Bitcoin failed to hold a move above $87,000 in the market snapshots reported on October 5–6, 2026, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at records on October 6. The contrast is clear, but the timing and available reporting do not show that stock gains caused Bitcoin’s pullback.
What happened to Bitcoin near $87,000?
CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin briefly rose to just below $86,950 in its Monday, October 5 Asian-morning snapshot, then fell back to just under $86,000. The outlet said the late-September high was near $87,400. In a Tuesday, October 6 Asian-morning snapshot, Bitcoin was about $85,600, down roughly 1.2%, after sellers turned it back from a move above $87,000. These are time-specific reports, not daily closing prices. CoinDesk’s October 6 report counted three rejections at that level since September 23.

That makes $87,000 a market-observed resistance area in this coverage, not a fixed ceiling. CoinDesk’s interpretation was that holding above it would indicate selling pressure had been absorbed; it is not a guarantee that a breakout would follow.

The comparison is between an Asian-hours Bitcoin snapshot and U.S. closing index data, not matching closing prices. The figures show Bitcoin retreating as major U.S. indexes advanced; they do not establish a direct relationship between the moves.
What may be shaping the contrast?
CoinDesk’s October 5 coverage linked Bitcoin’s rise above $86,000 to softer U.S. jobs data and reduced pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep raising rates. It also noted that the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield remained near its highest level since 2002. In its October 6 account, CoinDesk cited a yield of 5.32% in that report’s time context; it was not identified as a closing yield. These are the outlet’s descriptions of the backdrop, not proof that jobs data or rates caused Bitcoin’s reversals. CoinDesk’s October 5 account provides the earlier price context.

CoinDesk quoted FxPro analyst Alex Kuptsikevich describing “a trend of higher local lows,” while noting that buyers had not gained momentum. He also said Bitcoin was approaching the apex of a pattern formed by horizontal resistance and rising support, which he associated with the possibility of increased volatility if price broke out. That is an analyst’s technical interpretation, not a validated forecast or trading recommendation.

What to watch next
- Whether Bitcoin can stay above $87,000: A sustained hold would be different from briefly trading above the level and then reversing.
- Whether the pattern changes: The cited analyst’s view points to a possible volatility increase around a breakout, but does not establish its direction.
- Comparable timestamps: Bitcoin trades continuously, while the stock figures above are U.S. closing data. Comparing like-for-like windows matters when judging whether the markets are moving together.
- Rates and economic data: CoinDesk identified jobs data and Treasury yields as relevant context. Their influence on subsequent prices cannot be inferred from these snapshots alone.
