Bitdefender announced the public beta of AI Guardian on September 30, 2026. It is a macOS security layer designed to check actions taken by supported autonomous agents against a policy baseline, then allow, flag, or block them. The beta is free, but compatibility is limited to specific integrations—not every agent that runs on a Mac.
What AI Guardian does—and what it does not do
AI Guardian is designed to sit between an agent and actions such as using tools, accessing files, or handling credentials. Bitdefender says users can set rules for permitted tools, files, and actions; the product then checks attempted actions in real time and records decisions in an audit log. Its stated protections include prompt-injection detection, MCP tool inspection, skill vetting, sensitive-file and credential protection, and policy monitoring. These are Bitdefender’s descriptions of the product’s capabilities, not results from an independent efficacy assessment.

It is not a general antivirus, network firewall or VPN, replacement for an agent framework or large language model, or filter that judges whether a chatbot’s answers are accurate or appropriate. Its focus is controlling agent actions, rather than securing every aspect of a computer or improving an AI model’s output.

- Allowed: The action meets the configured policy and can proceed.
- Flagged: The action is surfaced for review rather than automatically stopped.
- Blocked: The action is stopped before it proceeds.
Bitdefender describes an auditable record of decisions, giving users a way to review what the agent attempted and how the policy handled it.

Availability and supported agents
At launch, Bitdefender said AI Guardian was available for macOS, initially in English, and free throughout the public beta. The current product page lists Claude Code 2.1.121 or later and OpenClaw 2026.6.6 or later as supported. It describes IDE-embedded agents as coming later and Windows and Linux support as planned, not currently supported. Availability can change during the beta; check the official AI Guardian page for the latest status.
Compatibility is integrated agent by agent through a plugin or hook, so having a Mac does not make every agent compatible. During beta, AI Guardian ships with Bitdefender’s macOS agent and is operated using the aiguardian command-line tool. Bitdefender’s beta documentation warns that commands and screens may change before general availability.

How prompt injection and MCP tool poisoning fit in
Prompt injection is an attempt to steer an AI agent by placing malicious or misleading instructions in content it encounters. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, lets agents connect to external tools and services; tool poisoning involves manipulating a tool or its description to influence an agent’s behavior. Bitdefender says AI Guardian checks prompts and inspects MCP tools, but the announcement does not establish how often it detects or prevents attacks in real-world use.

The MCPTox paper authors reported 1,348 malicious test cases across 20 prominent LLM agents, built around 45 live MCP servers and 353 authentic tools. In that benchmark, o1-mini had a 72.8% attack success rate. That figure applies to that model in the MCPTox evaluation; it is not an average for all agents or a measurement of AI Guardian.

Credential exposure is another concern for agent workflows. GitGuardian’s The State of Secrets Sprawl 2026 reported 1,275,105 AI-service secrets exposed in 2025, an 81% year-over-year increase. It also identified 24,008 unique secrets in MCP-related configuration files on public GitHub, including 2,117 unique valid credentials. These are ecosystem figures, not evidence of AI Guardian’s detection or prevention rate.
Privacy: local processing and beta telemetry
Bitdefender says prompt analysis runs on the device and prompt text does not leave it. Its beta documentation also says policy checks, skill scans, and decisions run locally, and that the audit log is encrypted on the user’s Mac. Those assurances do not mean that no data leaves the device: Bitdefender says selected checks, such as URL reputation, use its cloud services.

There is also a separate beta telemetry setting to understand. According to the documentation, anonymous protection-decision reporting is enabled on every beta installation and cannot be turned off in that build. The reporting covers decisions and scanner activity, and the documentation says it excludes prompt contents, file contents, credentials, and content processed by agents. Review Bitdefender’s current documentation if these data-handling details are important to your workflow, since beta behavior may change.

Who should consider the beta?
AI Guardian may be relevant to developers and other technical users who run supported agents on macOS and want policy checks around tool use, file access, or credentials. Before relying on it, confirm that your exact agent and version are listed, check whether its controls match your workflow, and decide whether the beta’s reporting and changing interface are acceptable.

Bitdefender’s release does not establish independent testing of AI Guardian itself, and no security product guarantees complete protection. Bitdefender says effectiveness depends on configuration, runtime environment, and agent type. For a sensitive workflow, treat the product as an additional control—not a reason to grant an agent broader access than it needs.
