First identify whether the issue is a changed setup setting, a failed firmware update, or a hardware or boot-device fault. BIOS and UEFI setup resets restore configuration; firmware recovery is a separate, model-specific process intended to repair corrupted firmware.
Identify what changed and what the computer does
Before changing settings or attempting recovery, write down the computer’s exact manufacturer and model, the full error text, any beep or LED pattern, and whether the manufacturer logo appears. Note whether the problem began immediately after a BIOS/UEFI update, a setup change, or a hardware event. “No POST” and a black screen describe symptoms, not their cause. Dell distinguishes suspected BIOS corruption from hardware error messages and physical damage in its BIOS recovery guidance.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
- You can enter BIOS/UEFI setup: If the issue followed a configuration change, consider restoring setup defaults. If it followed a firmware update, consult the exact model’s recovery instructions rather than treating a settings reset as firmware repair.
- You cannot reach setup or see the logo: Check the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance for supported recovery and diagnostic options. A failed POST alone does not establish firmware corruption.
- You see a hardware error message, or the computer suffered physical or liquid damage: Use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and service route. Dell specifically advises against BIOS recovery for physical damage or liquid spills.
When to restore BIOS/UEFI setup defaults
If the computer still enters setup and the issue began after changing a setting, restoring defaults may undo a problematic configuration. Dell explains how to restore factory defaults on its computers in its setup-reset instructions. Menu names and steps vary by model, so use the instructions for your computer rather than assuming a universal key or menu path.
Defaults can change the boot order, Secure Boot, virtualization, TPM, or custom performance settings. Record settings you intentionally changed and make sure you understand which ones may need to be restored afterward. Dell says resetting BIOS settings does not delete files; that statement concerns its settings-reset procedure, not every possible firmware operation.

When BIOS firmware recovery may be appropriate
Firmware recovery is intended for suspected corrupted BIOS/UEFI firmware, such as after a failed update, and is different from loading setup defaults. Availability and prerequisites depend on the computer model. Use the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact machine, including the required firmware file, recovery media, and startup procedure.
Dell: check whether the model supports the documented method
Dell documents recovery from a file on the hard drive and a USB-based recovery method for supported computers. The hard-drive option depends on feature support and the computer’s configuration; Dell describes USB as an alternative when hard-drive recovery is unavailable or unsuccessful. Follow Dell’s recovery prerequisites and steps for the exact model. A USB flash drive is only recovery media: it does not replace the correct BIOS file or the model-specific procedure.

ASUS: use the BIOS file for the exact model
ASUS describes recovery paths for selected cases where a device fails to boot or show a display after startup, including a BIOS recovery mode and an ASUS firmware update screen. Its guidance calls for the corresponding BIOS file for the specific model and also discusses EC or RTC reset for some cases. Consult the ASUS troubleshooting instructions for the affected product; do not substitute another model’s firmware or assume every ASUS system uses the same sequence.

Lenovo: treat jumper-based recovery as a service procedure
Lenovo’s documented recovery process for certain systems involves the model’s Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper and BIOS update media. This is not a general instruction for every Lenovo computer, nor a casual laptop repair. What to do when recovery is unavailable or fails
Do not keep repeating generic key combinations or trying firmware files that are not meant for the computer. If the manufacturer does not document a supported recovery path, a supported attempt does not work, diagnostics report hardware trouble, or the computer is physically damaged, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Dell says its recovery procedure affects BIOS/UEFI firmware and that “Your data and Windows installation remain unchanged”; treat that as Dell’s description of its procedure, not a guarantee for every manufacturer or every reset and recovery scenario.
