The owner may still see an anonymous viewer entry, and LinkedIn does not promise that this removes every record of your activity. Private mode conceals your identity in profile-view attribution; it is not total invisibility.
What the profile owner can see
When you view a member’s profile while signed in, LinkedIn’s profile-viewing option determines how your visit is attributed. In Private mode, the owner may see a generic entry such as “LinkedIn Member” instead of your name and profile details. LinkedIn says even Premium members cannot identify people who viewed in Private mode (LinkedIn’s explanation of Private mode viewers).
This is anonymity in the Who’s viewed your profile feature, not a guarantee that LinkedIn keeps no internal record or that other activity is hidden. A connection request, follow, message, like, comment, or other action can identify you or generate a separate signal.
Turn on Private mode before viewing the profile
LinkedIn’s documented menu labels can shift with interface updates. If a label differs, look under Visibility for Profile viewing options. LinkedIn says changes save automatically (profile-viewing visibility settings).

On desktop
- Sign in to LinkedIn and click the Me icon at the top of the homepage.
- Choose Settings & Privacy, then open Visibility.
- Under Visibility of your profile & network, select Profile viewing options.
- Choose Private mode.
- Open the profile you want to view.
In the mobile app
- Tap your profile photo, then tap Settings.
- Open Visibility and tap Profile viewing options.
- Select Private mode, then open the profile.
Set the option first and leave it on while you do your research. LinkedIn does not promise that switching modes after a visit retroactively anonymizes it.
Choose the right profile-viewing option
LinkedIn provides three options. The middle option is not as anonymous as its name may suggest: generalized details can still narrow down who you are, particularly in a small workplace, school, or industry.

Private viewing affects the viewer information available to you, and the effect depends on your account type:

- Basic (free) members: LinkedIn says browsing in Private mode means you cannot see the names of people who viewed your profile.
- Premium members: You may retain access to available viewer information and insights while browsing privately, subject to those viewers’ privacy settings. Premium does not reveal the identity of someone who viewed you in Private mode.
These limits are described by LinkedIn for viewer information and account access and Private mode viewers.
Search previews and other actions can still signal interest
Do not assume a search preview is consequence-free. LinkedIn says selecting a person’s search suggestion when it includes a profile picture and description—or pressing Enter while that suggestion is highlighted—may display a mini profile, count as a profile view, and result in a notification depending on settings. Turn on Private mode before searching for or opening the person.

Private mode does not conceal actions such as following the person, sending a connection request or message, or engaging with their posts. Avoid those actions if your goal is not to signal interest. LinkedIn also notes that a viewer’s privacy settings affect profile-view history (profile-view history).

Browser Incognito or Private Browsing
A browser’s private window is mainly about what the browser retains locally. It does not change your LinkedIn profile-viewing option. If you sign in to LinkedIn in that window, your account’s selected option still governs profile-view attribution.

Viewing while logged out
Logging out may let you see a public version of a profile without attaching a signed-in LinkedIn account to the visit, but it is not a substitute for Private mode when you want the full signed-in experience. The profile owner controls which sections are publicly visible, and non-members may see only a simplified subset. Public-profile visibility also affects what can appear in search engines and approved services (public-profile visibility; what people can see on a profile).
If you already viewed the profile with your name showing
Switch to Private mode before any further visits, but do not count on the setting to erase or relabel an earlier view. LinkedIn does not promise retroactive removal. Avoid follow-up actions that could draw attention; blocking is not documented as a reliable way to delete a prior view or every associated count.
Why third-party anonymous-viewer tools are a poor substitute
LinkedIn’s own Private mode is the direct option for signed-in profile viewing. An outside viewer may show only publicly available or indexed information, which can be incomplete or stale. Be cautious of services that ask for LinkedIn credentials or broad account permissions, promise guaranteed invisibility, or claim they can bypass another member’s settings. There is no basis here to treat such a service as a more reliable way to view a full LinkedIn profile anonymously.
If a profile is unavailable
Private mode changes how your signed-in visit is attributed; it does not grant access to profiles or sections you otherwise cannot view. An inaccessible profile may be non-public, restricted by the member, unavailable to logged-out visitors, affected by a block or account relationship, or reached through an outdated URL. LinkedIn members can control public-profile sections and discovery outside LinkedIn (profile discovery and visibility controls; public-profile visibility).
