The right material depends on what you want to print: a plastic ID card, a photo on paper, or a paper copy of an existing card. For a plastic card, use inkjet-coated PVC only when your exact printer model supports it. For a paper photo ID, choose media the printer supports at the required size and thickness. If you only need a copy of a card, an all-in-one’s ID-copy feature may use ordinary Letter or A4 paper.
Choose the output before buying paper
“ID card paper” can mean very different materials and jobs. Identify the intended result first, then check the printer manual for compatible media. A stock that works for a photo printed on a sheet is not automatically suitable for feeding a plastic card.

- Plastic card: Requires PVC cards with an inkjet-receptive coating and explicit support from the printer model. Epson’s L8050 and L18050 instructions specify white PVC cards measuring 54 × 86 mm and 0.76 mm thick; those dimensions are model-specific, not universal printer guidance. Epson’s card-printing precautions.
- Photo on paper: Use photo or inkjet paper in a size and thickness supported by your printer. Check the device’s media settings and manual before selecting stock. Brother’s recommended-paper guidance.
- Copy of an existing card: Some all-in-one printers have an ID Card Copy function that places both sides of a card on plain paper. This creates a paper copy, not a plastic card. Epson’s ID-card copying instructions.
What to use for each printing job
Printing directly onto a plastic card
Do not put generic PVC stock into an inkjet printer based on its size alone. The card needs an inkjet-printable coating, and the printer must support that card type and feed path. Confirm the exact dimensions and thickness in the manual for your printer. Epson specifies 54 × 86 mm, 0.76 mm white PVC cards for the L8050 and L18050 instructions; other models may have different requirements or may not support PVC cards at all. See Epson’s model-specific guidance.

Printing a photo ID on a sheet
Select photo or inkjet media that matches the printer’s supported size, type, and thickness. Use the corresponding media-type setting so the printer handles the sheet as intended. Brother advises testing paper before buying a large quantity and warns that prints may smudge if touched before drying. Its supported-media information varies by model, so consult the manual for the specific printer rather than treating one model’s limits as general advice. Brother: recommended paper.

Copying a card onto plain paper
If the goal is a paper reproduction of an existing card, check the all-in-one’s menus or manual for an “ID Card Copy” feature. Epson documents a workflow for specified older all-in-one models that uses plain Letter or A4 paper. This feature is a copying option, not a way to print onto plastic card stock. Epson: Copying ID Cards.
Check compatibility and handling before ordering
- Find the complete model name of your printer and open its manual or manufacturer support page.
- Confirm the supported media type, dimensions, thickness, and feed path for the job you want to do.
- For plastic, buy only inkjet-coated PVC that meets the printer’s stated requirements; do not assume ordinary PVC is printable or feedable.
- For paper photos, choose a supported photo or inkjet stock and select the matching media type in the print settings.
- Try a small quantity first. A test can reveal feed problems, smudging, or unsatisfactory image results before you buy more.
- After printing photos, remove sheets promptly and avoid touching the printed surface until it has dried, following the printer maker’s handling advice.
Is any paper universally best for picture ID cards?
No universal paper or card stock is established as best for every printer and output. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide comparative brand testing or durability measurements. The practical choice is the stock that matches the desired result and is explicitly supported by the exact printer model.
