Compare battery-life claims only when listening conditions are similar, read the full IP rating alongside the manufacturer’s test limits, and verify codec support on both the speaker and the device that will play audio. A Bluetooth version number by itself does not tell you which music codecs a speaker supports or prove that it supports LE Audio.
How to compare battery-life claims
An advertised runtime is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed number of hours. Volume, music, equalizer settings, temperature, battery modes and charging another device can all affect how long a speaker lasts. Treat “up to” figures as useful for screening products, not as results from a controlled comparison.

Check the conditions behind the number
Bose lists 12 hours at moderate volume for the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), and says runtime is shorter at maximum volume. Its estimate is based on Bluetooth A2DP audio at 50% volume, 68–77°F (20–25°C), default EQ, a mix of Top 50 Global tracks as of February 2024, and no charging of external devices. Bose’s specifications make those conditions clearer than a bare hours figure.
JBL lists up to 14 hours of music playback for the Flip 7, with runtime dependent on volume and audio content. Its product page separately advertises up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost. Keep that feature attached to the higher figure when comparing claims; the two numbers describe different conditions, not a single guaranteed runtime. The Flip 7 specification sheet lists a 2.5-hour charging time at 5V/3A. JBL’s Flip 7 page and specifications provide the claims.

For a fairer comparison, look for the expected playback volume and any named battery mode, then consider whether your use includes cold or hot conditions, EQ changes or phone charging. If manufacturers do not publish comparable test conditions, treat the figures as separate estimates rather than ranking one speaker as objectively longer-lasting.
What an IP water-resistance rating tells you
Use the complete IP classification, not the loose word “waterproof.” The official product pages list the JBL Flip 7 as IP68 and the Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) as IP67. Those labels alone do not provide a like-for-like immersion comparison: the reviewed product pages do not give matching water depths and durations.

Before relying on a speaker around a pool, at the beach or for any use involving submersion, check the manufacturer’s manual or product documentation for the specific test limits and exclusions. Do not assume the shorthand rating means unlimited underwater use or establishes protection against saltwater. The cited pages do not substantiate those broader claims.
Which Bluetooth codecs matter?
A codec encodes and decodes the audio stream. For a Bluetooth connection, the transmitting device and speaker need compatible support for the codec and connection mode you intend to use. If codec support is essential, check both devices’ documentation rather than relying on a Bluetooth version number.

Bluetooth LE Audio is distinct from Bluetooth Classic Audio. The Bluetooth SIG says LE Audio uses the LC3 codec and adds features including Auracast broadcast audio. Its FAQ says the LE Isochronous Channels feature used by LE Audio was introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2; that does not mean every device with Bluetooth 5.2 or later supports LE Audio. Look for explicit LE Audio and codec support on the product specifications.
The Bluetooth SIG quotes Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS, describing listening tests in which “LC3 will provide improvements in audio quality over the SBC codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate.” That is a reported codec comparison, not a product-specific battery test. The SIG also explains that developers may trade codec efficiency among audio quality, power use, battery life and device size; actual results depend on implementation and use. Its discussion of up to double battery life describes a possible design choice for developers seeking the same audio quality, not a guaranteed gain for a particular speaker. Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio overview and LE Audio FAQ explain the distinction.

For casual streaming, codec names may matter less day to day than runtime at your usual volume, protection suited to your setting, size and controls. Also distinguish connection types: JBL promotes lossless USB-C playback on the Flip 7, but that does not establish which codecs it supports over Bluetooth.
Official specifications compared

|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Flip 7 | Up to 14 hours, depending on volume and audio content; the product page separately says up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost. | IP68 | The page mentions lossless USB-C playback; a Bluetooth music-codec list is not stated. |
| Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) | 12 hours at moderate volume, with less runtime at maximum. Bose describes a 50% volume estimate and other test conditions. | IP67 | Bose lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the A2DP profile; supported music codecs are not stated in the cited specification excerpt. |

Quick Recap
A practical checklist before buying
- Compare battery estimates at similar volume and operating conditions; note special modes such as Playtime Boost.
- Check charging time and whether you expect to charge another device from the speaker.
- Match the full IP classification and documented test limits to your use, especially for submersion or saltwater exposure.
- If a codec is important, confirm explicit support on both the speaker and source device for the connection mode you will use.
- Consider size and portability, plus any multi-speaker, app or connection features you will actually use.
- Mark missing specifications as unknown rather than inferring them from a Bluetooth version or a feature for another connection type.
