Bluehost AI Gateway gives eligible apps on Bluehost Self-Managed VPS and VDS a shared route to supported large language models (LLMs), with usage paid from a prepaid AI Credits balance. You create an API key in the hosting control panel, configure a compatible app to use it, and pay according to the model’s input and output token rates. The gateway handles access and billing; you still manage your server’s operating system, configuration, and applications.
What Bluehost AI Gateway does—and what it does not do
AI Gateway is a multi-provider access and billing layer for supported LLMs. Instead of separately setting up provider accounts and payment for each supported model, customers use Bluehost AI Credits and a Bluehost API key to connect eligible applications to the gateway. The wallet is shared across qualifying VPS and VDS instances and API keys on the Bluehost account.

Bluehost describes the endpoint as OpenAI-compatible, which gives supported apps a familiar API connection pattern. That does not mean every third-party app or arbitrary model works: Bluehost limits support to eligible applications and publishes a list that can change. Check the current AI Credits help page for the exact app you plan to run.
The service provides access to supported hosted LLMs. It is not a promise of dedicated GPU inference on your VPS, an on-premises model installation, or application management. Bluehost’s Self-Managed VPS description says Bluehost maintains hardware, networking, and virtualization; customers manage the operating system, configurations, and applications. The same distinction matters when using the gateway: it does not take over server administration.

Check app and model compatibility before buying credits
Bluehost’s help page lists OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, n8n, NanoClaw, Sim, Claude Code, GStack, Flowise, BMAD, GatorClaw, Open WebUI, Open WebUI + Hermes Agent, Ollama, Paperclip, Langflow, and Dify. The product page presents a shorter list, so treat the help page and current product information as the authority for whether a particular application is eligible.
Compatibility has two parts: the app must be eligible for AI Gateway, and the model you need must be available through the gateway at the time you use it. Bluehost names providers including Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), OpenAI (GPT), xAI (Grok), DeepSeek, Mistral, Kimi, GLM, and MiniMax. The individual model catalog changes; consult the AI Models and Credit Pricing page before choosing a model or estimating spend.

How to connect an eligible app
- Confirm eligibility. Check Bluehost’s current AI Credits help page for your app, then confirm that the desired model appears in the current model list.
- Buy AI Credits. Choose a prepaid pack from the AI Credits area. You do not need to purchase a new server if you already have an eligible VPS or VDS account.
- Create an API key. In your VPS or VDS panel, open the AI Tooling area and create a Bluehost API key. In Release 1, key creation and copying are manual; the launch article described automatic provisioning and injection as a planned future release, not a current feature. See Bluehost’s AI Gateway launch article.
- Configure the app. Enter the gateway connection details and API key in the app’s supported provider or OpenAI-compatible configuration. Follow the app’s own instructions for the exact fields; the shared API format does not guarantee identical setup screens across apps.
- Verify usage. Send a small test request, confirm the app reaches the intended model, and check the account’s credit balance before moving a high-volume workload to the gateway.
Because the wallet is account-wide, usage from qualifying instances and keys draws on the same balance rather than separate server-specific wallets. Keep the key private and remove or rotate it if it is exposed; a shared billing pool makes unexpected usage relevant to the whole account.
How much Bluehost AI Gateway costs

|---|---|
| 500 credits | $5 |
| 1,000 credits | $10 |
| 5,000 credits | $50 |
| 10,000 credits | $100 |
Bluehost lists a retail value of $0.010 per credit. These are one-time purchases, not a monthly subscription or auto-renewing plan. A pack does not correspond to a fixed number of prompts: usage depends on the selected model and the number of input and output tokens processed.
Estimate model usage with input and output rates
Bluehost’s pricing table charges by credits per one million tokens and separates input from output. Some models also have distinct cache-write and cached-input rates. The following examples are from Bluehost’s table updated September 16, 2026; rates and model availability can change.
Rank #4
| Model | Input rate per million tokens | Output rate per million tokens |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-4o mini | 16.5 credits | 66 credits |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | 110 credits | 550 credits |
For an estimate, multiply expected input tokens by the model’s input rate and output tokens by its output rate, then divide each result by 1,000,000 and add them. Include cache-write or cached-input usage only when the chosen model supports those categories and you expect to use them. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed request price; actual token use varies with prompts, responses, and application behavior.
The examples show why comparing only input rates can mislead: output tokens cost more than input tokens for both listed models, and the difference is model-specific. Use Bluehost’s current model pricing table for the model you intend to use rather than treating these examples as permanent prices.

Credit expiry, refunds, and balance management
- Validity: Credits remain valid for 12 months from the most recent purchase, according to Bluehost’s help page updated September 16, 2026. A new purchase refreshes the validity period for the entire remaining balance.
- Expiry: If the balance expires without another purchase, it resets to zero. The API keys and workspace remain.
- Refunds: Bluehost says AI Credits are non-refundable.
- Alerts: Release 1 has no proactive low-balance or expiry email alerts, so monitor usage and expiry yourself.
Since credits are prepaid and non-refundable, estimate your expected token use and buy an appropriately sized pack. Before relying on a balance for a long-running app, check it periodically and note the date that governs its validity.
