BIOS Update via USB: Which Method to Use and How to Do It Safely

A safe USB BIOS update starts with the exact motherboard model and its official instructions. Choose an in-BIOS utility or supported Flashback, then follow board-specific file, port, power, and completion steps.

To update a motherboard BIOS from a USB drive, first identify the exact motherboard model and revision, then follow its manufacturer’s support page and manual. If the computer can enter firmware setup, use the board’s in-BIOS update utility. If it cannot boot normally, a dedicated USB BIOS Flashback feature may work—but only on supported boards, and only with the specified file name, USB port, power connections, and button procedure.

Choose the update method your motherboard supports

Updating through an in-BIOS utility and using a dedicated Flashback button are separate procedures. Check your exact board’s manual before preparing the drive; steps for another model or manufacturer may not apply.

What to check In-BIOS utility Dedicated USB Flashback
System state Enter firmware setup and run the board’s update utility. MSI’s M-FLASH is one example. Some supported boards can update without a normal system boot. ASRock describes its Flashback procedure as working without a CPU, RAM, or graphics card.
Board support Depends on the board’s firmware utility and manual. Requires a board with the specific feature, designated USB port, and button.
USB and file requirements Follow the board’s specified format and select its model-matched BIOS file. Format, file name, port, and button procedure vary by board.
Completion Keep power connected and the USB drive inserted throughout the update. Watch the board’s own status indicator and follow its manual’s completion instructions.

Use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact product, not a similar model. Check release notes for prerequisites and confirm any board revision that the manufacturer distinguishes. ASUS, MSI, and ASRock all publish model-specific BIOS instructions: ASUS BIOS update guidance, MSI BIOS update guidance, and ASRock BIOS Flashback guidance.

Prepare the USB drive and BIOS file

  1. Back up the USB drive. Formatting erases its contents, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
  2. Format it as the board requires. The cited ASUS and MSI procedures use FAT32; ASUS’s FlashBack FAQ also accepts FAT16/32. Check your manual rather than assuming every board accepts the same format.
  3. Download the BIOS for the exact board. Use the manufacturer’s support page for your model and revision. Do not use firmware just because it appears to be for a related board.
  4. Extract and place the file as instructed. Some procedures require an extracted file, a particular name, or placement in the USB drive’s root directory. Follow the specific manual; do not apply another model’s file-naming example.

ASUS’s USB BIOS FlashBack FAQ and MSI’s M-FLASH instructions describe their own drive and firmware requirements. A USB drive is only the transfer medium; there is no universal capacity or filename established for all motherboards.

Use the in-BIOS update utility when the system can enter firmware setup

If the computer can reach its firmware environment, use the update utility specified in the board manual. For MSI boards that support it, M-FLASH is one such route.

  1. Prepare the USB drive and model-matched BIOS file using the board’s instructions.
  2. Restart and enter firmware setup using the key or method specified by the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  3. Open the board’s named update utility—in MSI’s case, M-FLASH—and select the correct BIOS file as directed on screen.
  4. Start the update only when you are ready to leave the computer undisturbed. MSI’s instructions explicitly warn: “Do not turn off the computer, disconnect the power, or remove the USB drive during the update process.”

MSI’s M-FLASH guidance, dated October 7, 2024, is available at MSI’s official support page. Other boards may use different utility names and steps.

Use USB Flashback only if your board supports it

A dedicated Flashback feature can be useful when the system cannot boot normally or the installed firmware does not support the CPU. It is not a general USB update method: the board must explicitly support it, and its exact file, port, power, button, and indicator requirements matter. ASRock describes Flashback as updating the BIOS with a USB drive and power supply, but that applies to boards with the feature and its documented procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm Flashback support on the exact motherboard’s product page and manual.
  2. Prepare the firmware file and USB drive exactly as that model specifies, including any required rename.
  3. Connect the required power cables and insert the drive into the designated Flashback port, not an arbitrary USB port.
  4. Press the Flashback button for the specified duration, if required, and monitor the board’s indicator.
  5. Wait for the board’s documented completion signal before removing the USB drive or disconnecting power.

For example, ASRock says its Flashback LED stops blinking when the process is complete. That signal should not be assumed to describe another manufacturer’s boards. Consult the ASRock Flashback instructions, MSI Flash BIOS Button instructions, or the manual for your own model.

What to do if the update does not start or finish

Do not guess at a recovery sequence or repeatedly try a procedure from another board. Recheck the steps against the exact model’s official instructions.

  • Verify that the BIOS file matches the motherboard model and, where applicable, revision.
  • Confirm the drive format, file extraction, required filename, and root-directory placement.
  • For Flashback, check that the board supports it, the USB drive is in the designated port, and the required power and button sequence were followed.
  • Use only the status-indicator meaning documented for that board. ASRock’s stopped-blinking signal, for example, is specific to its instructions.

ASUS recommends checking the FlashBack procedure and contacting its local service center if the problem persists. Its steps are in the ASUS FlashBack FAQ. The available manufacturer procedures do not establish one universal recovery process, success rate, or update duration.
