Encrypt a secondary drive with BitLocker if it holds sensitive files and someone could access the computer or drive while Windows is offline. First make sure the volume is eligible and that you can safely retrieve its recovery key. Encryption is a poor trade if losing that key would leave you without a dependable way to regain access.
What BitLocker protects—and what it does not
BitLocker is primarily protection against offline access: Microsoft describes it as helping prevent data stored on a Windows computer from being revealed when the operating system is offline. That makes it relevant if a computer or drive is lost, stolen, or accessed outside your logged-in Windows session. It is not a general fix for every security problem, and drive encryption alone does not protect files from someone who can access them through an already-unlocked Windows session. Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains its intended role.

Decide whether the added protection is worth it
Consider the consequences of exposure, how often the device leaves your control, and whether you can maintain a usable recovery path. Microsoft does not prescribe encryption for every secondary drive; the recommendation depends on your circumstances.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Data sensitivity: Personal, financial, work, customer, or otherwise confidential files make the case for encryption stronger.
- Exposure: A computer that travels, is shared, or could be stolen presents more offline-access risk than a device that stays in a physically controlled location.
- Recovery readiness: Know where the recovery key will be stored and how you will retrieve it before enabling protection.
- Convenience: Decide whether you expect the drive to unlock automatically, and whether your Windows operating-system drive is also protected.
- Portability: If you may move the drive to another computer, make sure you will have a way to unlock it there.
If the drive holds nothing whose exposure would matter and remains under reliable physical control, encryption may add little practical value. If you cannot arrange a reliable recovery-key location, solve that problem before turning protection on.

Check that the volume is eligible
Microsoft says Windows can protect internal fixed data drives, but a particular volume may not offer BitLocker controls. Its FAQ lists possible causes including insufficient size, an incompatible file system, a dynamic disk, or a system partition. If the option is unavailable, do not assume the drive is broken or that every edition and device exposes identical controls; check the volume configuration and the Windows or organization policies that apply. Microsoft’s BitLocker FAQ describes fixed-drive support and these eligibility issues.
Choose how the drive will unlock
Automatic unlock on this PC
Automatic unlock can make a fixed data drive more convenient, but Microsoft requires the operating-system drive to be protected by BitLocker too. If the OS drive is not protected, the fixed data drive cannot use automatic unlock. Consider whether you prefer this convenience or want a separate unlock step for the secondary volume. Microsoft’s FAQ documents the prerequisite.

Using the drive on another computer
A data drive protected with a password or smart card can be unlocked on another computer. A drive configured for automatic unlock only needs its recovery key when used elsewhere, according to Microsoft. If you expect to move the drive, do not rely on automatic unlock as your only practical access method; confirm you can use the appropriate unlock method or retrieve the recovery key. Microsoft’s key-management FAQ addresses this case.

The recovery key is essential if normal unlocking fails. Microsoft lists USB storage, a printed copy, Microsoft Entra ID, and Active Directory Domain Services among possible recovery-material destinations; which options are available depends on how the device is managed. A USB flash drive is one option, not a requirement to encrypt a fixed data drive.

Keep a personal recovery copy separate from the computer and encrypted volume. Microsoft warns that keeping a device and its recovery items in the same bag makes unauthorized access easier. Treat the key as sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to unlock the protected drive. For organization-managed computers, confirm with the administrator how recovery material is stored and retrieved. Microsoft’s recovery guidance covers storage choices and safe handling.

There is no general performance figure established here for secondary-drive workloads. The impact can depend on the drive, hardware, and workload, so avoid assuming a specific speed change. Also verify that the recovery key is accessible before relying on the encrypted volume for important files. If you later move the drive, use its configured password or smart-card method, or retrieve the recovery key if it was set to automatic unlock only.
