BlackRock Says AI Agents Could Drive Future Crypto Demand

BlackRock’s thesis is that AI agents could need programmable payments for digital services and computing. Stablecoins may lead, but agent-driven activity remains limited.

BlackRock argues that AI agents could create demand for programmable payment infrastructure as they pay for API calls, data and computing resources. Its October 5, 2026 paper, The Machine-Native Economy: AI and Digital Assets, expects stablecoins to lead any transactional use—but describes agent payments and markets for computing capacity as nascent, not as an established source of crypto demand.

Could AI agents drive demand for crypto?

That is BlackRock’s forward-looking thesis, not a report that AI agents already account for a material share of crypto transactions. The paper connects two systems that software can process: AI models represent information as numerical tokens, while blockchains represent value or entitlements as digital tokens that can be verified, transferred and settled programmatically.

In BlackRock’s framing, AI is “machine-native intelligence” and digital assets are “machine-native money.” The practical idea is that an agent capable of planning and carrying out tasks might need to make small payments without asking a person to approve each one. That could include paying for an API call, a piece of on-demand data or computing time.

BlackRock says blockchain rails may suit high-frequency, sub-cent machine-to-machine payments. That does not mean every AI-related payment needs a blockchain: the paper expects traditional payment systems to remain important when people or businesses are on the other side of a transaction.

How might AI agents use stablecoins?

Stablecoins are digital assets designed to track a reference currency, commonly the US dollar. BlackRock expects them to lead transactional use by agents because a more predictable unit of account can make prices and settlement easier to manage than a volatile cryptoasset. The paper does not identify a particular stablecoin, network or token as the winner.

BlackRock points to a broader market that is already substantial, while cautioning that these figures are not measurements of agent activity: stablecoin circulating market capitalization exceeded $300 billion as of September 2026, and adjusted stablecoin transaction volume exceeded $11 trillion in 2025. The paper compares that volume with Visa’s and Mastercard’s annual payment volumes in broad terms; it does not attribute those stablecoin transactions to AI agents.

If more activity flows through permissionless networks, it could increase demand for blockspace, validator services and transaction fees. How much value a network captures would depend on its design, and BlackRock does not quantify the likely benefit for any network.

Where x402 fits

BlackRock names x402, an open payments protocol developed by Coinbase that uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status to facilitate machine-initiated payments. The paper presents x402, alongside adaptations of traditional payment rails, as an emerging transaction layer for agent workflows—not as proof that a specific provider or token has achieved adoption.

Why not use traditional payments for everything?

BlackRock’s argument is about fit, not the disappearance of existing payment systems. A machine-to-machine task may involve many small, frequent payments that software needs to initiate and settle automatically. By contrast, business-to-machine and consumer-to-machine transactions can still use traditional rails, particularly where existing authorization and payment arrangements serve the people and organizations involved.

The relevant questions are whether a payment can be automated, whether very small and frequent charges are practical, how predictable the price is, and what authorization and settlement the transaction requires. The answer can differ by provider and transaction; BlackRock does not claim that traditional systems are uniformly unable to support automated payments.

Could computing capacity become a digital-asset market?

BlackRock also considers a market for standardized claims on computing capacity. Training and running AI models require computing power and energy; as those inputs grow in importance, businesses may want ways to price capacity, finance access to it, or hedge supply and cost risks.

A standardized contract could represent a claim on processing resources or usage rights. BlackRock says exchange-traded compute futures might eventually aid price discovery and hedging as the idea matures. It does not present an established product market or compare available futures.

What would need to be standardized?

A claim on “compute” is not self-explanatory: capacity can differ by hardware and performance, while location affects energy economics. Contracts would also need workable settlement mechanics. BlackRock identifies these as design challenges, so a digital claim alone would not make computing capacity interchangeable or guarantee a liquid market.

What BlackRock’s paper establishes—and what it doesn’t

The paper lays out a possible infrastructure opportunity, not evidence of realized demand or an investment recommendation. BlackRock’s conclusion is: “The ecosystem remains nascent, with agentic payment activity and compute-market liquidity still limited.”

  • It argues that: autonomous software may need programmable ways to pay for digital services and computing resources.
  • It expects stablecoins to lead transactional use: the thesis is not specifically a prediction about Bitcoin demand.
  • It sees compute contracts as a possibility: standardization and other design issues remain unresolved.
  • It does not establish: what share of crypto transactions comes from agents, which token or network captures the most value, or that agent-driven demand is already material.
