Blockshipping’s Container-Shipping Vision: What GSCP Could—and Hasn’t Yet—Proved

Blockshipping’s GSCP was proposed as a shared container registry using blockchain, QR codes and tracking. Historical announcements document development plans, but not industry-scale deployment or verified savings.

Blockshipping proposed a shared digital registry for shipping containers, but the available evidence does not establish that its Global Shared Container Platform (GSCP) is operating at industry scale. Its cost, productivity and emissions figures remain projections or company claims, not independently verified results.

What is Blockshipping’s Global Shared Container Platform?

GSCP was presented as a shared registry for containers, intended to give participating terminals and logistics companies more useful information about container location, availability and timing. Blockshipping described assigning each container a QR code and tracker, alongside a shared digital record and logistics or terminal information. These are proposed features and intended uses; the company’s page does not independently demonstrate live deployments or measured performance. Blockshipping’s GSCP description

The underlying idea is to make asset information easier for authorized participants to find and use. Blockchain-backed records could provide a common record of container-related events, while QR identification and tracking devices could connect a physical container to digital information. The usefulness of such a system would depend not just on the ledger, but also on accurate data capture, participant access, integration with existing systems and agreement over governance.

What did Blockshipping and NNIT announce?

2018: collaboration and proposed registry

On 17 May 2018, Danish IT company NNIT announced an agreement to collaborate with Copenhagen-based Blockshipping on a platform combining blockchain, IoT and sensor technology with cloud infrastructure. NNIT described a planned registry covering approximately 27 million containers. The announcement framed the platform as a way to improve container-industry operations; it did not report that a registry of that scale was already running. NNIT announcement, 17 May 2018

2019: development update

In an update dated 1 April 2019, Blockshipping said it had begun development of the Blockchain Container Register. The company described expected benefits including less container-related fraud, improved financing, lower insurance costs, lifecycle traceability and simpler container transactions. That update documents the project’s stated development status at the time; it does not establish that these benefits were later delivered. Blockshipping development update, 1 April 2019

How large were the promised savings?

The published figures describe different scenarios and should not be treated as measurements of one realized outcome. Neither source provides independent verification that GSCP achieved the stated savings or emissions reductions.

Does GSCP currently exist as a live shipping service?

The available sources do not confirm that GSCP has active customers, live terminal or carrier deployments, or commercial operations today. They also do not establish Blockshipping’s current corporate status or whether development remains active. A present-facing product description is not sufficient evidence of a live service. The most supportable account is that the company proposed GSCP, announced collaboration in 2018 and reported register development in 2019; current adoption remains unverified.

Sands Original Products Modern Oil Tanker Ship Model - 12 Inch Commercial Vessel Replica - Merchant Marine Supertanker - Nautical Decor & Maritime Industry Gift for Adults
  • detailed 12-inch scale model representing a modern commercial oil tanker. This replica celebrates the "titans of trade," featuring the classic flat-deck design, complex piping systems, stern bridge superstructure, and bulbous bow found on real-world supertankers.
  • Unlike standard ship models, this piece showcases the intricate network of deck piping, valves, and catwalks characteristic of liquid cargo vessels. The multi-colored design (green deck, white superstructure, black/red hull) provides an authentic industrial look without the need for painting.
  • Designed as a static display piece for logistics professionals, oil and gas industry workers, merchant mariners, and naval engineers. Its sturdy, flat-bottomed hull sits stable on any desk, shelf, or bookcase, making it a perfect professional accent for a corporate office or home study.
  • This is a specialized model intended for display and appreciation of maritime engineering

That distinction matters when assessing claims about fewer empty-container movements, improved efficiency or lower emissions. Shared visibility could help participants make better decisions, but the sources do not show that GSCP has produced those outcomes in operational use.

How does GSCP relate to other shipping digitization?

Container-asset visibility and electronic trade documents are related digitalization challenges, but they are not the same product problem. GSCP was proposed as a shared container registry and operational-visibility platform. By contrast, the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) announced on 4 June 2026 that CargoX, edoxOnline, TradeGo, WaveBL and eTEU had implemented its eBL Platform Interoperability Standard Annex v.2 and received IGP&I approval. DCSA described the framework as enabling electronic bills of lading to move between different platforms. DCSA announcement, 4 June 2026

The DCSA announcement is an example of standards-based coordination for electronic bills of lading. It does not show that GSCP is operating, connected to those platforms or interoperable with them. A sound comparison of any shipping technology should ask what problem it addresses, what data participants can access, how it integrates into operational workflows, what governance and standards apply, and whether adoption and outcomes have been independently demonstrated.

What would need to be verified before treating GSCP’s benefits as proven?

  • Live use: named terminals, carriers or logistics companies using the platform in routine operations.
  • Integration: evidence that container records and tracking data connect reliably with terminal systems and participant workflows.
  • Governance: clear rules for who can submit, view and correct data, and how disputes or inaccurate records are handled.
  • Interoperability: documented standards or working connections with other systems, rather than an assumption that a shared ledger automatically connects them.
  • Measured outcomes: independently assessed results against a disclosed baseline, including the time period and operating conditions.

Until such evidence is available, GSCP is best understood as a proposed approach to container data-sharing, not a demonstrated industry transformation.
