Blocking a Stolen SIM Card: A Step-by-Step Guide

Contact your carrier from another device to suspend the stolen SIM, then ask separately about IMEI blocking. Here is the full order of steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your phone or SIM has been stolen, contact your mobile carrier now from another device and ask it to suspend or bar the SIM and the line attached to it. Then make a second, separate request: ask whether the carrier can also block the handset’s IMEI. The first action stops service on your number. The second targets the phone itself. The steps below follow the order to take them in, along with what to do about the phone, your accounts, the police, and getting your number back.

Step 1: Report the theft to your carrier from another device

Use a different phone, the carrier’s website or app on a trusted device, or the emergency contact method the provider publishes. Tell the provider that the SIM and/or handset was stolen and ask it to suspend or bar the SIM and the associated line. Ask what identity checks it needs, and request a confirmation and reference number. Written confirmation that the loss was reported is worth asking for, because you may need it later with a regulator, insurer, or police.

Reporting quickly limits the window for unauthorized calls, texts, data use, and charges, but it does not undo what has already happened. Charges incurred before the line is suspended can still fall to the account holder, depending on the country and the contract, so check your statement and dispute anything unfamiliar. The jurisdiction-specific rules are covered in the table further down.

Step 2: Ask separately for IMEI blocking

A SIM or line suspension and a handset block are different remedies. Suspending the SIM cuts off the service attached to that SIM and account. Blocking the IMEI targets the handset on networks that support it. Ask for both explicitly, because a carrier that bars your SIM has not necessarily blocked the device.

Question SIM or line suspension IMEI block
What it targets The SIM and the service on your account or line The handset itself, identified by its IMEI (or MEID on relevant devices)
What to ask the carrier “Please suspend or bar the SIM and the line.” “Can you block this IMEI, and do you need a police report first?”
Limits Stops service on that SIM; the thief may still be able to use the handset with a different SIM on some networks Prevents network use where participating networks and procedures support it. It does not guarantee that every possible use of the handset is stopped.
Follow-up Restore your number with a replacement SIM or eSIM (see Step 6) Not stated in general. In France, a device blocked through the national process may stay unusable even if later recovered.

Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, states that providers can bar the SIM and can also block the handset’s IMEI. The FCC’s 2021 order distinguishes subscriber-level disabling, which can include the SIM, from device-level disabling through the handset’s equipment identifier.

Step 3: Gather the handset identifiers

Carriers and police will usually ask for the device’s identifiers. Gather them now and store them somewhere other than the phone, such as a password manager, a note in a separate account, or a photo of the box.

  • IMEI: a unique 15-digit serial number, per Ofcom (2024). Dial *#06# on the handset, look in the phone’s settings, or check the original box, the carrier account, or the purchase receipt. On some models it is printed behind the battery.
  • MEID: the equivalent identifier on some CDMA devices. Ask the carrier whether it applies to your handset.
  • Make, model, and serial number: the FCC advises providing these to police, along with the IMEI or MEID.

If you no longer have the phone, your carrier account or the original packaging is usually the quickest source.

Step 4: Locate, lock, or erase the phone

Use the official locate and lock service for your platform, such as Find My on iPhone or Find My Device on Android, if it was enabled before the theft. Lock the device, play any sound or show its location if the service allows it, and keep the phone’s last known position for the police report.

  1. Sign in to the platform’s official locate service from a trusted device.
  2. Locate the handset and lock it with a message or passcode so that anyone who finds it can contact you.
  3. Erase the phone only if recovery looks unlikely or it holds sensitive data. Erase and recovery behaviour depends on the platform and the device’s state, so check the service’s documentation before you rely on it.

If you locate the phone, do not go to get it yourself. The French government’s official guidance says: “If you locate it, it is recommended to notify the police or gendarmerie and not to act yourself.” Pass the last known location to the police and let them decide how to retrieve it.

Step 5: Secure your accounts

A stolen phone can give access to email, banking, messaging, and social accounts that stay logged in on the device. Work through these in order of risk:

  • [High Quality] The small card storage box is mainly made of aluminum and EVA foam. The aluminum is hard and reliable, and has good airtightness. The EVA foam is soft and high-quality, waterproof and resistant to deformation, and has a long service life.
  • Email: change the password first, because it is often the recovery route for other accounts.
  • Banking and payment apps: change passwords, and contact the bank if you see unfamiliar transactions.
  • Messaging and social accounts: change passwords and review the list of logged-in devices and sessions.
  • Recovery methods: if any account sends verification codes by text to the stolen number, switch that account to an authenticator app, a backup email, or a security key.

The FCC guidance also recommends changing passwords if the device cannot be locked.

Step 6: Restore your number on a replacement SIM or eSIM

Once the stolen SIM is barred, ask the carrier for a replacement SIM or eSIM with the same number. Ask how the carrier will verify that you are the account holder, what it will charge, and whether the number can be reactivated later if the phone is found. Ofcom says a replacement SIM with the existing number can be requested without buying a new contract, and that the carrier can explain any fee. Eligibility, cost, and reactivation vary by provider and country, so do not assume a free replacement.

Step 7: Notify the police and your insurer

File a police report, and keep the reference number. Provide the make, model, serial number, and IMEI or MEID. Police reports are often required by insurers and sometimes by carriers, so filing one early avoids a second trip.

If the phone is covered by an insurance policy, notify the insurer promptly. Cover may come from a mobile operator policy, a credit card, or travel insurance. France’s government guidance notes that insurers may require proof of the police complaint. Reporting deadlines and replacement terms vary by policy, so read the wording of your own contract rather than relying on general rules.

How the rules differ by country

Reporting timeframes, charge liability, and blocking periods are set by national regulators, contracts, and provider processes. The three sources below are the ones this guide relies on for jurisdiction-specific figures, all dated by their publication or verification date.

Set a SIM PIN before you need one

A SIM PIN requires a code before the SIM can be used for calls or mobile data. It helps only if it was set before the theft, so it is a prevention step, not a fix for a phone that is already gone. On iPhone and iPad, Apple’s support page (published 19 January 2026) describes the path as Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN. On a dual SIM or eSIM setup, select the number first.

Do not guess an unknown SIM PIN. Apple’s guidance says “Don’t try to guess your SIM PIN.” Wrong attempts can permanently lock the SIM or eSIM and require a replacement, so contact your provider for the PIN or PUK. Menu paths can change with operating system versions, so check the current Apple support page before you configure it.
