Cortex is a small Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 map listed for 6v6 and 2v2. Its key decision is whether to contest the central underpass, take the exposed skybridge sightline, or use the Reactor vent route to reach the bridge from an unexpected angle. Activision’s official Cortex map guide identifies the underpass as the map’s heart and highlights the close vat chambers, parked vehicles, and vent shortcut.
How Cortex is laid out
The map is set in a cliffside Guild laboratory. Its main spaces include vat chambers, an adjoining autopsy and morgue, the underpass, and a narrow skybridge over the water. The underpass and skybridge form a useful orientation point: one is a central route to contest, while the other is a more exposed lane with a long view across the map.

Activision lists Cortex for both 6v6 and 2v2 multiplayer. The official launch overview classifies it as small-sized for both formats; an earlier September 2025 multiplayer deep dive also identified it as a core 6v6 launch map and a beta map. These are official format and scale classifications, not comparative measures of balance or weapon performance. Activision’s multiplayer page lists the current formats, while the launch map and modes overview gives the size classification.

Contest the underpass and central junction
The underpass is a natural focal point for controlling movement through the middle. From the nearby junction, the official guide suggests using the vehicle to take shots, then dropping back before opponents can respond. An alcove near the route can help break sight from players advancing along the Skybridge. Treat the vehicle and alcove as pieces of cover and concealment, not as guarantees of safety.

Use the Skybridge carefully
The Skybridge is narrow and exposed. A low wall to its north offers a long view down nearly the whole map, which can suit a scoped weapon when targets are at distance. That position also makes the user visible along a prominent lane; avoid staying there after opponents have a chance to respond. These are recommendations in Activision’s map guide, not independently tested weapon or balance findings.
Open the Reactor vent shortcut
Shoot or melee the vent covers to connect the Reactor room with the north end of the Skybridge. Once opened, the passage provides a shortcut as well as a potential ambush route. Check whether the covers have been cleared before relying on the connection, and account for opponents watching either exit.

Expect close fights in the Vat Chamber
The large red vats can obstruct movement and visibility in the tight Vat Chamber. Activision’s guide recommends shotguns for this close-quarters space. The vats can also interrupt sightlines, so check around them as you enter rather than assuming a clear route through the room.
Make deliberate use of vehicle cover
Parked vehicle beds provide a ledge for cover and a position to mount a weapon. The official guide also suggests going prone to reduce your profile before counterattacking. Use the cover to limit exposure, but do not mistake a low profile for protection from every angle.

How to choose a route
- For central control: Work around the underpass and its junction, using the vehicle and nearby alcove to manage exposure.
- For a long sightline: Take the northern low wall by the Skybridge, but be ready to leave once opponents focus on the lane.
- For a less direct approach: Open the Reactor vent covers and use the connection to the north end of the bridge.
- For close-range engagements: Expect obstructed movement around the vats and prepare for short sightlines in the Vat Chamber.
