No—not in stereoscopic 3D if your television does not support 3D. A 3D Blu-ray player and glasses cannot add that capability to a conventional TV. The disc may still play in 2D on some equipment, but that fallback depends on the specific player and disc; check their manuals and packaging.
Why a regular TV cannot show Blu-ray in 3D
Stereoscopic 3D requires the television to display a compatible 3D image. Sony Support states that “3D capability is not something that you can add to add to an existing non-3D TV.” A 3D player can send a 3D signal, but it cannot change what a non-3D screen is capable of displaying. Glasses alone cannot do that either.

A disc might offer ordinary 2D playback, but that is not guaranteed for every player and title. Confirm 2D compatibility in the specific player’s manual and on the disc packaging.

What you need for 3D Blu-ray viewing
Every part of the signal chain must support the same 3D setup. Check these items before connecting equipment:

- 3D-capable TV: Confirm 3D support in the specifications or manual for the exact model. A non-3D TV cannot be upgraded with glasses or a player.
- 3D-capable Blu-ray player: The player must explicitly support 3D Blu-ray playback. Some models may need a firmware update to enable the feature.
- 3D content: The disc must contain a 3D version supported by the player and TV. Check the title’s packaging.
- High-Speed HDMI cable: Sony’s setup guidance calls for a High-Speed HDMI connection between the 3D source and TV.
- Compatible glasses: The glasses must match the TV’s 3D technology and model. Active-shutter glasses are powered and synchronize with the display; passive glasses use polarized lenses and require a compatible screen. Consult the TV manual.
How to connect and start playback
- Connect the 3D Blu-ray player directly to the 3D-capable TV using a High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Turn on the TV and player, then select the HDMI input connected to the player.
- Insert a supported 3D Blu-ray title and start playback.
- Follow the TV’s prompts to detect the signal or select its 3D mode. If the picture is split into two views, check the TV’s 3D format setting; Side-by-Side and Over-Under are formats identified in Sony’s setup guidance.
- Put on the glasses specified for that TV. For active glasses, follow the TV and glasses instructions for synchronization.
If the 3D picture does not appear
If there is no 3D option on the TV, check its exact model specifications first. Then verify that the player supports 3D, its firmware is current if the manufacturer requires an update, and the disc contains supported 3D content. Confirm the HDMI connection and input, and consult the TV manual for the correct 3D format and glasses.
If the TV supports 3D but the image appears as two similar pictures, the incoming signal may be in a format such as Side-by-Side or Over-Under that needs to be selected or detected in the TV’s 3D settings. Incompatible or unsynchronized glasses can also prevent a proper 3D view.

- Does the TV’s exact model documentation explicitly list 3D support?
- Does the player explicitly support 3D Blu-ray playback, and is any required firmware installed?
- Is the disc marked as a supported 3D title, and does its packaging or player documentation clarify whether 2D playback is available?
- Are the glasses the type and model specified for the TV?
- Is the source connected to the TV with a High-Speed HDMI cable?
