Bitcoin and U.S. Treasury bills are fundamentally different investments. A Treasury bill has a short, defined term and pays its face value at maturity; Bitcoin has no maturity payment, and its value depends on the market price when you sell. Bills offer more predictable nominal proceeds if held to maturity, while Bitcoin exposes you to potentially large price swings. Neither comparison nor past performance establishes which will outperform.
Bitcoin vs. Treasury bills: how they work
| Feature | Treasury bills | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | A short-term, marketable U.S. government security. | A crypto asset whose market price changes. |
| Term or maturity | Matures in one year or less. TreasuryDirect lists regular terms from four weeks to 52 weeks. | No contractual maturity date or maturity payment. |
| How return is determined | Bills are sold at a discount or at par and pay face value at maturity; the difference between the purchase price and face value is the interest earned. The return is set at auction, so buyers do not know the rate before the auction. | Return depends on the price when you buy and sell, less any applicable fees and taxes. |
| Value at a planned exit | If held to maturity, the bill pays its face value. If sold early, its market price may be more or less than the amount due at maturity. | Sale proceeds are unknown in advance and may be substantially above or below the purchase price. |
These mechanics are described by TreasuryDirect’s Treasury bills overview and its information on bill terms and purchase pricing. TreasuryDirect explains that a marketable security can be transferred or sold before maturity in its marketable securities overview.

Are Treasury bills safer than Bitcoin?
For someone prioritizing a defined nominal payment on a known date, a bill held to maturity is more predictable: its face-value payment is established, although the interest rate is determined at auction. Bitcoin has no equivalent payment promise, and its market price can fall sharply. The SEC describes Bitcoin as highly speculative and historically volatile. That makes Bitcoin exposed to market-price risk in a way that differs from holding a bill to maturity.
“Safer” depends on what risk matters to you. A bill sold before maturity can fetch less than its face value, while a Bitcoin holder can face sharp price declines, custody problems, or difficulty executing a sale on favorable terms. The SEC’s investor bulletin warns: “The risk of loss for individual investors who participate in transactions involving crypto assets, including crypto asset securities, remains significant.” See the SEC investor bulletins for context.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Which has better returns, Bitcoin or T-bills?
There is no answer without specifying a common measurement period and the exact way each return is calculated. An auction discount rate for a bill is not directly comparable to a Bitcoin price change. For a fair comparison, identify the bill’s term, auction or purchase date, yield convention, and whether it was held to maturity. For Bitcoin, use exact start and end dates and say whether fees and taxes are included. Compare both over the same horizon.
A bill held to maturity has a known face-value payment; Bitcoin’s future sale price is not known in advance. A comparison over one date range can produce a different result over another, so a past result is not a forecast. The available figures do not establish a matched-period total-return winner for Bitcoin and Treasury bills.

Liquidity: can I sell a Treasury bill before it matures?
Yes. Treasury bills are marketable securities and can be sold before maturity. TreasuryDirect defines “marketable” to mean that a security can be transferred to someone else or sold before the end of its term. If you sell early, the price may differ from the amount due at maturity, so the ability to sell does not guarantee a particular value.
Bitcoin can also be traded, but the ability to sell and the price you receive depend on market conditions and the venue you use. The available sources do not provide a directly comparable measure of market depth or execution costs for Bitcoin and bills. The Treasury describes the Treasury securities market generally as the world’s largest and most liquid securities market, while noting that liquidity differs by instrument; that broad description is not a guarantee that every bill sale is frictionless or a head-to-head comparison with Bitcoin. See the Treasury regulation’s market-liquidity discussion.

Bitcoin custody adds a separate risk
A wallet does not store Bitcoin itself; it manages the private keys needed to access and control it. Losing access credentials can mean losing access to the assets. A cold wallet is typically a physical device less exposed to internet threats, but it can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. Using a third-party custodian avoids some self-management responsibilities but introduces provider-failure and access risks. A hardware wallet does not reduce Bitcoin’s price volatility.
The SEC explains these custody considerations in its crypto asset investor materials. Whichever custody approach you consider, account for who controls the keys, how access is recovered, and what happens if the device or service becomes unavailable.

Taxes and practical decision factors
TreasuryDirect says interest on Treasury bills is federally taxable and exempt from state and local taxes. The available sources do not establish Bitcoin’s tax treatment, so do not assume it is the same. Check current tax rules for your circumstances.
- Cash timing: Match a bill’s maturity to when you expect to need the money. Selling early adds price uncertainty.
- Price fluctuations: Consider whether you can tolerate Bitcoin’s market volatility and the possibility of a substantial loss.
- Access and costs: Check the trading venue, spreads, fees, and any practical constraints on buying or selling either asset.
- Custody: For Bitcoin, decide whether managing private keys yourself or relying on a third party fits your needs and risk tolerance.
- Return comparison: Use the same holding period and state whether figures include fees and taxes.
