For the October 4, 2026 snapshot, Buffalo’s official depth chart lists DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman in its three receiver rows; the independent Ourlads chart adds alignment labels and lists Moore ahead of Skyler Bell at RWR, Shakir ahead of Greg Dortch at SWR, and Coleman ahead of Joshua Palmer at LWR. That order is a starting point—not a guarantee that the next name inherits the absent player’s targets or exact job. To evaluate a replacement, check the missing receiver’s role, the candidate’s fit, and current game usage before making a week-specific call.
What the Bills’ current receiver chart says
The Bills’ official depth chart checked October 4, 2026 lists three generic WR rows: DJ Moore with Skyler Bell, Khalil Shakir with Greg Dortch, and Keon Coleman with Joshua Palmer. Ourlads’ independent chart, updated October 3, assigns alignment labels to the same pairs. Its listed order is:

The official Bills page is the team’s listing, but its receiver rows do not identify alignment in the retrieved page text. Ourlads provides that extra alignment detail as an independent chart, not an official team designation. Treat both as dated snapshots of listed order rather than confirmation of a particular game’s personnel plan. Check the official Bills depth chart for the latest listing.
How to assess a replacement when a starter is out
Identify the missing receiver’s actual assignment
Start with where and how the absent player was used: outside or in the slot, on which side or in which formations, and in what personnel group. A chart position can suggest who is next in the rotation, but it does not establish that player’s route mix or workload. Compare the official chart with an alignment-specific chart where available, then verify the team’s current rotation.

Match the candidate’s role and skills
Bills training-camp reporting described Coleman as a physical contested-catch receiver, Palmer as an intermediate-to-deep threat whose game emphasizes speed and route precision, and Bell as a separator who can threaten all three levels. Those are preseason role descriptions, not evidence of current game form. A closer role match may make a candidate a more natural substitute; a different skill set could instead lead the offense to distribute assignments differently. The Bills’ July 28, 2026 camp report also said Moore was acquired to be the leading outside playmaker and described Shakir as next in the pecking order after leading the team in receptions and receiving yards the prior season. That report predates the October chart and should not override it.
Look for evidence of readiness
Release technique, route precision, playbook command, and use in the relevant personnel group help indicate whether a receiver can handle the assignment. In the same camp coverage, the Bills said Coleman had improved his releases and Bell had worked to master the playbook. These observations offer context about camp preparation, not proof that either is ready for a particular game or role; look for current practice and game evidence.

The Bills report said Bell’s final college season produced 101 receptions, almost 1,300 receiving yards, and 13 receiving touchdowns. Those figures are attributed to the team’s report; “almost” is the report’s qualification for his yardage.

For a specific game, compare offensive snaps, routes run, target share or targets per route, and whether the receiver is on the field in the relevant down-and-distance situations. Check reliable game logs and snap or route data for the weeks that best match the current situation. The available information here does not establish current quantitative snap, route, or target comparisons, so it cannot support a measured usage trend or a target projection.

Account for a shared workload
An absence may shift work among multiple receivers and tight ends or prompt different formations. Check the latest injury and inactive information and reported rotation before deciding that one player will inherit the role. The depth and camp descriptions alone do not identify a replacement for a future game.
Check roster status separately from chart order
Buffalo announced an initial 53-player roster on August 30, 2026, with Coleman, Moore, Palmer, Shakir and Bell among the listed receivers. The team’s roster page checked October 4 also showed Tyrell Shavers on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform and additional receivers on the practice squad. The announcement is an initial active-roster snapshot; a current roster listing includes reserve and practice-squad status, so it is not interchangeable with that announcement or with the depth chart. Check the current Bills roster and later transactions when determining who is available.

What the chart cannot tell you
A listed backup is a useful first candidate, not an automatic one-for-one replacement. The charts show listed order, while the team’s camp reporting supplies broad role and readiness context. Neither establishes the unavailable starter’s exact assignment in a given game, the replacement’s current snap share, nor how targets will be divided. For a weekly judgment, use the latest chart and availability report, then confirm role and opportunity with current practice, snap, route, and target evidence.
