How to start Into the Valley of Death
The side story is optional and tied to the main mission Recursions and Iterations. During that mission, speak with Pope at the Oldest House and continue the conversation. Walkthroughs differ slightly on the precise dialogue sequence, so if the side mission does not appear, finish the available Pope dialogue and check your quest log. Get Langston’s apartment key and find the apartment
- Travel to the Central Field Office and speak with Langston. He gives you the key to his apartment, according to PowerPyx, Resonant Codex, and AllThingsHow.
- Return to the Sinkhole via the Evacuation Zone route. Use the Personnel Access platform and the Dombrow area as landmarks while heading deeper.
- Look for the yellow tape and the door marked 5 to locate the apartment. Blood splatters and Langston’s directions help lead farther into the area, as described by the walkthroughs.
Set up the carrier to lure Alfred
The apartment sequence requires the carrier and feeder. Resonant Codex gives the most detailed walkthrough of the setup; treat these as guide-reported steps rather than a verified in-game test.

- In the bedroom with the TV, put the carrier on the bed and place the feeder inside it.
- Use the piano.
- Move all four plants out of the room.
- Leave the room and wait for Langston to call before returning.
If Alfred does not enter the carrier, check that you used the TV bedroom, placed both items as described, moved all four plants, and left the room long enough for Langston’s call. These steps and the plants, piano, and call sequence are detailed in Resonant Codex’s walkthrough.

Follow Alfred through the Sinkhole
Once you have the carrier, follow the environmental clues and Langston’s directions farther into the Sinkhole. The guides point to blood splatters, knocked-over plants, and paw prints along the route. Keep following the trail toward Maria rather than treating the apartment as the end of the objective.
Defeat Maria
Phase one
PowerPyx describes Maria as resembling the invisible Hiss encountered earlier in the area. Resonant Codex advises closing the distance to break her shroud before dealing damage; that is one guide’s combat tip, not a universally confirmed mechanic.
Phase two: use Call Cat on the next window
- Place the carrier at the crack in the red wall.
- Watch the moving red glow. When using Call Cat, choose the window the glow is moving toward—not the window it has just reached.
- Repeat until Alfred lands three successful hits. Maria then reappears and can be defeated.
Calling Alfred takes time, so getting into position early can help. The next-window timing and three-hit sequence are described by Resonant Codex and GAMES.GG, with the fight also covered by PowerPyx.
Return Alfred to Dombrow to finish the quest
After Maria is defeated, pick up the carrier and return to Dombrow. Place it by his body to complete the final objective. This return step is separate from the boss fight: the quest is not finished just because Maria has been defeated, according to the walkthroughs from PowerPyx, Resonant Codex, and AllThingsHow.
