Build your energy budget from your household’s actual use and tariff, then leave room for changes in rates or consumption. A headline figure such as a “typical” bill is not a reliable forecast for your home: what you pay depends on the energy you use, your unit rates and standing charges, and your payment terms.
Start with your own bills and tariff
Gather two or three recent bills if you have them, plus meter readings where available. A longer history helps reveal seasonal changes—for example, higher heating use in colder months. If you have recently moved or changed tariff, use the information available and update your estimate as real bills arrive.

- Your tariff name and whether it is fixed or variable
- Electricity and gas unit rates, measured in pence per kilowatt-hour (kWh)
- Standing charges, usually listed as a daily amount for each fuel
- Your billing period and energy use in kWh
- Your payment method, payment dates, and any account credit or debt
Use actual meter readings when possible, and submit them as your supplier requests. Estimated readings can make it harder to distinguish real changes in consumption from billing estimates. If a bill looks wrong or arrives after a long delay, Ofgem provides guidance on what to do if you get a back bill.

Estimate the monthly cost in two parts
Separate the fixed cost of being connected from the cost of the energy you use. For each fuel, calculate the usage charge by multiplying the kWh used by the unit rate. Add the standing charge for each day in the billing period, then add the fuel totals together.

- REAL-TIME ENERGY DATA: REQUIRES 2.4 GHz WIFI WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION to monitor energy use with iPhone / Android / Web app. Vue sensors collect energy data and are accurate from ±2%. The Vue is UL and CE Listed for your safety. 1 second data is only available in the app (when actively open) and retained 3 hours. Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.
Estimated cost for a billing period = (electricity kWh × electricity unit rate) + (gas kWh × gas unit rate) + standing charges
For example, if a bill covers 30 days, include 30 days of each applicable standing charge. Use the units and rates shown on your bill, and keep VAT or other bill components in mind if your supplier’s displayed rates do not already include them. To create a monthly planning figure from an annual estimate, divide the estimated annual cost by 12; do not assume every month will cost the same in practice.
If your bill gives costs rather than kWh, check the underlying usage and rates before projecting forward. A change in price can affect the same usage differently, while a change in household routines can affect usage even if the tariff is unchanged.

Set an allowance and a workable buffer
Choose an amount your household can realistically set aside each month. Use the estimated cost as a starting point, not a promise that bills will match it. Where income allows, keep some headroom for colder weather, a rate change, extra time at home, or an unexpected billing adjustment. There is no single buffer that suits every income or household.
If you cannot save a buffer, make the budget useful in other ways: check readings and bills promptly, identify which other spending could flex if energy costs rise, and find out how to contact your supplier before a payment problem develops. Avoid setting an allowance so low that it merely postpones an unaffordable bill.
Understand what a price cap does—and does not—protect
In Great Britain, Ofgem’s default-tariff price cap limits unit rates and standing charges under its rules; it does not fix the total bill. A household using more energy can still pay more. The cap also applies to default tariffs, not every tariff in the market.

Ofgem’s February 2026 announcement said the cap for 1 April to 30 June 2026 was 7% lower, equivalent to £117 a year or around £10 a month for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. That was a period-specific figure and ended on 30 June 2026; it should not be treated as the rate in force now. Check Ofgem’s latest cap information and your supplier’s current rates when updating your budget: Ofgem’s price-cap information.
Policy changes can also affect bills, but published averages are not household guarantees. The UK government said an average £150 of costs was removed from household energy bills from April 2026; individual savings vary. Its December 2025 statement said that, from April 2026, 75% of domestic Renewables Obligation costs would be met by the Exchequer and the Energy Company Obligation would no longer be levied on bills in Great Britain. The government said it would work with the Northern Ireland Executive if it chose to develop a comparable offer. See the April 2026 bill changes and government statement on policy-cost changes for the applicable details.

- Unit rates: compare the price per kWh for each fuel against your household’s use.
- Standing charges: include these even in months when you use little energy.
- Payment method: check whether the quoted terms match how you pay.
- Fixed-term conditions: note the term, exit fees, and what happens when it ends.
- Usage pattern: consider when and how much energy your household uses, not just an assumed typical home.
A lower unit rate may not produce the lowest total cost for every household if its standing charge or terms differ. Compare the estimated yearly cost for your own usage and make sure you understand any conditions before switching.

GOV.UK’s cost-of-living support page covers energy bills and signposts information for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Some figures in the government’s Fuel Poverty Strategy apply to England only: it estimated that 9 million households, or 36.3%, spent more than 10% of income after housing costs on energy in 2024. The strategy estimated the Autumn 2025 Budget package would reduce that to 7.9 million households, or 32.0%.

The England strategy estimated an average household saving of £150 under the package, with the amount depending on consumption. Its examples ranged from £205 for a high-demand rural household with poor energy efficiency to more than £440 for a high-use electric storage-heated household. These are estimates, not promised savings for any particular home. Read the Fuel Poverty Strategy for England and check local government information for support where you live.
If the bill is becoming unaffordable, contact your supplier early
Do not wait for missed payments to pile up before asking for help. Contact your supplier, explain what you can afford, and ask what support or payment arrangement may be available. Keep a record of what you agree and check that any proposed amount fits your budget. Ofgem’s household energy advice outlines supplier support and other help routes. Ofgem’s consumer guidance, published 17 April 2024, states: “As energy prices continue to rise, many people will need extra support.”
Review the budget when something changes
Recalculate when your tariff or rates change, the price cap changes, you move home, seasonal use shifts, or household circumstances change. Compare actual bills and readings with the amount you set aside. If the gap is growing, check whether the cause is higher use, a higher rate, an estimated reading, or an account balance—and adjust the budget or seek help accordingly.
