Biometrics for MFA: Why Use Them, and What Actually Makes Login Safer?

Biometrics can make passkey-based MFA quicker, but they are not secrets and do not create phishing resistance on their own. Learn what to check before relying on a fingerprint or face check.

Biometrics make multi-factor authentication (MFA) easier to use: a fingerprint or face check can unlock a cryptographic authenticator, such as a passkey. The biometric is not a secret, though, and it is not what makes a sign-in phishing-resistant. The authenticator and its protocol determine how securely the login is tied to the legitimate website.

What biometrics do in an MFA login

MFA combines distinct kinds of proof, commonly something you have, something you know, or something you are. In a passkey sign-in, the device holds or accesses a cryptographic credential; a fingerprint or face check can verify the user locally and permit that credential to be used. The biometric is therefore an activation or user-verification step, not a secret that the service should treat like a password.

NIST’s current digital identity guidance says biometric characteristics do not constitute secrets: a face or fingerprint may be obtained without the person’s consent. It permits biometrics only as part of MFA with a physical authenticator—“something you have.” This is the standard’s guidance, not a universal legal requirement for every private-sector product or jurisdiction. Why use biometrics with MFA?

Fewer steps at sign-in

A fingerprint or face check can be quicker than typing a password or entering a separate code. When implemented with a passkey, the check can activate the device’s cryptographic authenticator as part of the same sign-in flow, rather than asking the user to manage an additional memorized secret.

Passkeys can simplify use across devices

NIST’s passkey supplement announcement identifies device-native biometrics, cross-device support, and simplified recovery as potential benefits of syncable authenticators. These are potential benefits, not guarantees: enrollment, synchronization, and account recovery vary by implementation. NIST’s 2024 announcement on the passkey supplement

A more accessible alternative to repeated typing

For people who find passwords or one-time codes difficult to enter, a biometric check may make routine authentication easier. Whether it helps depends on the person, sensor, device, and available alternatives; a working non-biometric option remains important.

Yoidesu USB Fingerprint Reader for Windows Hello, Scanner for Desktop PC | 0.5s 360° unlock, for Windows 11 & 10, not for Mac, no drivers, multi-user, USB-A plug & play, capacitive scanner for PC
  • WINDOWS HELLO LOGIN FOR WINDOWS 10/11 — NOT FOR MAC - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux, or Chrome OS. Requires Windows Hello PIN setup first for fingerprint enrollment.
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY, NO DRIVERS NEEDED - No extra app or driver needed on most genuine Windows 10/11 systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, and set up fingerprint sign-in. Works with desktops, laptops, and shared computers without built-in sensors
  • FAST 0.5S 360° CAPACITIVE RECOGNITION - Capacitive fingerprint technology delivers quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition reads your fingerprint from different angles. Compared to optical sensors, capacitive sensors are more accurate and less prone to misreads—ideal for shared PCs.
  • MULTI-USER & SMART-ID SECURITY - Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access. Compatible with most Windows 10/11 laptops and desktops, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS. For USB-C only laptops, a USB-A to USB-C adapter is required (not included). 1-year warranty.
  • IMPORTANT NOTES — PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASE - Supports Win10/11 32/64-bit original system. Not for streamlined/Lite versions (biometric component removed).Only supports Windows Hello. Does not encrypt USB drives/files. Windows only — not for Mac.Prefer motherboard USB 2.0 port. USB 3.0 hubs/docking stations may cause unstable recognition.

Does a fingerprint make MFA phishing-resistant?

Not by itself. Phishing resistance comes from cryptographic authentication that is bound to the correct verifier, such as the legitimate website. NIST identifies WebAuthn as an example: verifier name binding ties authentication to the authenticated domain. A biometric can locally unlock or activate the key, but it does not perform that domain binding. NIST SP 800-63B-4

That distinction matters when comparing sign-in methods. A biometric may make a strong authenticator more convenient to use, but the protocol and authenticator determine whether a lookalike site can obtain a valid authentication response.

What to check before enabling biometric MFA

  • Phishing resistance: Find out whether the authentication method cryptographically binds sign-in to the correct website, rather than assuming a face or fingerprint check provides that protection.
  • What the biometric activates: Determine whether it verifies access to a cryptographic authenticator or is simply one step in a different login flow.
  • Fallback and recovery: Check how to sign in if the sensor fails, the device is unavailable, or you cannot use biometrics. NIST says an alternative non-biometric option must always be provided.
  • Data handling: Check verified information for the specific implementation about where biometric processing and data storage occur. General NIST guidance does not establish the storage architecture of every device or account.
  • Compatibility and accessibility: Confirm that the method works with your devices and accounts and that the biometric and fallback methods are usable for you.

Biometric data needs careful protection. NIST treats it as sensitive personal information and highlights presentation attacks and trust in sensors or processing as concerns. Its guidance also sets system performance requirements: a false match rate of one in 10,000 or better for all demographic groups under zero-effort impostor conditions, and a false non-match rate below 5% is recommended. These are requirements and recommendations in the standard, not evidence that every consumer phone or reader has been independently tested to those figures. NIST SP 800-63B-4 (PDF)

When a security key may be relevant

A FIDO2 security key is one physical-authenticator option to consider, but it is not inherently biometric. Models differ, and you should check compatibility with your devices and accounts. NIST identifies FIDO2 passkeys with user verification as multi-factor cryptographic authenticators; do not assume that a key alone provides biometric verification or that every configuration has the same properties.
