A “black card” usually means the American Express Centurion Card, but the term is not a standard product name. Centurion is invitation-only: American Express policy describes selected customers with substantial spending history or a financial portfolio that supports a high credit line as potential targets. Meeting a stated criterion does not guarantee an invitation, and Amex does not publish a personal qualification formula.
What does “black card” mean?
The phrase most often refers to the American Express Centurion Card, commonly called the Amex Black Card. It can also refer to other premium cards marketed with “Black” in their names—or simply to a card that is black. Color alone says nothing about a card’s eligibility rules or exclusivity.

For example, Mastercard lists a separate US Mastercard Black Card with an online application route. Its terms, fee and benefits are not Centurion terms. Who may qualify for the Amex Centurion Card?
American Express Global Network Services’ October 2023 Business and Operational Policies Manual says Centurion acquisition should be invitation-only, using pre-approved applications for selected customers. Its target groups include existing American Express cardmembers with an annual spend history of USD 150,000 (or a local socioeconomic equivalent), and/or premium bank customers whose financial portfolio supports a USD 150,000 credit line (or local equivalent). The manual’s section 3.3.4 describes issuer policy, not a guaranteed personal threshold.

Those figures are not a public promise that spending USD 150,000 or holding assets sufficient for a comparable credit line will produce an invitation. The manual addresses licensed issuers’ acquisition practices; it also sets issuer-side prerequisites, including issuing The Platinum Card, meeting contractual performance levels and maintaining a sizable Platinum Card base in the market. It is therefore not an individual application checklist.
Does Amex publish a Centurion qualification formula?
No specific Centurion scoring formula or universal spend threshold is established in the cited official material. American Express’s general US application FAQ says decisions consider multiple factors, including information supplied on an application and information from credit bureaus, and that an outcome is determined after an application has been received and processed. That general explanation is not a Centurion invitation formula. Read the Amex US application-eligibility FAQ.

The available official sources also do not establish a reliable figure for how many people hold Centurion, how many invitations are issued, or what personal spending level guarantees one. Claims about a fixed threshold should be treated cautiously unless American Express confirms them for the relevant market and product.

- Acquisition route: Is the product invitation-only, or does the issuer provide an application route?
- Issuer and market: Which institution issues it, and for which country or region are the terms written?
- Costs: What annual fee and other charges apply to that specific product?
- Benefits and limits: Which benefits are included, and what restrictions, enrollment requirements or guest rules apply?
- Evidence behind eligibility claims: Is the statement in official issuer policy, or is it an unverified estimate?
Benefits can also differ by card type and market. For instance, American Express’s consulted benefits page covers US Corporate Centurion; its lounge-entry and guest conditions should not be assumed to apply to every consumer Centurion account or every country. Check the Corporate Centurion benefits terms and the cardmember’s own agreement for applicable conditions.
