Buying Bitcoin directly is a better fit if you want control over the Bitcoin itself or the ability to transfer it to a wallet. Neither route removes Bitcoin’s volatility, and neither is universally right: compare the actual fees, custody arrangements, and risks before choosing.
What you own—and what you can do with it
With a spot Bitcoin ETP, you own shares or units in a product designed to provide exposure to Bitcoin. You do not personally hold the underlying Bitcoin in a wallet, and owning the product does not give you the same ability to control or transfer Bitcoin. The product’s legal structure varies, so read its prospectus rather than assuming every product called a Bitcoin ETF is structured the same way.

Fidelity says FBTC’s performance will not reflect the specific return an investor would realize by buying Bitcoin directly. That distinction matters: an ETP is an investment security or trust interest linked to Bitcoin, not a substitute for having Bitcoin available for wallet transfers or on-chain use. The SEC’s investor bulletin on crypto ETPs explains the product category and its risks.
When you buy Bitcoin directly, you acquire the crypto asset through a platform or wallet arrangement. You may control it yourself in a wallet, or use a third-party platform or custodian to hold it. Direct ownership can offer wallet-level control and transfer options, subject to the platform, custody setup, and network arrangements.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Why people say “ETF”—and why the legal structure matters
“Bitcoin ETF” is common shorthand, but “spot Bitcoin ETP” is often more precise. The SEC notes that spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs may use “ETF” in their names or be called ETFs in public discussion even when the term does not precisely describe their structure. For example, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust states that it is not an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940.
Check the specific product’s legal name and prospectus for its structure, custody arrangements, and risks. SEC approval of listing and trading is not an endorsement of Bitcoin or a guarantee that a product is safe. In January 2024, then SEC Chair Gary Gensler wrote, “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” Read the SEC statement.

How the responsibilities differ
| Consideration | Spot Bitcoin ETP | Bitcoin bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Brokerage account and exchange-traded product; availability and eligibility vary. | Crypto platform or wallet arrangement; features and availability vary. |
| Custody and keys | The product’s service providers handle custody of underlying Bitcoin; you do not personally handle those Bitcoin keys. | You manage keys in self-custody or rely on an outside custodian, with different risks in each case. |
| Costs | Generally includes a sponsor fee, plus any brokerage trading costs. | May include platform transaction, spread, custody, transfer, setup, or closure fees. |
| Transfer and use | Owning shares or units is not the same as controlling Bitcoin for wallet transfers or on-chain use. | May permit wallet-level control and transfers, subject to your platform, custody, and network arrangements. |
| Additional risks | Bitcoin market volatility, tracking or expense effects, and product, sponsor, and custodian risks. | Bitcoin market volatility plus platform, custody, key-loss, and transaction risks. |
Fees: compare the full cost, not just the headline
The SEC says spot Bitcoin ETPs generally pay sponsor fees that direct holders do not. But that does not mean buying directly is automatically cheaper: a platform may charge transaction or spread costs, and custody, transfer, account setup, or closure fees may apply. The SEC advises investors to ask custodians about annual asset-based fees, transaction fees, transfer fees, and setup or closure charges. See the SEC’s crypto custody bulletin.
For an ETP, check the current prospectus for its sponsor fee and your brokerage’s fee schedule for trading costs. For direct purchases, check the platform’s current schedule, including any spread and custody charges. Costs depend on the provider and how you use the account; no route is cheaper in every case.

Wallet security is part of direct ownership
If you choose self-custody, protecting access and recovery information becomes your responsibility. The SEC advises investors to keep a wallet’s seed phrase secure and never share it. Losing recovery information can put access at risk, while exposing it can compromise the wallet. A hardware wallet is an optional physical cold-storage device—not a requirement or a guarantee of safety—and the device itself typically costs money. If you use a third-party custodian instead, understand its custody practices, fees, and recovery process.
Which route fits your priorities?
A spot Bitcoin ETP may suit you if
- You want Bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account.
- You prefer not to manage crypto-platform transactions or wallet keys yourself.
- You are comfortable holding a product that tracks Bitcoin exposure rather than controlling Bitcoin directly.
Buying Bitcoin directly may suit you if
- You want the option to control Bitcoin in your own wallet or transfer it.
- You are prepared to choose a platform or custody arrangement and understand its fees.
- You can take responsibility for key security and recovery, or carefully evaluate a third-party custodian.
These are practical distinctions, not a prediction about which route will perform better. The SEC urges investors to weigh the risks and benefits of products providing Bitcoin exposure. Issuer materials also describe spot crypto products as highly volatile and potentially illiquid. Both routes retain Bitcoin price risk; the ETP adds product and service-provider considerations, while direct ownership adds platform, custody, and key-management decisions.
