Bitcoin is designed primarily as peer-to-peer digital money; Ethereum is a programmable blockchain for smart contracts and decentralized applications that also transfers value. Their different purposes shape how they reach agreement, use their native assets, handle supply, and establish settlement confidence. Neither is categorically better: the relevant choice depends on what you need a network to do.
Bitcoin and Ethereum at a glance
| Dimension | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Peer-to-peer digital currency | Smart-contract and decentralized-application platform that also transfers value |
| Native asset | Bitcoin (BTC) | Ether (ETH), used to pay fees and support proof-of-stake security |
| Consensus | Proof of work: miners use computational resources to propose blocks | Proof of stake: validators stake ETH to participate in block proposal and validation |
| Supply design | Protocol limit of 21 million BTC | No fixed maximum; issuance and transaction burns affect supply |
| Settlement confidence | Grows as additional blocks confirm a transaction | Proof-of-stake finality; Ethereum.org describes typical finality as around 15 minutes |
| Energy model | Mining consumes energy to perform proof of work | Proof of stake uses substantially less energy than Ethereum’s former proof-of-work system |

What are Bitcoin and Ethereum designed to do?
Bitcoin focuses on digital money
Bitcoin’s central purpose is peer-to-peer digital currency: people can transfer BTC on the Bitcoin network without relying on a central payment operator. Bitcoin transactions use scripts, but the network is not principally organized as a general-purpose application platform.

Ethereum also supports transfers of value, but its defining capability is running smart contracts: programs deployed to the blockchain that can execute according to their code. Developers use them to build decentralized applications. ETH is used to pay for network activity and is also staked to help secure Ethereum.

For a general comparison, the useful distinction is emphasis: Bitcoin prioritizes digital currency, while Ethereum makes programmable applications a core network function. Ethereum.org’s Bitcoin and Ethereum comparison outlines these roles.
How do their security and consensus systems differ?
Bitcoin: proof of work
Bitcoin miners expend computational resources to compete to propose blocks. This proof-of-work process makes block production costly and is part of the network’s security model. A transaction’s confirmation confidence increases as more blocks are added after the block containing it.

Ethereum: proof of stake
Ethereum validators stake ETH and participate in proposing and validating blocks. Under the protocol, specified misconduct can result in a validator losing some stake. Ethereum’s transition from proof of work to proof of stake was specified in EIP-3675.
Proof of stake changes the resources and incentives used to secure the chain; it does not mean security trade-offs disappear. Ethereum’s documentation notes the system’s relative complexity and shorter operating history compared with proof of work. See Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake explanation for its mechanism and qualifications.

How do BTC and ETH supply rules compare?
Bitcoin has a stated supply limit
Bitcoin’s protocol sets a maximum supply of 21 million BTC. This is a protocol rule, not a claim about how much BTC is currently circulating or held by any particular group.
Ethereum has no fixed supply cap
Ethereum has no fixed maximum supply. The protocol issues ETH rewards to validators, while transaction activity burns ETH. As a result, ETH supply can increase or decrease depending on the balance between issuance and burning; describing it as having a fixed cap would be inaccurate.

The contrast is between a defined maximum in Bitcoin’s protocol and a variable supply mechanism on Ethereum—not between a guaranteed scarcity outcome and guaranteed inflation. Ethereum.org summarizes the supply distinction in its network comparison.

What does transaction finality mean on each network?
Bitcoin confirmations build confidence over time
Bitcoin does not provide a fixed finality guarantee in the same way Ethereum’s proof-of-stake protocol does. Each additional block after a transaction’s block adds confirmation and makes reversal less likely, so users often assess settlement by the number of confirmations appropriate to their situation.

Ethereum uses proof-of-stake finality
Ethereum’s protocol documentation describes 12-second slots and 32-slot epochs; its comparison guide characterizes finality as typically around 15 minutes. These are protocol-level descriptions, not a promise that every transaction will appear settled to a wallet, exchange, merchant, or user within that time. Services may apply their own confirmation and settlement policies. The timing units are described in Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake documentation.
Which network uses more energy?
Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mining consumes energy as miners perform computation to propose blocks. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus does not rely on that mining competition. Ethereum.org estimates that Ethereum’s move from proof of work reduced its energy expenditure by approximately 99.98%; this is the organization’s estimate, not an independent measurement reproduced here. The figure concerns Ethereum’s change from its former consensus system, not a universal measure proving that one network is safer or better. Details and qualifications appear in Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake versus proof-of-work comparison and its proof-of-stake FAQ.
Which is better: Bitcoin or Ethereum?
There is no single technical winner because the networks prioritize different uses. Bitcoin is the more direct fit if the defining requirement is a peer-to-peer digital currency with a protocol supply limit. Ethereum is the more direct fit when the requirement is a blockchain that supports general-purpose smart contracts and decentralized applications. For security, settlement, and energy, compare the mechanisms and trade-offs above rather than treating any one statistic as a complete verdict.
