi activity or other potential sources of interference. Apple’s iPhone guide gives approximately 10 meters as a pairing distance reference; it is not a guarantee of continuous audio range in every environment or with every product. Forget and pair the headphones again
- If the accessory worked before, unpair or forget it in Bluetooth settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Put the headphones into discovery or pairing mode using the maker’s instructions, then pair them again.
- If the headphones pair with other devices but not this iPhone or iPad, unpair them from those other devices before trying again. Apple specifically recommends this when an accessory pairs with some devices but not the target device.
- If audio still cuts out, restart the iPhone or iPad and pair the headphones again.

What to check on Android
Google’s cited instructions cover Multipoint setup, not a universal repair procedure for Android Bluetooth dropouts. If your headphones support Multipoint, verify both audio-source connections in Bluetooth settings and test with the second source disconnected. For other disconnects, follow the phone maker’s current Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance and the headphone maker’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming one Android menu path applies to every phone.
