Big Data Architecture: What It Does and Why It Matters

Big data architecture connects data sources, ingestion, storage, processing, and analytics. Its design depends on an organization’s data and workloads, not a universal size threshold.

Big data architecture is the design of the connected systems that capture, store, process, and analyze data that is too large, complex, or fast-moving for an organization’s conventional systems. “Big” has no universal byte threshold: it depends on the tools and capabilities available to that organization. The architecture describes how data moves through the system and how the resulting information becomes useful—not a fixed list of products every organization must deploy.

What is big data architecture?

Microsoft Learn defines the field as managing the ingestion, processing, and analysis of data too large or complex for traditional database systems. In practice, the term also covers data that arrives too quickly or in forms that conventional systems cannot readily handle. The threshold varies by organization; a fixed size such as a specific number of terabytes is not a reliable definition.

Architecture is the map of responsibilities and data flows: where data originates, how it enters the system, where it is stored and transformed, and how analysts or applications use the results. It is a logical design, not necessarily a single machine, product, or physical location.

What are the components of a big data architecture?

A typical architecture can be understood by following data from its source to its users. Microsoft’s overview notes that a particular solution may not need every component shown in a reference design.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Data sources: Applications, operational data stores, files such as logs, devices, and other systems supply raw or prepared data.
  2. Ingestion: Data enters through batch loading, continuous message feeds, or both. A message buffer can absorb bursts, support processing at scale, and help deliver messages reliably.
  3. Storage: The system retains source data or prepared data for later processing and analysis. The arrangement depends on the workload and solution.
  4. Processing: Jobs or stream processors filter, aggregate, enrich, or otherwise prepare data. Some processing happens after data has accumulated; other processing happens as events arrive.
  5. Analytical destinations and consumers: An analytical store, reporting tools, applications, and machine-learning workloads use processed data to answer questions or support decisions.

These are functional responsibilities, not a required shopping list. Some designs combine functions, omit unnecessary pieces, or serve consumers directly from a suitable storage or processing layer.

What is the difference between batch and stream processing?

Processing path What it handles Typical use
Batch Data collected and stored before a job processes it Periodic workloads over data at rest, such as preparing accumulated records for analysis
Stream Incoming events or messages as they arrive Real-time or low-latency analysis, such as filtering or aggregating a continuing event feed

Many architectures combine the paths: batch jobs handle accumulated data while stream processors work on new events. Interactive exploration and predictive analytics or machine learning can also be part of the workload. The right mix depends on how quickly results are needed and what kinds of questions the system must answer.

What is a big data reference architecture?

A reference architecture is a conceptual model for describing system roles, activities, and functional components. NIST’s Big Data Interoperability Framework: Volume 6, Big Data Reference Architecture (Version 2), published June 26, 2018, presents those views as a way to reason about responsibilities and interactions rather than prescribe one deployment. This helps distinguish architecture—the organization of roles and functions—from a diagram of particular software products.

NIST’s model also emphasizes that the design includes system orchestration, business ownership, system architecture, and data-science concerns. Governance and security and privacy are cross-cutting requirements: they must be considered across the flows and components, rather than treated only as a final analytics step.

How do Lambda, Kappa, and lakehouse patterns fit?

Lambda, Kappa, and lakehouse are patterns discussed in Microsoft’s architecture overview, not mandatory building blocks or a universal ranking. They represent different ways to organize data processing and storage. Choose among patterns by evaluating the actual workload and operational requirements, not by assuming one is best for every organization.

  • Workload: Is the need primarily batch, streaming, interactive analysis, or a combination?
  • Freshness: How quickly must results reflect newly arriving data?
  • Data characteristics: What volume, variety, and complexity must the system handle?
  • Flow and serving: Where should data be ingested, stored, transformed, and made available to users or applications?
  • Analytics: How will reporting, exploration, and machine learning consume data from the system?
  • Controls: How will governance, security, and privacy requirements be applied and monitored across the design?

The answer may be a combination of approaches or a simpler design that does not use a named pattern. The architecture should fit the organization’s data and goals.
