Bitcoin fell to $80,350 on Bitstamp before recovering to around $82,500 on Friday, October 9, 2026, as a report cited $1.09 billion in crypto liquidations over a 24-hour period and 55,600 BTC sent to exchanges at a loss by short-term holders. These are three distinct signals: forced closures of leveraged positions, a reported price move, and on-chain transfers that do not prove the coins were sold.
What happened on October 9
Cointelegraph reported that Bitcoin touched $80,350 on Bitstamp, its lowest price since September 18, then recovered to around $82,500 on Friday. These are prices from the reported episode, not current quotes. Cointelegraph’s October 9 report attributed the liquidation figures to CoinGlass and the exchange-flow figure to CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha.

What the liquidation figures measure
CoinGlass was credited with $1.09 billion in total crypto liquidations during the 24 hours ending at 10:00 UTC Friday. Cointelegraph said $1.05 billion of Thursday’s total consisted of long liquidations. Those figures refer to crypto positions forcibly closed in the stated reporting windows; they are not measures of Bitcoin transfers or proof that holders sold spot BTC.
What the 55,600 BTC transfer figure means
CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha was credited with reporting that short-term holders sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday. In Cointelegraph’s description, short-term holders are entities that have held Bitcoin for up to six months without selling. A transfer was counted as being at a loss when the coins arrived at an exchange at a lower price than their previous transaction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
An exchange deposit is not the same as a completed sale. Cointelegraph noted that account holders may not have sold every coin transferred; a KuCoin republication of the report makes the same point. The reported flow therefore indicates coins moving to exchanges under the stated cost comparison, not that all 55,600 BTC were sold or that the flow alone predicts Bitcoin’s next move.
Why these are different market signals
| Signal | What was reported | What it can and cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Leveraged liquidations | $1.09 billion in crypto liquidations over the 24 hours ending at 10:00 UTC Friday; $1.05 billion in long liquidations for Thursday, attributed to CoinGlass by Cointelegraph. | Measures positions forcibly closed. It is not a count of spot BTC sent to exchanges. |
| Short-term-holder exchange transfers | 55,600 BTC sent to exchanges at a loss on Thursday, attributed to CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha by Cointelegraph. | Measures reported on-chain transfers under a cost-basis comparison. It does not establish that all transferred BTC was sold. |
| Price movement | BTC touched $80,350 on Bitstamp and later recovered to around $82,500, according to Cointelegraph. | Describes prices during the episode; it is not by itself a forecast or a confirmed technical support break. |
The liquidation total and transfer figure should not be added together: they measure different activities, use different attribution, and cover different windows. The report’s discussion of loss-driven selling as possible capitulation, and of conditions that might precede a recovery, is an interpretation rather than a guaranteed outcome.

How to read the $82,500 level
Cointelegraph quoted trader and analyst Rekt Capital saying: “Bitcoin is currently failing its retest of ~$82500. Weekly Close below $82500 and turn it into resistance however and Bitcoin will be back in its Macro Accumulation Range.” The statement is conditional: it hinges on a weekly close below the level and that level then acting as resistance. It is not confirmation that support had already failed, nor a prediction that the condition would occur.

The October 9 figures were reported by Cointelegraph, which attributed them to CoinGlass and CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha; they are not independently verified original datasets here. KuCoin’s republication is not separate confirmation of those underlying measurements. The report also quoted Taha saying Bitcoin was trading above $81,000, compared with $59,300 in June, a difference exceeding 36%; that is his stated comparison, not an additional measure of the liquidation or exchange-transfer activity.

Cointelegraph described its article as informational and not investment advice. The reported liquidation, transfer and price figures explain the episode but do not, on their own, establish what Bitcoin will do next.
