Neither is an objectively better pick for every player; the deciding factors are premise, interaction style, and the content you are comfortable with.
How the stories and settings differ
Blair Witch: a missing-person search in the forest
Set in 1996, Blair Witch follows Ellis, a former police officer with a troubled past, as he joins the search for a missing boy in Maryland’s Black Hills Forest. The official game site describes the forest as cursed and as a place where time and space can warp. That makes the setting—and the search through it—the central draw.

Outlast 2: an investigation in the Arizona desert
Outlast 2 follows Blake Langermann, a cameraman and investigative journalist working with his wife, Lynn, on a case that takes them into the Arizona desert. Red Barrels’ official game page places the story around Blake’s search for Lynn, while Steam’s listing identifies Sullivan Knoth and his followers in Temple Gate as part of the setting.
What you do as a player
Blair Witch combines exploration with tracked behavior
Ellis is accompanied by Bullet, his dog. In an Xbox Wire article published August 30, 2019, Bloober Team writer Barbara Kciuk says the game “features a number of alternative endings.” The article explains that outcomes respond to the player’s actions and reactions, including how Ellis treats Bullet, whether the player destroys encountered totems, and how they respond to calls. There is no dialogue-choice wheel described as the mechanism for these outcomes.

Some encounters offer a tactical choice: use the flashlight beam against forest creatures, or switch it off and use the camcorder’s night vision to try to sneak past them. That gives Blair Witch a mix of exploration, companion interaction, and situational decisions.
Outlast 2 is presented as a single-player survival-horror game
The US PlayStation store lists Outlast 2 as a one-player PS4 game, and Red Barrels classifies it as survival horror. Those descriptions establish the player count and genre, but they do not by themselves establish a particular combat or stealth system. Choose it for Blake and Lynn’s investigation and the Arizona setting rather than assuming mechanics not specified in those listings.

Which is scarier?
There is no measured scare ranking in the available game and platform descriptions, and fear is subjective. If a cursed forest, a missing child, and a dog companion make Blair Witch more unsettling to you, start there. If Blake’s search for Lynn and the Arizona desert premise are more disturbing, Outlast 2 may land harder. Use the content information below to screen for specific material rather than treating “scarier” as an objective comparison.

Release-date and platform notes
For Outlast 2, Red Barrels lists April 25, 2017 as the release date on its general game page. The US PlayStation store lists April 24, 2017 for the PS4 release. These are the dates stated by the respective publisher and platform listings; use the PlayStation date specifically when referring to the PS4 record.
Red Barrels also says that Outlast 2 and Outlast: Bundle of Terror became available in limited-edition physical form for Nintendo Switch on October 26, 2018. That historical note does not establish current stock or availability in any region, so check a seller’s current listing if you are specifically looking for a Switch copy.
