Button labels vary by platform, so check the game’s own button settings before following a control notation.
How to get started
- Choose a control type. Select Stylish or Technical at character select. Stylish simplifies some actions; Technical uses standard manual inputs.
- Learn the basics in Tutorial. The official Nintendo Switch manual describes this mode as covering 2D fighting-game fundamentals and BlazBlue systems.
- Repeat actions in Training. Use it to practise situations at your own pace. The manual identifies Training as a practice mode but does not enumerate every available setting.
- Move to Challenge. Its character-specific missions cover command inputs and combos, giving you a place to practise with the fighter you want to play.
Stylish or Technical: which should you choose?

Neither option is the universally correct choice. Stylish can make it easier to explore a character; Technical is the choice when you want to practise standard inputs. You can decide based on what you want to learn rather than treating one as a required upgrade.

How to read the controls
The arcade control description uses eight directions and four main buttons: weak, medium, strong, and a character-specific Drive button. It assumes the character is facing right, and it notes that cabinet layouts can differ. See the official arcade control page for that layout.

In the official PlayStation controls manual, □ is weak/A, △ is medium/B, ○ is strong/C, and × is Drive/D. That manual also lists Taunt, SP, FN1, and FN2, and says mappings can be changed in Options. These PlayStation symbols are an example, not a universal map for PC, Switch, or arcade play.

When you see a direction-and-button instruction, read the direction relative to your character’s facing, then match the attack letter to the button map shown for your platform. If the local button prompts differ from a guide, use your game’s displayed mapping rather than assuming another platform’s symbols apply.
Basic match rules
The official Switch manual says the objective is to reduce the opponent’s life gauge to zero. A standard match is first to win two rounds, with a default round timer of 99 seconds. You can change the number of rounds and time limit in Options. If time runs out, the player with more life wins.

Play solo or explore the game
- Story / Terminology: Follow the story or consult the in-game glossary.
- Arcade: Play the arcade-style mode.
- Score Attack: Compete under the mode’s regulated score-attack rules.
- Grim of Abyss: Play the dungeon-style mode.
- Speed Star: Compete for the fastest clear time.
- Replay Theater / Gallery: Review recorded battles or view collected content.
Play against other people
- V.S.: Set up a versus match.
- Ranked Match: Play network matches whose results are recorded in ranking.
- Player Match: Play using player-match rules; results are not recorded in the ranking.
These descriptions explain the modes, not whether online matchmaking or services are currently available or active.

What to learn about the combat system next
The official manuals identify tutorial material on game rules, basic controls, and BlazBlue systems, but the descriptions available here do not establish the precise operation of every mechanic. For details such as Overdrive timing, Barrier resource costs, character-specific Drive behavior, combo scaling, or frame data, follow the in-game Tutorial or consult a full manual and system documentation for your platform. Avoid applying one character’s Drive behaviour to the entire roster.
