Black Ops Cold War Won’t Launch on PC: Fixes to Try in Order

Start with the launcher’s file repair, then check Windows and DirectX compatibility and close possible software conflicts using Activision’s guidance.

If Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will not launch on your PC, first repair its files in the launcher you use. Then check DirectX and Windows compatibility, and close software that may interfere with startup. These steps follow Activision’s support guidance; none can identify the cause of every individual launch failure.

1. Repair the game files in your launcher

Activision’s PC troubleshooting page, dated November 12, 2020, recommends checking the installation before moving on to deeper system changes. Use the workflow for your copy of the game:

Launcher Repair option
Battle.net Scan and Repair
Steam Verify the integrity of the Game Files

Let the check finish, then try launching the game. Close other applications that could interfere with the game or launcher while troubleshooting. Activision’s PC troubleshooting instructions cover both launcher paths.

2. Check Windows and DirectX compatibility

Activision states that Black Ops Cold War requires a DirectX 12-compatible system. Its troubleshooting page says Windows 8 does not support DirectX 12. For Windows 10, it gives version 1803 as the minimum; the system-requirements page specifies 64-bit Windows 10, version 1803 or later.

The hardware list below is what Activision published on August 5, 2021. It is a dated compatibility baseline, not a current driver recommendation. Activision describes these specifications as applying to desktop PCs and cautions that laptop graphics models can differ from similarly named desktop cards and may be unsupported.

Component Minimum Recommended for medium settings
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit, version 1803 or later Windows 10 64-bit, version 1803 or later
Processor Intel Core i3-4340 or AMD FX-6300 Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Memory 8 GB RAM 12 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 / GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon HD 7950 Activision’s cited requirements page does not give a recommended graphics model in the listed figures used here.

Activision also lists DirectX-compatible sound hardware and broadband internet as requirements. See its minimum and recommended system requirements for the published specifications. The page’s storage figures are from the game’s release era, so they should not be treated as current free-space requirements.

3. Close potential software conflicts

Background utilities can interfere with the game or its launcher. Activision’s troubleshooting guidance specifically names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts. Close these if they are running, along with overlays, recording software, and input-remapping tools, then try launching again.

If startup still fails, Activision recommends a clean boot so Windows starts with only essential programs and services. Its crash guidance warns that third-party applications may disrupt the boot process even when they are not visibly running at the moment you start the game. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version when performing a clean boot, and restore normal startup afterward.

Review security and related settings cautiously

  • Activision’s 2020 troubleshooting page recommends adding the entire game folder to your antivirus exception list. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee or a universal security recommendation. Only make an exception if you trust the installation and understand the protection trade-off.
  • If you use Razer Synapse, Activision advises updating it.
  • If you previously disabled Windows ASLR, Activision advises re-enabling it. Do not change security settings blindly; check what was changed and why.

The same troubleshooting page contains dated, vendor-specific antivirus notes. Because their applicability can change with software versions, use your current security software’s documentation rather than assuming those old instructions still match your setup.

4. Put reported crash codes in context

Activision’s Known Issues page, dated July 7, 2023, lists PC crash or freeze reports involving error codes 887A0005, 0x0 (0xA2E8EF8F) N, and 0x0 (0x1AEC5F31) N. The page associated those reports with advice to use current PC drivers and close background applications. These codes are not, by themselves, a diagnosis, and the dated listing does not establish whether the reports remain active today.

In its March 5, 2024 crashes or game freezes guidance, Activision says PC crashes can occur during launch or in public Multiplayer and recommends confirming minimum specifications, closing background applications, and using driver versions shown on its support page. Check Activision’s current support information for driver guidance rather than relying on an old version number.

5. If it still will not open

Before contacting Activision Support, collect details that can help narrow down the failure:

  • Whether you use Battle.net or Steam
  • Your Windows version
  • Your CPU and graphics card model
  • Whether the game process appears in Task Manager after you try to launch it
  • Any exact error message or code
  • Which repair and compatibility checks you have already tried

Activision’s support pages do not prescribe this exact intake list, but providing the specifics can make it easier to describe what happens and avoid repeating steps.
