Its transactions are public, wallet security depends on who controls the keys, and U.S. federal tax rules can apply when you sell or otherwise dispose of bitcoin. Here is what to know about volatility, fees and confirmations, taxes, privacy, and wallet choices.
How risky is Bitcoin, and why does its price change?
Bitcoin’s price can rise or fall unpredictably over short periods. Bitcoin.org identifies its economy, evolving adoption, and sometimes illiquid markets as factors that can contribute to price changes. It describes Bitcoin as a high-risk asset and advises against storing money in it that you cannot afford to lose.

That risk means Bitcoin may not be suitable for money you need to spend soon or cannot afford to lose. The available guidance does not establish a single measured volatility figure, and a past price move would not predict what happens next.

An on-chain Bitcoin payment is not instantly final. Each confirmation makes reversal increasingly difficult, but confirmation is not guaranteed at a precise time. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added about every 10 minutes on average; block discovery is probabilistic, so there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum wait. A fee below the level the network is prioritizing can delay confirmation considerably.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Fees depend on demand for blockchain space and the transaction’s data size, not simply on how much bitcoin is being sent. A transaction that combines multiple previous outputs or uses multisignature can require more space—and therefore a higher fee—than a simpler transaction. The fee at any given moment changes with network conditions.
On-chain Bitcoin or Lightning?
| Option | Settlement layer | Speed and cost | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-chain | Recorded directly on the Bitcoin blockchain | Waits for block confirmation; fee varies with demand and transaction size | Bitcoin.org describes it as standard for larger transfers and long-term storage |
| Lightning | Payment channels that settle back to the Bitcoin blockchain | Bitcoin.org describes payments as near-instant and typically costing less than a cent; this is a general description, not a live fee guarantee | Small, frequent payments, according to Bitcoin.org |
Do Bitcoin transactions have tax consequences?
For U.S. federal income tax purposes, the IRS treats Bitcoin and other digital assets as property. Selling bitcoin for U.S. dollars generally requires recognizing a capital gain or loss; limits may apply to deducting capital losses. An exchange or other disposition can also have tax consequences. Tax rules differ outside the United States and can change by tax year.

The IRS’s digital-asset question on a U.S. return is not simply a question about whether you own bitcoin. Under the IRS guidance, a taxpayer generally answers “No” if they only held digital assets or bought them with real currency and had no other digital-asset transaction. Receiving bitcoin as payment or a reward, selling or exchanging it, trading it for goods or services, or paying a transfer fee in digital assets can make the answer “Yes.” The exact answer depends on the relevant tax-year instructions and the person’s circumstances.
The IRS separates its FAQ treatment by transaction date: transactions before January 1, 2025 are generally addressed by its earlier virtual-currency FAQs, while its newer digital-asset FAQ section addresses transactions on or after that date. Basis and unit-identification rules can depend on timing; for example, the rules for identifying units in a broker-held account can differ between transactions during 2025 and those after December 31, 2025. Consult the IRS instructions for the return year rather than assuming one rule applies to every transaction.

What records should you keep?
The IRS advises keeping records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions, including fair market values and basis information. The forms required depend on the transaction. Organized records help establish what you acquired, what it cost, and what happened when you later disposed of it.
Are Bitcoin transactions private or reversible?
Bitcoin is not anonymous. Bitcoin.org says transactions are stored publicly and permanently on the network; anyone can see the balance and transaction history associated with an address. An address does not automatically display its owner’s real-world identity, but activity can become linked to a person if identifying information is disclosed or connected to that address.

A confirmed payment cannot simply be canceled by the sender. Bitcoin.org puts it this way: “A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, it can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.” Check the address and payment details before sending; recovering a mistaken payment depends on the recipient returning it.

Which Bitcoin wallet should you use?
The central trade-off is who controls the private keys and who is responsible for recovery. A custodian holds or safeguards funds on the user’s behalf, while self-custody puts key control and backup responsibility with the owner.

| Wallet approach | Who controls the keys? | Main reliance or responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial | The service safeguards the funds | You depend on the company to protect funds and honor withdrawals |
| Self-custody | You control the private keys | You must protect the keys and backups; lost funds may be unrecoverable |
A hardware wallet is an optional self-custody tool that keeps keys offline and connects to a computer when funds need to be managed. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as one of the most secure storage methods and suitable for larger amounts, but losing the device without a proper backup can make funds unrecoverable. Offline storage does not eliminate the need to protect recovery information.
Quick Recap
What should you check before sending or storing bitcoin?
- Before a payment: Verify the recipient and transaction details; the sender cannot reverse a completed transaction on their own.
- Before relying on a confirmation time: Treat the roughly 10-minute block interval as an average, not a deadline, and remember that fees and network demand affect delays.
- Before choosing a wallet: Decide whether you prefer a company to safeguard funds or are prepared to protect private keys and backups yourself.
- Before filing a U.S. return: Review the IRS guidance for the correct tax year and keep records of acquisition cost, fair market value, and each disposition.
