For ripping Blu-rays to Plex, choose a drive by its exact model and firmware—not its brand name. If you want to rip UHD Blu-rays, MakeMKV’s UHD guidance calls for a BDXL-compatible drive that supports LibreDrive. For ordinary Blu-rays, verify the drive and software combination too. Compatibility changes, so check MakeMKV’s current drive information before buying or updating firmware.
What makes a drive suitable for ripping Blu-rays to Plex?
The right drive must read your disc format and work with the ripping software you plan to use. Plex comes later in the chain: the drive creates a media file, and the playback device determines whether Plex can play that file directly or needs to transcode it.

- Identify the disc format. Standard Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray do not have identical drive requirements.
- Check the exact drive model and firmware. MakeMKV support can vary by firmware and change with software updates.
- For UHD, confirm BDXL and LibreDrive compatibility. MakeMKV’s UHD FAQ specifies a BDXL-compatible LibreDrive drive.
- Choose a form factor and connection that suit your setup. An internal drive requires a compatible computer connection; an external drive or enclosure can be more convenient, but its USB connection may affect throughput.
- Check playback on your Plex client. A file that was ripped successfully may still need transcoding if the receiving device does not support its format.
UHD Blu-ray needs a more specific compatibility check
For UHD discs, do not treat “Blu-ray compatible” as enough. MakeMKV’s guidance calls for both BDXL compatibility and LibreDrive support. Check the current guidance for the precise drive and firmware rather than relying on a model family, retailer description, or an old compatibility list.
Firmware advice about Pioneer drives changed in November 2025. On November 4, MakeMKV administrator mike wrote: “Today we pushed a major SDF.bin update. Most Pioneer drives should work now as is, without the need for a firmware update.” The statement says most, not all, and does not establish support for every model or firmware. Review the current SDF update and supported firmware information before assuming a Pioneer drive will work as-is.

MakeMKV’s unlocked-drive documentation also notes that support can change as releases add drive families and firmware versions. A compatibility claim made before an update may no longer describe the current situation.
Internal or external: choose for your computer and connection
An internal drive may suit a desktop with the right connection and space. An external drive is easier to attach to a laptop or move between systems. If you use an internal drive externally, the enclosure must match the drive’s size and interface; the USB connection also matters for throughput.

- Please make sure your equipment meet the CyberLink PowerDVD requirement by going through a test by search " Ultra HD Blu-ray Advisor " before purchase. Please note that Cyberlink PowerDVD currently has only PC version. For MAC users there is no suitable UHD blu-ray software yet to the best of our knowledge. So on Mac computer you can only play and write regular blu-ray, DVD, and CD but not the UHD.
- Premium external UHD 4K Blu-Ray Writer Super-Muti drive.
- Support M-DISC BD-R. CNC aluminum body.
- The UHD blu-ray drive can read UHD, read and write regular Blu-Ray, DVD, and CD with proper software. For regular blu-ray, DVD and CD, you can use whatever applicable software that come with your computer, or search for the proper software to install on your computer. For playback UHD blu-ray, we recommend using “CyberLink PowerDVD”. It is a 3rd party software that require additional purchase, and it is the only one that we found is reliable.
- Do not use illegal downgrade firmware or playback software. It may damage the functionality of the UHD drive.
In a May 2020 MakeMKV forum post, administrator mike estimated a USB 2.0 speed cap of about 30 MB/sec and said a USB 3.0 enclosure was needed to reach the full speed of an unlocked drive. Treat that as a technical caveat from that post, not a guaranteed rip speed or a prediction of how long a particular disc will take. Actual performance depends on the drive, disc, connection, and ripping conditions. The same post says its riplock-removal feature does not work with slim drives and is disabled for UHD discs in friendly drives; those limits apply to the feature described there, not necessarily every aspect of drive compatibility today. See the dated LibreDrive v6 discussion.
Why one “best drive” recommendation can mislead
There is no single model recommendation established by these compatibility sources. They do not provide a controlled comparison of read reliability, speed, or performance across drives, and a brand name alone cannot establish whether a particular firmware is supported. Community threads such as “Best UHD Drive” and a discussion of UHD ripping workflows can surface useful questions, but their titles and individual anecdotes are not comparative tests.

- ATP Technology - assure the best burning quality
- Disc Encryption II - double the security
- Drag and Burn - 3 steps to complete burning
- BDXL format support
- Vertical and Horizontal placement - flexible and space saving
- Ripping standard Blu-rays: verify the exact model and firmware with the software you intend to use.
- Ripping UHD Blu-rays: additionally verify BDXL compatibility and LibreDrive support.
- Buying based on a compatibility listing: confirm that it refers to your exact firmware and is still current.
- Using an external setup: match the enclosure to the drive and avoid assuming that every USB connection can deliver the same throughput.
From disc to Plex playback
A successful rip is only one part of the workflow. After conversion, store the resulting file where your Plex Media Server can access it, then check the format supported by the device you use to watch. Plex explains that media formats a device cannot play directly may require transcoding by Plex Media Server in its guide to formats supported on smart TVs. The drive’s ability to read a disc does not guarantee direct playback on every Plex client.
The cited guidance does not establish one ideal encoding, storage capacity, or client configuration for every library. Those choices depend on your collection, available storage, server, and playback devices.
