The five Chrome weather extensions covered here differ mainly in where the weather appears and how much they add. Weather puts the temperature in your toolbar. The other four describe new-tab pages, and two of them state that they change your search engine to Yahoo. Forecast accuracy and reliability are not part of this comparison, because no independent test of these extensions was found.
This article compares five Chrome Web Store listings and publisher pages as they read on October 7, 2026. None of the five extensions was installed or run. Every detail below comes from what each listing states about itself, so treat the user counts, ratings and update dates as listing data, not measures of quality.

How the five differ
Weather: a toolbar-first extension
Weather is the only one of the five whose listing centers on the toolbar. Its listing describes the current temperature sitting in the toolbar, with current conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, and radar available when you open it. You can let it find your location with permission, or search by city or postal code. Units can be set to Fahrenheit or Celsius, and time to 12- or 24-hour.

The listing also describes an optional lifetime Weather Pro upgrade. Per the listing, it adds a Daily Brief, more saved locations and weather sources, custom toolbar colors, feels-like temperature, rain, snow and severe-weather alerts, and optional morning and evening summaries. These features belong to the paid tier as described; the free listing text does not claim them.
WeatherTab: a configurable new-tab dashboard
WeatherTab’s publisher page, published under the weatherextension.com domain, says it replaces Chrome’s new-tab page. You can keep a simple forecast or add hourly conditions and an interactive radar. The page describes control over location, units, clock, dashboard layout and backgrounds, including 36 weather photographs. Its distinguishing feature is customization. The page does not list version, user or rating figures, so there is no update date to check against.

New Tab Weather: a five-day forecast and Yahoo search
New Tab Weather, from Visicom Media, shows its forecast each time a new tab opens. Its listing describes a five-day forecast and says its web-search feature is powered by Yahoo. It asks for location permission. The listing says the developer will not collect or use data. That is the developer’s own disclosure, not an independent privacy audit.
Weather Tab: extended new-tab panel with Yahoo search
Weather Tab, from TightropeInteractive, changes both the new-tab page and the search engine, with results from Yahoo. Its stated features include local weather, humidity, sunrise and sunset, an hourly forecast and a seven-day forecast. Its listing was last updated September 9, 2023, and shows 10 ratings averaging 3.3 out of 5. Those are old and thin figures, so read them as a description of the listing as it stands, not as evidence of how the extension performs now.

Weather Dashboard: a new-tab panel with environmental extras
Weather Dashboard, from drivesextensions, is the most extras-heavy listing. It describes current conditions, hourly and seven-day forecasts, a 24-hour temperature graph with precipitation probability, air quality, UV index, sunrise and sunset, moon phases, and severe-weather alerts. The alerts are stated to be US-only and sourced from the National Weather Service. You can choose location, Fahrenheit or Celsius, time formats and wind units. The listing shows 18 users and no ratings, so there is little public feedback to read.
Does a weather extension change your search engine?
Two of the five listings say yes. New Tab Weather says its web search is powered by Yahoo, and Weather Tab says it changes the search engine to Yahoo results. WeatherTab offers a choice: the publisher page says search can stay on the browser default or use a provider you select. Weather and Weather Dashboard do not describe any search change in the listings reviewed.

A separately listed extension called “The Weather Tab” is not one of the five compared here. It is a different item from WeatherTab, despite the similar name. Its listing says it changes the new-tab page and search engine, using Bing-powered web search. If you see that name in search results, check which listing you are installing.
Which one shows weather in a new tab?
Four of the five compared listings describe a new-tab experience: WeatherTab, New Tab Weather, Weather Tab and Weather Dashboard. Weather is the exception, since its listing describes the toolbar. If you want the weather to appear as soon as you open a tab, the choice comes down to the four new-tab listings. Among those, New Tab Weather is the only one that states a five-day forecast alone, while Weather Dashboard and Weather Tab list extra data alongside their forecasts.

How to read the listing numbers
User counts, ratings and update dates are useful for noticing that a listing is thin or stale. They are not measures of accuracy, alert quality, speed, battery use or reliability. The ratings and counts here also differ widely: Weather has 5.7K ratings, while Weather Dashboard has none and Weather Tab has 10. The 36-photo figure for WeatherTab is a feature count, not a statistic about use.
Check permissions and privacy before you install
Google’s Chrome Web Store Help documentation explains that an install or update warning shows what an extension may be able to access. It does not, by itself, mean the extension is dangerous. In its words: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Physical location is one of the permission categories Google lists, and optional permissions may be requested after installation.
Use this sequence before you add any of the five:
- Read the permission prompt shown at install. Note whether location is requested and whether the extension asks to read or change data on websites.
- Open the listing’s privacy disclosure and privacy policy. Compare the categories listed with what the extension needs to do its job. The five listings disclose different categories, as the table shows.
- Confirm what the new-tab or search change is. If the listing says it replaces your new-tab page or search engine, decide whether you want that before installing.
- After installing, open chrome://extensions, click Details on the extension, and review its Permissions and Site access settings.
- If a permission does not fit the stated features, remove the extension from chrome://extensions and use Chrome’s default new-tab page.
Google’s general permissions documentation describes how permissions work across extensions. It is not an audit of any specific extension, and the disclosures on each store page are statements from the developer.

A historical note on AccuWeather
In a June 17, 2020 announcement, AccuWeather said Mocha Global had developed a Chrome extension using AccuWeather forecast information. The announcement described location-based local forecasts, multiple locations, RealFeel, a four-day outlook and activity insights. That announcement does not show that the extension is still available or current, so it is not counted among the five options above. Check the live Chrome Web Store before relying on it.
What this comparison cannot tell you
No independent comparison of these five extensions for forecast accuracy was found, and none is cited here. The listings describe features and intentions. They do not show how closely the forecasts match observed weather, how quickly the pages load, or how much memory or battery the extensions use. If those points matter to you, you will need to test the extension yourself.
