The scenario assumes Bitcoin becomes more widely used in global trade and central-bank reserves; the firm’s own bear and bull cases range from $130,000 to $53.4 million.
What does VanEck’s $2.9 million scenario mean?
VanEck’s January 8, 2026 long-term capital-market assumptions analysis puts Bitcoin’s base-case value at $2.9 million per coin in 2050. The firm calculates that as a 15% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from an approximately $88,000 Bitcoin price on December 31, 2025. That date is the model’s reference point, not a current price. VanEck’s analysis is by Matthew Sigel, Head of Digital Assets Research, and Patrick Bush, Senior Investment Analyst, Digital Assets.

CAGR expresses an annualized rate over a period; it does not mean the asset is expected to rise by that amount every year. Over the 25 years from the end of 2025 to 2050, a 15% annualized rate applied to roughly $88,000 produces a value in the vicinity of $2.9 million. The calculation summarizes a hypothetical long-term path, not a forecast of year-to-year price movements.

VanEck’s 2026 summary ties its base case to Bitcoin achieving a role in both payments and official reserves: it assumes Bitcoin is used to settle 5–10% of global trade and makes up 2.5% of central-bank balance sheets. Those adoption levels are conditions built into the scenario, not evidence that adoption at those levels has occurred or will occur.

The firm’s earlier July 2024 explanation describes the valuation framework in more detail. It uses a velocity-of-money equation involving the GDP of domestic and international trade settled on Bitcoin, the actively circulating BTC supply and Bitcoin’s velocity—the rate at which circulating units are used in transactions. Its then-stated base assumptions included Bitcoin settling 10% of international trade and 5% of domestic trade; central banks holding 2.5% of assets in BTC; 85% of BTC being effectively removed from circulation; and velocity of about 1.5. These are inputs from the July 2024 version, not a confirmed list of updated 2026 inputs.
VanEck’s broader thesis in that earlier article is that Bitcoin could become an international medium of exchange and reserve asset, with emerging Bitcoin Layer 2 networks potentially helping address scalability barriers. That is the firm’s argument about how wider use might develop, not a demonstrated outcome.

The 2026 article presents three scenario outputs from VanEck Research, dated December 31, 2025. The “share of world financial assets” column is another measure attached to each scenario; it is not a probability that the corresponding price will occur.

The wide spread shows how sensitive a 2050 valuation is to assumptions about Bitcoin’s future role. VanEck does not assign probabilities to these outcomes in the figures presented, so the table should not be read as a range with a known likelihood or as a set of expected returns.

What the estimate does—and does not—establish
The 2026 article provides scenario values and selected adoption assumptions, while its 2024 predecessor lays out additional mechanics and inputs. Together they explain the broad logic of the exercise, but they do not provide a complete calculation that readers can independently reproduce for the 2026 target. In particular, the 2024 circulation and velocity inputs should not be silently treated as the 2026 model’s unchanged assumptions.
VanEck says the analysis and price targets are not financial advice, a call to action, a recommendation to buy or sell, or a projection of Bitcoin’s future performance. It also discloses that it may hold positions in the digital assets discussed. The 2024 explanation similarly cautions that actual future performance is unknown and may differ significantly from the illustrative scenarios. A long-range scenario is therefore best understood as a conditional illustration of what could follow if its assumptions hold, not as a basis for treating a particular 2050 price as assured.
