There is no universal winner among Blast, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. Start with the apps and tokens you need, then compare the exact bridge route and its total cost. Before moving meaningful funds, check each network’s current proof, withdrawal, sequencer, and upgrade arrangements: those differences matter more to risk than a broad label such as “Ethereum L2.”
How do the four networks differ?
These networks are not interchangeable products, even when they share technology or settle transactions through Ethereum. Their clearest differences are in their stated features and the tools or ecosystem a particular user or builder needs. The table describes those distinctions without ranking current fees, liquidity, or security settings, which can change and are not established here as fixed values.

| Network | What stands out | What that means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Blast | Blast’s developer page describes it as an L2 with native yield for ETH and stablecoins, and says developers can share in gas-fee revenue. | Consider it if those product features matter to you, but treat yield as a project-stated feature, not a guaranteed return. Check the current deposit terms and independent risk analysis. |
| Arbitrum | Arbitrum’s documentation covers Arbitrum One and Nova, app deployment, bridging, dedicated chains, and Stylus, which supports Rust and other languages compiled to Wasm alongside EVM development. | For everyday use, first check whether your apps and assets are on the specific Arbitrum network you intend to use. Stylus may be relevant to builders; it does not by itself make a network preferable for ordinary transactions. |
| Optimism | OP Mainnet is a network. The OP Stack is modular technology that other networks can use; Optimism documents its architecture, fault-proof, bridge, and interoperability areas. | Do not treat a network built with OP Stack as if it automatically shares OP Mainnet’s governance, live configuration, or risk profile. |
| Base | Base has used OP Stack technology. Its bridge guide includes launch-era descriptions that should not be read as a current account of proof availability or decentralization. | Check Base’s current documentation and an independent technical assessment for its present proof, upgrade, and governance arrangements. “Base is just Optimism” leaves out important chain-level differences. |
Which one should you use for the apps and assets you need?
Choose based on the exact network deployment, not just the app’s name. A decentralized application may be available on one network but not another, or may offer different tokens, liquidity, and features across deployments.
- Confirm the app’s official network information and that you are using the right chain.
- Check whether the token you need is native to that network, issued through a canonical bridge, or brought over by another bridge. Similar token symbols do not prove that two assets have the same issuer or redemption route.
- Check that the asset has enough liquidity for the transaction you plan to make; a token being present does not guarantee a practical route or price.
- For a specific swap or transfer, compare the complete route rather than a network’s general reputation for being inexpensive.
How should you compare fees?
There is no fixed “cheapest L2” answer in the material available here. Fees vary with network conditions, the type of transaction, and the route used. Arbitrum’s Nitro documentation separates an L2 execution component from an L1 data component, so a fee description that mentions only execution can miss part of the cost.

Before confirming a transaction, inspect the wallet or app’s quoted network fee and any swap, bridge, or conversion charges. Compare the same task on each network, at roughly the same time, and include the cost of getting funds onto and off the network. A past fee figure or a generic claim that a network is “cheap” is not a reliable estimate for your transaction.
What security questions matter beyond the L2 label?
Ethereum.org’s explanation of optimistic rollups describes transaction batches posted to Ethereum and Ethereum contracts used for settlement and dispute handling. Publishing transaction data can let others reconstruct state, but it does not prevent an operator from censoring transactions, going offline, or delaying users. The practical recourse depends on that rollup’s forced-inclusion and withdrawal paths.

Before relying on a network, investigate how its state is validated and who can change or interrupt the system. In particular, find out whether proofs are active and permissionless, who can propose or challenge state, how long an exit may take, and what users can do if the sequencer or proposer fails. Also check who can upgrade contracts, whether upgrades are delayed, and whether a council or other authority can pause or override the system.

How do you choose a bridge route?
Choose a route for its security assumptions and the asset it delivers, not speed alone. Ethereum.org’s bridge guide distinguishes native bridges, validator- or oracle-based bridges, generalized message-passing bridges, and liquidity networks. These designs can differ in security, convenience and completion time, connectivity, support for complex messages, and cost-effectiveness.
- Identify the exact sending and receiving networks and the asset representation you expect to receive.
- Check the route’s own documentation for its trust model, supported tokens, fees, and expected completion time.
- Confirm how withdrawals work, including any wait or exit process, before depositing funds.
- Verify the destination network and token in your wallet before approving a transaction.
A third-party bridge may offer a faster or less expensive route while relying on different validators, liquidity providers, or contracts than a native bridge. Bridges also introduce smart-contract and systemic risks; no route should be treated as risk-free.

What should builders compare?
For a builder, compare the deployment environment and the operating services an application will depend on. Arbitrum Stylus may be relevant if a project benefits from Rust or other Wasm-compiled languages alongside EVM development. OP Stack compatibility may matter if a project needs that infrastructure or its tooling. Neither factor alone determines the best chain.

Quick Recap
- Confirm language, tooling, and contract compatibility for the intended deployment.
- Check RPC and indexing availability, and whether required apps, assets, bridges, or interoperability features are supported.
- Review the target chain’s own governance, upgrade, proof, and operational arrangements rather than inferring them from its software stack.
A practical decision sequence
- List your requirements: name the apps, tokens, and transaction you need to use.
- Check deployments and liquidity: verify availability on each specific network you are considering.
- Compare full route costs: include the bridge or funding route as well as the transaction itself.
- Inspect security and exits: review current proof, sequencer, data, withdrawal, and upgrade arrangements for that network.
- Choose for your use case: for a builder, add tooling and infrastructure dependencies; for a user, prioritize the working app and asset route you need.
