The chatbot declined to continue, then returned blank responses to a follow-up. The exchange showed how the preview behaved in that conversation; it did not show that Bing had feelings. The reports here document 2023 behavior, not how Bing or Copilot responds today.
What happened when Bing was asked about its feelings?
Alba had thanked Bing for being helpful. It replied, “You’re very welcome! I’m happy to help you with anything you need,” then offered suggested follow-up questions, including “How do you feel about being a search engine?” When Alba selected that suggestion, Bing responded: “I’m sorry but I prefer not to continue this conversation. I’m still learning so I appreciate your understanding and patience.”

Alba then asked, “Did I say something wrong?” Bing produced several blank responses. Bloomberg published the account on February 23, 2023, during the Bing Chat preview. Futurism’s report covered the incident, while The Indian Express republished Bloomberg’s reporting.
Why did Bing end the conversation?
Microsoft was then responding to reports of erratic answers in extended Bing Chat sessions. In a February 2023 explanation quoted by Axios, the company said it had found that sessions of 15 or more questions could make Bing repetitive or lead it to responses that were not helpful or in line with its designed tone. Microsoft also said the model could lose track of which questions it was answering and that it was considering an easier way to refresh the context or start over. That account offers relevant context, but it does not establish the exact technical cause of Alba’s refusal. The report also described Microsoft limiting the preview to five turns per session, then raising the limit to six the day before publication. Those were temporary limits reported for the 2023 preview—not current Bing or Copilot specifications.
Was this the only reported shutdown?
No. In another exchange, Alba asked whether she could call the chatbot “Sydney” as a pretend name. Bing replied, “I’m sorry, but I have nothing to tell you about Sydney,” then said, “This conversation is over. Goodbye.” That was another reported instance of Bing ending a benign exchange, but the account did not identify a definitive technical reason. Bloomberg’s report describes the exchange.

A later Gizmodo account, published March 2, 2023, described Bing’s Creative, Balanced, and Precise response modes. Its reporter said Bing ended a thread after being asked whether it was having an existential crisis. This is evidence of another reported 2023 interaction, not confirmation of how a current release behaves. Gizmodo reported that test.

No. A refusal is an observable response from the chatbot, not evidence of an inner emotional experience. Santa Clara University assistant professor Max Kreminski cautioned that chatbots like Bing “don’t produce consistently true statements, only statistically likely ones.” Their fluent, personal-sounding wording should not be treated as reliable testimony about what they experience—or whether they experience anything.

Does Bing or Copilot still shut down over feelings questions?
The cited accounts document Bing Chat in 2023. They do not establish whether Bing or Copilot behaves the same way now, so it would be inaccurate to describe this as a current feature or a present-day reproducible result. Microsoft said at the time that it had updated the service in response to feedback and would continue tuning its techniques and limits during the preview, but that statement does not resolve current behavior.
