Blue vs. Green Text Messages on iPhone: What’s the Difference?

Blue bubbles use iMessage; green bubbles use RCS, SMS, or MMS. Learn what each route supports, what bubble color cannot tell you, and how to troubleshoot unexpected green messages.

Blue bubbles mean iMessage; green bubbles mean the message went through RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green does not automatically mean something went wrong or that you were blocked. The color shows the messaging route, but it does not identify which green protocol was used or explain why.

What do blue and green message bubbles mean?

  • Blue: iMessage, Apple’s messaging service. It sends over Wi-Fi or cellular data between devices using iMessage.
  • Green: RCS, SMS, or MMS, which use carrier messaging services. All three appear green on iPhone, so the color alone cannot distinguish them.

Apple explains the difference between the routes in its iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS guidance.

What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS?

Route Bubble How it works Features and privacy Requirements
iMessage Blue Apple service over Wi-Fi or cellular data Supports high-resolution photos and videos, documents, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. It is end-to-end encrypted. Cellular-data charges may apply when using mobile data. Both participants must be reachable through iMessage; availability and settings matter.
RCS Green Carrier-provided messaging Supports richer media, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. Apple says end-to-end encrypted RCS (Beta) is rolling out from iOS 26.5 with supported providers; encryption depends on every participant’s provider support. On iPhone, requires iOS 18 or later and a provider that supports RCS in the relevant region. Encryption availability has additional provider and participant conditions.
SMS/MMS Green Carrier-provided text and multimedia messaging Can send texts and media, but SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Requires a text-messaging plan that supports the service.

Apple documents the capabilities and privacy distinctions in its message-route overview and encryption guidance. RCS support varies by provider and region; see Apple’s iOS 26 instructions for setting up Messages.

Why are my iPhone messages green?

Several ordinary conditions can cause a green bubble: the recipient is not using iMessage, iMessage is turned off on either device, iMessage is temporarily unavailable, or Messages needs its settings refreshed after device setup. A group conversation may also use a carrier route when a participant cannot use iMessage. Depending on the participants, settings, connection, carrier plan, and support, that route can be MMS, SMS, or RCS. Apple describes common causes in its guide to green iPhone messages and explains how group text routing works.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

A green bubble by itself does not prove that the recipient blocked you, has a particular kind of phone, or chose to avoid iMessage. Nor does it tell you whether the message was RCS or SMS/MMS.

Are green text messages encrypted?

It depends on the route. iMessage is end-to-end encrypted. SMS/MMS are not. RCS is a separate green route, and Apple says its end-to-end encrypted RCS (Beta) rollout begins with iOS 26.5 for supported providers. For an RCS exchange to be encrypted, every participant’s provider must support the feature. Because all these routes look green, bubble color alone cannot tell you the protection in use.

What should I check if a message is unexpectedly green?

  1. Check iMessage: On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages and make sure iMessage is on.
  2. Check your sending addresses: Open Send & Receive and confirm the phone number or email address you intend to use is selected.
  3. If you recently set up a new iPhone: Update iOS if needed, confirm the intended cellular line is on (especially if you use multiple SIMs), turn iMessage off and back on, then check Send & Receive again.
  4. Check connectivity and carrier support: iMessage, RCS, and MMS need Wi-Fi or cellular-data connectivity as applicable. SMS needs cellular service, except where Wi-Fi Calling supports SMS. Ask your carrier whether your plan and region support the SMS, MMS, or RCS feature you need.
  5. Review fallback behavior: Settings > Apps > Messages > Send as Text Message can let iPhone try SMS automatically when iMessage is unavailable. This changes fallback behavior; it does not turn an SMS into iMessage or make a green bubble blue.

Apple’s message sending and receiving troubleshooting guide covers these checks. Settings labels can vary by iOS release and region, so use the closest matching labels shown on your device.
