Bitcoin and Litecoin are proof-of-work cryptocurrencies, but their networks use different block schedules, supply limits, difficulty-adjustment intervals, and mining algorithms. Litecoin targets a new block about every 2.5 minutes; Bitcoin targets one about every 10 minutes. That difference can create more frequent chances for a transaction to be included in a block, but it does not guarantee a payment will settle four times faster.
How Bitcoin and Litecoin compare
| Protocol feature | Bitcoin | Litecoin |
|---|---|---|
| Proof-of-work algorithm | SHA-256 | Scrypt |
| Target block interval | About 10 minutes | About 2.5 minutes |
| Maximum supply | 21 million BTC | 84 million LTC |
| Difficulty adjustment | Every 2,016 blocks, about two weeks at the target interval | Every 504 blocks, about 3.5 days at the target interval |
| Reward-halving interval | About every four years by block schedule | Every 840,000 blocks, averaging about four years at the target interval |
These are protocol parameters, not measures of market value, current fees, adoption, or investment quality. The parameters are listed in Litecoin’s comparison and a 2025 SEC-hosted filing.

What block time means for payment speed
A block interval is the target cadence for miners to add blocks, not a countdown timer for each transaction. Transactions are broadcast to a network and may wait before a miner includes them. Once included in a block, a transaction has its first confirmation; additional confirmations may matter to the recipient depending on the transaction and its own policy.
Bitcoin.org says Bitcoin transactions usually receive a first confirmation in about 10 to 60 minutes, while noting that the process occurs through mining (How does Bitcoin work?). This is a usual range, not a guarantee. Litecoin’s shorter target interval means blocks are expected more frequently, but the sources here do not establish a directly comparable Litecoin confirmation-time distribution. Neither target lets you promise an exact transfer time.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Supply limits are not price comparisons
Bitcoin’s maximum supply is 21 million BTC and Litecoin’s is 84 million LTC. The larger number of Litecoin units does not by itself make LTC less valuable, cheaper to own, or a better purchase. A coin’s unit price and an asset’s overall market value are different questions, and both change over time.
Mining and reward schedules
Both networks use proof-of-work: miners compete to add blocks, and the protocol adjusts mining difficulty as conditions change. Bitcoin uses SHA-256; Litecoin uses Scrypt. The algorithms affect mining hardware and economics, so equipment or profitability should not be assumed to transfer between networks. The cited sources do not establish present-day profitability, relative security, or mining concentration.

Bitcoin adjusts difficulty every 2,016 blocks; Litecoin does so every 504 blocks. Those are block counts. The corresponding elapsed-time estimates—roughly two weeks and 3.5 days—assume blocks arrive at their target rates.
Both assets have scheduled reductions in block rewards. Litecoin’s reward halves every 840,000 blocks, an interval that averages about four years at its target block rate. The SEC-hosted 2025 filing reports that Litecoin’s reward was 6.25 LTC per block after the August 2023 halving; that is a dated filing statement, not a live network reading. The block schedule, rather than a fixed calendar appointment, determines when a halving occurs.

Fees and practical use
Fees depend on changing network conditions and transaction details. The available sources do not provide a matched, current BTC-versus-LTC fee comparison, so it would be misleading to say Litecoin is always cheaper. Check fee estimates for the network and wallet you plan to use when sending; estimates and the time a transaction takes can vary.
Whether either network suits a particular payment depends on the recipient’s requirements, confirmation policy, wallet support, and the transaction’s current fee and timing—not block interval alone. Neither a shorter target block time nor a larger supply cap establishes broader adoption or greater usefulness.

Wallets and holding keys
A wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions; the cryptocurrency itself is recorded on its blockchain. Bitcoin.org explains that private keys are used to sign transactions (How does Bitcoin work?). A hardware wallet is a dedicated signing device that works with wallet software, which can reduce exposure to a general-purpose computer while adding handling steps, as described in Bitcoin developer documentation.

For a device intended to hold both assets, verify that its manufacturer’s current compatibility list and the wallet software explicitly support both Bitcoin and Litecoin. Bitcoin-specific documentation alone does not establish Litecoin compatibility.

What the protocol differences do—and do not—tell you
The block interval, supply cap, difficulty cadence, and proof-of-work algorithm are concrete design differences. They do not settle which coin is safer, more widely used, more profitable to mine, or a better investment. Those conclusions require current, comparable evidence beyond protocol parameters. The technical labels “digital gold” and “digital silver” are market narratives, not protocol specifications.
