For a specific Bitcoin payment, search its transaction ID (txid) in Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space. Both are supported starting points for checking whether it is pending or confirmed. Choose based on the details you need and which interface you find clearer—not on an assumed speed or accuracy ranking.
What a Bitcoin block explorer can tell you
A block explorer is a search interface for information recorded on the public blockchain. Entering a txid lets you inspect a transaction without needing to be the person who sent it. Blockstream says its Explorer can display public transaction activity, including transactions that are not yours.

A transaction page can show its status, inputs and outputs, fee, fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB), and confirmation count. These fields help you see what was broadcast and whether a block has included it. They do not reveal a person’s legal identity simply because the transaction or address is publicly visible.

How to track a Bitcoin transaction
- Find the txid. Copy the transaction ID from the wallet or service that sent the payment. It is the most direct lookup for a particular transaction; an address search can return activity unrelated to that one payment.
- Open an explorer. Search the txid in Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space. Blockchain.com Explorer also supports searching hashes.
- Read the status and confirmations. If the transaction is in the mempool, it has not yet been included in a block. If it is confirmed, the page should show the confirmation count.
- Check the transaction details. Review the inputs, outputs, fee, and—where shown—fee rate. Compare the destination and amount with the payment details you expect.
- Refresh if it is still pending. Fee rates and mempool conditions change. A displayed fee rate or confirmation projection is a snapshot or estimate, not a promise of when a miner will include the transaction.
Why a Bitcoin transaction may be unconfirmed
“Unconfirmed” means the transaction remains in the mempool rather than being included in a block. Miners generally select higher-fee transactions sooner, but selection depends on changing conditions and an explorer cannot control it or guarantee an inclusion time. A mempool view can help explain the competition a pending transaction faces; it cannot tell you exactly when that transaction will confirm.
Check the transaction’s current status and fee information in the explorer, then consult the sending wallet or service for any transaction-specific options it supports. Do not treat a projected confirmation time as a deadline or certainty.

How many confirmations are enough?
A confirmation is counted when a block includes the transaction; each additional block adds another confirmation. Blockstream’s educational material describes six confirmations—roughly 60 minutes at an approximate ten-minute block interval—as a threshold many wallets and services treat as final. It also says one confirmation provides strong assurance for typical transactions. Those are general descriptions, not universal rules: the recipient’s policy, transaction value, and tolerance for risk determine what is acceptable.
Privacy and programmatic access
Bitcoin transaction data is public, but looking it up through a public website may disclose your query to that service. The sources reviewed do not establish a current, comparable logging policy for the public explorers, so do not assume a lookup is private. If that matters, a technically capable user can investigate running a node or self-hosting an explorer. The Esplora project documentation describes self-hosting as an option.

For repeated software queries, Blockstream documents a REST API with indexed blockchain data, including UTXO, balance, mempool, and fee information. Its API page advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA for the commercial API offer; that figure is a vendor guarantee, not independent performance research, and does not describe the free public explorer. Check the API’s current terms and limits before building against it.
