BlackBerry DTEK60: Specs, Security Support and Whether It’s Worth Buying in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The BlackBerry DTEK60 was a high-end Android phone when it launched in 2016, with a sharp AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 820 processor and BlackBerry security software. It is not a suitable secure everyday phone in 2026: BlackBerry lists its Android 6.x support as ending in August 2018. Today it makes most sense as a collector’s device or offline secondary handset, provided its battery and hardware are sound.

What was the BlackBerry DTEK60?

Announced on October 25, 2016, the DTEK60 was BlackBerry’s second DTEK-branded Android smartphone. It was a full-touchscreen phone, not a physical-keyboard BlackBerry, and it did not run BlackBerry 10 or the classic BlackBerry OS. TCL manufactured the hardware; BlackBerry supplied the brand, Android software customizations and security and productivity features. BlackBerry’s launch announcement described the device and its positioning: BlackBerry’s October 2016 announcement.

It launched at about $499 in the United States, positioning it above the less expensive DTEK50. The price varied by market and retailer. At the time, its Snapdragon 820 put it among high-end Android phones; that historical position should not be confused with how it performs or what it can run today.

BlackBerry DTEK60 specifications

Specification Details

Operating system at launch Android 6.0/6.0.1 Marshmallow, depending on description and regional software
Display 5.5-inch AMOLED, 2,560 × 1,440 (Quad HD), approximately 534 ppi
Processor and graphics Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, quad-core Kryo CPU, Adreno 530 GPU

Rear and front cameras 21 MP rear; 8 MP front
Battery 3,000 mAh, non-removable
Biometrics Fingerprint reader
Wireless Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS

Dimensions and weight Approximately 153.9 × 75.4 × 7 mm; 165 g
Port and charging USB-C; Quick Charge support
Color Black

These figures describe the model’s specifications, not the condition of a particular used phone. The 2 TB figure is a listed microSD capacity, not built-in storage or a guarantee that every card and firmware configuration will work. The 32 GB internal storage is modest by current standards, and system files take up part of it. A card can add room for media, but test it before relying on it.

Design, display and hardware

The DTEK60 had a thin, glass-bodied design, a fingerprint reader, USB-C and a 5.5-inch high-resolution AMOLED display. Its Quad HD resolution made text and images look sharp, while AMOLED offered deep blacks and strong contrast. The large screen suited email, documents and video, but this is a 2016 panel, not a modern high-refresh-rate display. On a heavily used example, check for OLED burn-in; the high-resolution screen can also be demanding on an already aged battery.

The glass finish looks and feels more premium than many phones of its era, but it can crack or show wear. The sealed battery is not a simple user swap, and the DTEK60 lacks the distinctive physical keyboard found on BlackBerry’s later KEY devices. Contemporary coverage described its relationship to TCL and Alcatel hardware, but it is safer to call it TCL-manufactured rather than assume it is identical to another model. See TechRadar’s DTEK60 review.

Performance, camera and battery today

Performance

At launch, the Snapdragon 820 and 4 GB of RAM made the DTEK60 a fast, competitive Android phone. In 2026, its usefulness is limited less by its original class than by its age: Android 6-era app compatibility, older storage and reduced power efficiency. Some current apps may refuse to install, offer only an old version, or fail to work properly. Do not count on it for demanding games or as a dependable productivity phone.

Camera

The 21 MP rear and 8 MP front cameras were respectable figures for the time. A contemporary Android Central report noted praise for image clarity, but megapixel count alone does not determine image quality. Modern phones generally have stronger low-light processing, HDR, stabilization, autofocus consistency and video processing. A working DTEK60 may still take casual daylight photos, but its camera is not a reason to buy one now.

Battery and charging

The original battery was rated at 3,000 mAh and the phone supported Quick Charge; PhoneArena’s specifications list those features. That rating says nothing about a used unit’s present capacity. A battery that may be nearly a decade old could have lost substantial runtime, and a reported capacity reading is not proof of good health.

Before buying, ask whether the battery has been replaced and whether the phone shuts down under load, heats abnormally, or charges inconsistently. Inspect the USB-C port for looseness. A swollen battery or unusual heat warrants stopping use and arranging professional inspection, not continuing to charge the phone.

Security, Android version and support

The DTEK app gave users a view of device security posture and app permissions. BlackBerry also emphasized security updates during the phone’s supported period and included productivity software such as BlackBerry Hub. Those features were a meaningful historical selling point, not a substitute for current patches.

The DTEK60 launched on Android Marshmallow, generally listed as Android 6.0 or 6.0.1. BlackBerry’s lifecycle page lists the DTEK60’s Android 6.x end of life as August 2018. It says no new software versions, security fixes or workarounds are generated after end of life: BlackBerry smartphone and tablet operating-system lifecycle information. The DTEK dashboard cannot make an unsupported Android release equivalent to a currently patched phone.

Android compatibility once gave the DTEK60 access to a broader app ecosystem than BlackBerry 10. That does not ensure current apps will work. Banking, streaming, messaging, authentication and other apps can change their minimum Android requirements; Google services and app behavior can also vary with regional firmware and update history. Sideloading old APK files is not a dependable or safe way to restore modern app support. The sources establish Marshmallow as the launch platform and the end of Android 6.x support; do not assume a later official upgrade without evidence for the exact model.

Will a DTEK60 work on your carrier?

There is no universal answer for a used DTEK60. Model variant, supported LTE bands, VoLTE configuration, carrier approval, lock status and IMEI eligibility all matter. Variants commonly identified as BBA100-1 and BBA100-2 may differ by market. One GSM-unlocked used listing describes compatibility with AT&T, T-Mobile and other GSM networks while excluding Verizon and other CDMA networks; that is a seller claim about a listing, not a guarantee for every unit or current carrier policy. See the used-market listing and verify with your carrier.

“Unlocked” usually means the SIM lock was removed; it does not promise that a carrier will activate the phone. Missing bands, VoLTE support or an unacceptable IMEI can still block service. Back Market’s carrier compatibility guidance advises checking the device’s lock status and compatibility. Its Android carrier connection guidance recommends checking the IMEI through the carrier’s BYOD process.

  1. Ask for the exact model number and the device’s IMEI before purchase.
  2. Check the IMEI with the intended carrier’s official BYOD or activation checker.
  3. Confirm the model’s LTE bands and VoLTE profile meet that carrier’s current requirements.
  4. Confirm it is actually network-unlocked and eligible for activation; do not infer this from “GSM” in a listing.
  5. Buy with a return window so you can test service and hardware promptly.

After delivery, test calls, SMS, LTE data, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, the camera, fingerprint reader, charging and microSD card mounting and file transfer. Test the earpiece and microphone as well.

What to inspect when buying one used

  • Check for swollen battery symptoms, abnormal heat, cracked front or rear glass, and OLED burn-in.
  • Test fingerprint recognition, camera focus, earpiece, microphone and USB-C charging for intermittent faults.
  • Ask about water damage or corrosion, battery replacement and included accessories; do not assume a replacement battery restores factory performance.
  • Verify the IMEI is not blocked and make sure the phone can be factory-reset and activated without a previous owner’s account lock.
  • Test the microSD slot with a card you can afford to remove or replace. Old, damaged or counterfeit cards are not dependable storage.

Repair parts and competent battery service may be difficult to source for a device this old. Treat the phone’s condition and return terms as more important than its original specification sheet.

Who should consider the DTEK60?

Use case Verdict
Secure primary or business phone No. Discontinued software support makes it unsuitable for security-sensitive use.
Banking, password management or work credentials No. Do not rely on it for sensitive accounts or communications.
Cheap emergency phone Usually not. Cellular activation is uncertain until the exact unit is checked with the carrier.
Collector or BlackBerry history enthusiast Potentially, if the price and condition make sense and limitations are understood.
Offline media player, camera or retro Android handset Possibly, if battery condition and the apps or files needed for offline use are suitable.

Compared with the DTEK50, the DTEK60 was the higher-end DTEK model. The Priv offered a physical keyboard but was an older, different Android-era device. The later KEYone and KEY2 also have physical keyboards, but their age does not by itself make them current or supported choices. For a phone that needs modern apps, patches and dependable carrier service, a current or more recent refurbished Android phone is the more practical direction; check that device’s own software-support policy and carrier compatibility rather than buying on brand nostalgia alone.
